  • This paper investigates the field weakening operation of a five-phase permanent magnet motor. The proposed motor has concentrated windings such that the produced back-EMF is almost trapezoidal and is supplied with the combined sinusoidal plus third harmonic of currents to produce trapezoidal current. Therefore this motor, while generating the same average torque as an equivalent permanent magnet brushless dc motor, overcomes its disadvantages. It is shown that torque producing and flux producing components of current for this motor can be decoupled by using multiple reference frame transformation. Therefore, Vector control is easily applicable to the motor. This motor has benefits such as high torque density of a BLDC motor below the rated speed and controllability of PMSM above the rated speed and during the field weakening region and simulation and experimental results are provided to prove the validity of the superior performance of this drive.

  • Active AC/DC converters with PWM operation are utilized to regulate rectified DC bus voltage of a permanent magnet synchronous generator in the maritime DC power system. A DC bus voltage regulation strategy that exploits the six-step operation is proposed in this study. Compared with that of the PWM operation, switching loss of the converter can be significantly reduced under the six-step operation. Moreover, conduction loss can also be reduced due to the high modulation index and reduced flux-weakening current of the six-step operation. A controller is used for the proposed DC bus voltage regulation strategy to verify its validity with the simulation and experimental setup. The simulation and the experimental test results showed that the converter loss reduces to a maximum of 70% and 19%, respectively.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • This paper studies the voltage angle control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). For voltage angle control, the optimum voltage angle trajectory according to the operating speed is researched while the voltage and current limit conditions are considered. Through research, two different optimum voltage angle trajectories that depend on the design of IPMSMs were found. The IPMSM drive based on a voltage angle control that follows such trajectory is proposed. Unlike the conventional voltage angle control method, which is applied only in the flux-weakening region, the proposed voltage angle control can be implemented in all operation ranges from low to high speed. The proposed method is verified by experiments using a DSC controller for 800 W IPMSM.

  • This paper presents the torque control algorithm of a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) for an electric scooter. The volume of the in-wheel type motor is restricted due to the complicated mechanical structure in wheel of an electric scooter, so the hall sensors instead of resolver and encoder for the rotor position sensors are installed. In this paper, the rotor speed and position are estimated from the speed estimator for vector control of a PMSM with hall sensors. The motor starts to rotate at standstill in BLDC mode with 120 degree conduction. After start up, the operating mode is changed to the vector control with maximum torque per ampere(MTPA) operation at low speeds and flux weakening control at high speeds. The performance of the proposed control algorithm is verified through the experiment in the electric scooter.

  • Interior permanent magnet synchronous motors can be applied to applications requiring wide-speed operation. The current control scheme of an interior permanent magnet synchronous (IPM) motor via feedback linearizing technique is proposed. As the available voltage controlling the armature current is small in transient operations and/or flux-weakening region, the current control performance can be deteriorated. The high performance overmodulation strategy is also proposed to improve the current responses. The control performances are confirmed by simulations.

  • This paper presents the sensorless control technique with cost competitive phase currents detection for PMSM drives. The phase currents are detected by two methods : one is from the do link current, another is from the currents of the lower legs of the inverter switches. The sensorless control with the phase currents dectection is implemented with DSP. It is verified through the experiment that the estimated rotor position tracks the real rotor position at the low speeds and high speeds operation with flux weakening.

  • This paper shows the characteristics of performance for interior permanent magnet machine (IPM) considering driving conditions such as maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) and flux-weakening control especially in terms of harmonic loss. In particular, based on finite element analysis (FEA), permanent magnet (PM) eddycurrent loss and the harmonic iron loss have been computed where the models have been intentionally designed to identify the effects of pole-slot combinations on the loss while maintaining the required power for electric vehicle. From the analysis results, it was shown that the rotor iron loss and PM eddy-current loss of machine employing fractional slot winding are extremely large at load condition. Furthermore, it was revealed that the harmonic iron loss at high-speed operation is mainly distributed over stator teeth and rotor surface, which may aggravate cooling system of the rotor structure in the vehicle.

  • This paper describes current controlled PWM technique of IPM synchronous motors for a wide variety of speed control applications. The IPM synchronous motors have a saliency, in which the q-axis inductance is larger than the d-axis inductance. As a consequence, there exists a reluctance torque component Thus when this component is added to the torque component produced by the stator currents and the air-gap flux, IPM motor drives are readily applicable where full torque Is required up to full or base speed. They are however limited in their ability to operate in the power limited regime where the available torque is reduced as the speed is increased above its base value. This paper reviews the operation of the IPMSM drives when they are constrained to be within the permissible envelope of maximum inverter voltage and current to produce the rated power and to provide this with the highest attainable rotor speed. The wide variety of speed control strategy is analyzed and the performance is investigated by the computer simulation using actual parameters of a drive system. Simulation results are given and discussed.
