The water can be contaminated by natural sources or by industrial effluents. One such contaminant is fluoride. Fluoride contamination in the water environment due to natural and artificial activities has been recognized as one of the major problems worldwide. Among the commonly used treatment technologies applied for fluoride removal, the adsorption technique has been explored widely and offers a highly efficient simple and low-cost process for fluoride removal from water. This review paper the recent developments in fluoride removal from surface water by adsorption methods. Studies on fluoride removal from aqueous solutions using various carbon materials are reviewed. Various adsorbents with high fluoride removal capacity have been developed, however, there is still an urgent need to transfer the removal process to an industrial scale. Regeneration studies need to be performed to more extent to recover the adsorbent in field conditions, enhancing the economic feasibility of the process. Based on the review, technical strategies of the adsorption method including the Nano-surface effect, structural memory effect, anti-competitive adsorption and ionic sieve effect can be proposed. The design of adsorbents through these strategies can greatly improve the removal efficiency of fluoride in water and guide the development of new efficient methods for fluoride removal in the future. This paper describes brief discussions on various low-cost adsorbents used for the effective removal of fluoride from water.
Fluorine is unique chemical element which occurs naturally, but is not an essential nutrient for plants. Fluoride toxicity can arise due to excessive fluoride intake from a variety of natural or manmade sources. Fluoride is phytotoxic to most plants. Plants which are sensitive for fluorine exposure even low concentrations of fluorine can cause leave damage and a decline in growth. All vegetation contains some fluoride absorbed from soil and water. The highest levels of F in field-grown vegetables are found up to $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ fresh weight although fluoride is relatively immobile and is not easily leached in soil because most of the fluoride was not readily soluble or exchangeable. Also, high concentrations of fluoride primarily associated with the soil colloid or clay fraction can increase fluoride levels in soil solution, increasing uptake via the plant root. In soils more than 90 percent of the natural fluoride ranging from 20 to $1,000{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ is insoluble, or tightly bound to soil particles. The excess accumulation of fluorides in vegetation leads to visible leaf injury, damage to fruits, changes in the yield. The amount of fluoride taken up by plants depending on the type of plant, the nature of the soil, and the amount and form of fluoride in the soil should be controlled. Conclusively, fluoride is possible and long-term pollution effects on plant growth through accumulation of the fluoride retained in the soil.
This study aimed to determine the fluoride intakes in 120 preschool children aged 3 to 6 residing in Jumunjin (community water fluoridation area) and Gangneung (non-fluoridation area). The parents were asked to collect 24-hour urine samples and to duplicate the samples of all the diets that their children ingested in the day of urine collection. The acid-diffusible fluoride in the food and non-carbonate beverages were isolated by the acid-diffusion technique and then measured with a fluoride electrode. The fluoride in carbonate beverages, drinking waters and urine samples were measured directly with a fluoride electrode. The geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) of daily fluoride intakes from all kinds of diet was 5.99 (2.27) $\mu$g/kg/day in the children in Gangneung and that of the children in Jumunjin was 18.36 (2.69). The amount of fluoride intake by food and drinking water in fluoridation area were significantly larger than that in non-fluoridation area but the statistical difference of fluoride intake by beverages between two areas was not observed. The GMs (GSDs) of daily fluoride excretion by urine of children in non-fluoridation area and in fluoridation area were 8.39 (1.73) and 18.62 (1.77) $\mu$g/kg/day, respectively. The correlation between fluoride intake from diet excluding beverage and urinary excretion was statistically significant. It is concluded that the amount of fluoride intake of children living in fluoridation area did not exceed the upper intake level to avoid the risk of dental fluorosis (2.2 mg/day in 4- to 8-year-olds) and urinary excretion of fluoride was good indicator of fluoride intake from diets.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the experimental and commercial fluoride varnishes on the Vickers hardness of bovine teeth. The experimental fluoride varnishes with 5 wt.% NaF were fabricated using Bis-GMA or rosin as the resin base. The components were mixed with over-head stirrer under warming up in a double boiler for 30 minutes. Four commercial fluoride varnishes (V-varnish, Flor-opal, Cavity shield, Fluor protector) were compared with the experimental fluoride varnishes. Vickers hardness was measured on the labial surface of bovine anterior teeth after applying fluoride varnish on 5th and 30th day. The surface of bovine teeth was observed with a scanning electron microscope before and after applying fluoride varnish and the change of the components on the bovine teeth surface was measured with EDX. In terms of hardness, the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish showed significantly higher hardness on the 5th and 30th day than the control (bovine teeth without fluoride treatment)(p<0.05). EDX results showed that the fluoride content on the surface of bovine teeth treated with the experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish was highest on the 1st and 10th day. The higher hardness and fluoride content of experimental rosin-based fluoride varnish can be considered to be used as an effective fluoride varnish to prevent dental caries.
Silver diamine fluoride, which can arrest dental caries, is alkaline and may cause mild soft tissue irritation. Water-based silver fluoride has a neutral pH, which is closer to the physiological range, and is biocompatible for use in the oral environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of water-based silver fluoride on remineralizing early enamel lesions by comparing it with other fluoride agents through microhardness and quantitative light-induced fluorescence measurements. An in vitro study with intact bovine incisors was performed. Artificial enamel lesions were induced and subjected to microhardness and quantitative light-induced fluorescence testing. Specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups for treatment. The specimens in group I were treated with water-based silver fluoride and potassium iodide, group II with silver diamine fluoride and potassium iodide, group III with sodium fluoride varnish, and group IV with distilled water. After 8 days of pH cycling, the specimens were subjected to microhardness and quantitative light-induced fluorescence testing. Water-based silver fluoride and silver diamine fluoride showed the greatest increases in microhardness and quantitative light-induced fluorescence, with no significant differences between the two. Sodium fluoride varnish also exhibited a significant increase in microhardness and quantitative light-induced fluorescence, but the differences were smaller than those for water-based silver fluoride and silver diamine fluoride. Water-based silver fluoride is considered useful in a clinical setting for remineralizing enamel lesions, with the advantages of no risk of tissue burn and improved taste and smell.
