  • A porphyrin compound containing a crown ether moiety (Por-Crown) and its zinc complex (ZnPor-Crown) have been prepared and the effect of the addition of alkali metal on their fluorescence has been investigated. As alkali metal cations were added, the absorption and fluorescence maxima did not change. However, the absorbance and intensity of fluorescence increased dramatically. Among the alkali metal cations tested, addition of K$^{+}$ and Cs$^{+}$ showed strongest enhancement of absorbance and fluorescence intensity of Por-Crown and ZnPor-Crown.own.

  • Novel new red-light emitting perylene fluoroionophore N,N'-dipropyl-1,7-bis(calix[4]azacrown-5-crown-5)- 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxy diimide (3) was prepared by reacting N,N'-dipropyl-1,7-dibromo-3,4,9,10- perylene tetracarboxy diimide (1) with calix[4]azacrown-5-crown-5. Also the alternating copolymer (4) with similar repeating unit was prepared reacting by calix[4]bisazacrown-5 with 1. Metal ion binding by 3 and 4 leads to a blue-shift of absorption band and emission spectra. When ionophoric characteristics were investigated by binding alkali, alkali earth metal and various metal ions, polymeric ionophores displayed large fluorescence decreasing effects with K+, Ag+ and Ba2+, which was rationalized by photo-induced charge transfer (PCT).

  • A new pyrene appended diaza-18-crown-6 ether derivative 1 has been prepared and its fluoroionophoric properties toward transition metal ions were investigated. Compound 1 exhibited a high Hg2+-selectivity over other transition metal ions as well as alkali and alkaline earth metal ions in aqueous acetonitrile solution. The ratiometric analysis of the monomer and excimer emissions of pyrene successfully signals the presence of Hg2+ ions. The detection limit for Hg2+ ions was found to be 3.1 ´ 10-6 M in 50% aqueous acetonitrile solution at pH 8.1. Competition experiments also suggest that the compound could be utilized as a selective and sensitive fluorescent chemosensor for the analysis of micromolar Hg2+ ions in physiological and environmental samples.

  • A synthesis and cation-induced fluorescent behavior of the carbazole-attached $NO_2S_2$-macrocycle (L) is described and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis. The photoluminescence spectrum of L in 80% $CH_3CN/CH_2Cl_2$ displays a peak maximum at 431 nm (blue emission). In the metal-induced fluorometric experiment, L showed a drastic chelation-enhanced fluorescence quenching (CHEQ) effect only with $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. In ESI-mass study, a 1:1 stoichiometry for complexation of L with $Hg^{2+}$ was confirmed, suggesting the unique sensing behavior of the proposed ligand L due to the selective complexation affinity for $Hg^{2+}$. The observed results indicate that L is a promising turn-off type fluoroionophore for $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ detections. Additionally, the $Ag^+$ complex of the precursor macrocycle was prepared and its solid structure was crystallographically characterized.