A study was performed to find out the fluoride contents in surface and ground waters from June, 1973 to July, 1974. Water samples were collected from 53 surface and ground water sources. The results are as follows: 1. Out of 53 samples, the ground water of Hwaengsung had the highest fluoride contents (1.6 mg/l) and 13 samples did not. have fluoride at all. 2. The waters from Yoju (ground), Chongnung (ground) Hwaengsung (ground) and Namyang (ground) had optimum fluoride level (0.6~1.7mg/l) for the prevention of dental caries. 3. The ground waters had more fluoride contents than surface waters and the waters of coastal areas had less fluoride contents than those of inland. 4. The waters of Kangwon province had the most fluoride contents (mean 0.57mg/l) and the waters of Cheju do had the least fluoride contents (mean 0.06 mg/l)
Objectives : The fluoride coating for caries prevention and strengthen enamel use NaF(sodium fluoride, Junsei Chemical Co., Ltd, Japan) 2% gel, SnF2(stannous fluoride, SIGMA-ALDRICH Gmbh, USA)8% gel and APF(acidulated phosphate fluoride, Sultan health care, USA) 1.23% gel. Methods : After put the enamel piece in these fluoride compound gel, we observed density level. And after measuring the vickers hardness, Got the following conclusions. Results : 1. After settling in the APF 1.23% during 6 days, we observed high density level of enamel surface using 250 magnification scanning microscope. The vacuum of surface packed (in) like sardines. 2. After settling in the APF 1.23% during 6 days, we observed reducing the space between the cluster of enamel surface using 50,000 magnification scanning microscope. 3. The vickers hardness change was very much on the all kinds of fluoride compound gel[2% NaF(sodium fluoride)gel, 8% SnF2(stannous fluoride) gel, 1.23% APF(acidulated phosphate fluoride)gel]. It's all because of reducing the space between the cluster of enamel surface(p<0.001). Conclusions : The vickers hardness change was very much on the all kinds of fluoride compound. It's all because of reducing the space between the cluster of enamel surface.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant was more effective in preventing caries than conventional non-fluoride-releasing sealant. Specimens 8mm in diameter were made from sound bovine enamel. Fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant(Helioseal F, Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and non-fluoride-releasing sealant(Helioseal, Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) were applied to the specimens and artificial caries was induced. Microhardness and the depth of the carious lesion was measured. The following results were obtained: 1. In group 2, sealed with fluoride-releasing sealant, there was a 58.4% decrease in microhardness. This was significantly less than the 84.4% decrease observed in group 1, sealed with non-fluoride-releasing sealant(p<0.01). 2. The average depth of the artificial carious lesion in group 2 was $30.1{\pm}9.8{\mu}m$. In group 1, sealed with non-fluoride-releasing sealant, the lesion was significantly deeper with an average depth of $58.5{\pm}4.9{\mu}m$(p<0.01). 3. Fluoride-releasing pit and fissure sealant was more anticariogenic compared to non-fluoride-releasing sealant.
Fluoride can be easily found in semiconductor and display industry. However, there is a lack of research for its effects on the related wastewater treatment. The objective of this study is to evaluate the microbial inhibitory effect by fluoride injection. The research entailed the assessment of removal efficiency of $TCOD_{Cr}$ according to the fluoride concentration and also the Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate (SOUR) was measured. The laboratory scale reactor was prepared and operated with the fluoride concentrations of 0, 10, 50, 100, and 200 mg/L based on concentrations frequently occurring in the wastewater. The results from this study showed that, as the fluoride concentration increase, the Specific Substrate Utilization Rate (SSUR) tend to decrease as expected. Also, the increase in fluoride concentrations resulted in the decrease in SOUR. It is determined that fluoride injection affects the microbial activity. Especially, The addition of above 200 mg/L fluoride into reactor caused rapidly decreased SSUR and SOUR due to the inhibitory effects of fluoride.
The adsorption features of fluoride ion on the oyster shell have been investigated for the purpose of the employment of waste oyster shell as an adsorbent for the treatment of fluoride ion-containing wastewater. The major component of oyster shell was examined to be Ca with minor components of Na, Si, Mg, Al, and Fe. As the initial concentration of fluoride ion was raised, its absorbed amount was enhanced at equilibrium, however, the adsorption ratio of fluoride ion compared with its initial concentration was shown to be decreased. Also, adsorption of fluoride ion onto the oyster shell resulted in the formation of $CaF_2$ in the morphological structure of adsorbent. Kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of fluoride ion generally followed a second order reaction with decreasing rate constant with the initial concentration of adsorbate. Freundlich model agreed well with the adsorption behavior of fluoride ion at equilibrium and the adsorption reaction of fluoride ion was examined to be endothermic. Several thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption reaction were calculated based on thermodynamic equations and the activation energy for the adsorption of fluoride ion onto oyster shell was estimated to be ca. 13.589 kJ/mole.
