  • Effects of packing materials on the pressure fluctuations in a fluidized bed have been analysed using statistical method to interpret fluidized bed behavior. The experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed of 6.7cm - ID, and the experimental variables were particle size and its distributions, fluidizing velocity, aspect ratio, and packing materials, etc. Screen packings are used as packing material, the properties of the pressure fluctuations in the fluidized bed were measured by a differential pressure transducer. The measured properties for the pressure fluctuations were the mean, the standard deviation, and the major frequency of the power spectral density functions, etc. The standard deviations of the pressure fluctuations have been slightly affected in the radial directions of fluidized bed, and almost constant in axial directions the height above 4.5cm of the distributor of fuidized bed without packing materials. The major frequency decreased with increaing packing size, whereas it showed maximum at 10% of packing materials. It has been found that the standard deviation of the pressure fluctuations can effectively explain the fluidized phenomena, and the packing materials severely affected the properties of the pressure fluctuations.

  • During the commissioning period in Tonghae thermal power plant which is the largest circulating fluidized bed boiler in the nation, a considerable amount of clinker was formed at FBAC and seal pot. Various attempts, for example, concentration analysis, surface phenomena, thermal characterization, and crystal structure of ash, bed sand, limestone, clinker, and mixture of each gradients have been studied to identify the causes of clinker formed in circulating fluidized bed boiler. As the results, the characterization of black particles in which separated from the clinker is more similar to that of bed sand, on the other hand, white particles are more similar to ash. In addition, the sintering temperature of sand is over $1,200^{\circ}C$ and this temperature was decreased as limestone is added to bed material. The cause of clinker was proved that ash was sticked to molten or sintered sand or limestone in the area of high temperature in the circulating system.

  • A liquid culture of yeast "Candida tropicalis" was used in a fluidized bioreactor to achieve high removal efficiencies of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) was used as a fluidized material to improve adsorptive capacity as well as mass transfer of gaseous toluene, the model VOC. The GAC fluidized bioreactor demonstrated toluene removal efficiencies ranging from 50 to 80%, when inlet toluene loading varied in a range between 13.1 and 37.4 g/m$^3$-hr. The maximum elimination capacity determined in the GAC fluidized bioreactor was 172 g/m$^3$-hr at a toluene loading of 291 g/m$^3$-hr. Transient loading experiments revealed that the removal efficiency was remained unchanged during an increased loading period, and toluene introduced to the bioreactor was first absorbed to GAC and then slowly desorbed and became available to the yeast culture. Hence the fluidized GAC helped to achieve an improved mass transfer between the gas and liquid phases, resulting in high toluene removal capacity. Consequently, the GAC fluidized bioreactor using C. tropicalis can be successfully applied for the removal of VOCs, and is a feasible alternative over conventional processes such as packed-bed biofilters.

  • Bubble flow characteristics in fluidized beds were analyzed by CPFD simulation. A fluidized bed, which had the size of $0.3m-ID{\times}2.4m-high$, was modeled by commercial CPFD $Barracuda^{(R)}$. Properties of bed material were $d_p=150{\mu}m$, ${\rho}_p=2,330kg/m^3$, and $U_{mf}=0.02m/s$. Gas was uniformly distributed and the range of superficial gas velocity was 0.07 to 0.16 m/s. Two other geometries were modeled. The first was a three-dimensional model, and the other was a two-dimensional model of $0.01m{\times}0.3m{\times}2.4m$. Bubble size and rising velocity were simulated by axial and radial position according to superficial gas velocity. In the case of three-dimensional model, simulated bubble rising velocity was different from correlations, because there was zigzag motion in bubble flow, and bubble detection was duplicated. To exclude zigzag motion of bubble flow, bubble rising velocity was simulated in the two-dimensional model and compared to the result from three-dimensional model.

  • In this study, the overall heat transfer coefficients are calculated on fluidized bed double pipe heat exchanger and single phase double pipe heat exchanger at the same condition. The effect of the particle size, its material, fluidizing velocity and static bed height on overall heat transfer coefficient has been investigated. The main conclusions obtained from the experiment are as follows. 1. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the fluidized bed heat exchanger is higher than that of single phase forced convective heat exchanger (maximum 2.3 times) 2. The value of the overall heat transfer coefficient increase with an increase in static bed height and decrease with an increase in particle size. 3. For the same particle size, the particle of low density can obtain higher overall heat transfer coefficient than that of high density.

  • Size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) agglomerates in the dilute phase of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d{\times}2.6m\;high$) have been determined by the laser sheet technique. Axial solid holdup distribution of the CNT particles showed S curve with dense phase and dilute phase in bubbling fluidization regime. Heywood diameter and Feret diameter of the CNT agglomerates in the dilute phase of bubbling fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The CNT particle number in the agglomerates increased with increasing of gas velocity. Aspect ratio increased and circularity, roundness and solidity decreased with increasing of gas velocity. A possible mechanism of agglomerates formation was proposed based on the obtained information.

  • Recently, the production of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash has been increased in thermal power plants. The addition of limestone for the desulfurizing effect of circulating fluidized bed boiler ash increases the content of CaO and $SO_3$ contained in ash, which is higher than the free fly ash in general fly ash. Unlike conventional fly ash, the circulating fluidized bed combustion ash has a high reactivity when it comes into contact with water due to its hydraulic properties and high free-CaO content. The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of non-sintered binder by using self-cementing properties of circulating fluidized bed combustion ash. The mechanical and hydration characteristics were investigated according to the content of CFBC ash. In addition, the effects of gymsum type and content on the compressive strength and micro-structure of non-sintered binder pastes.

  • In the reactor following the American standard test method (ASTM) D5757-95 and lab-scale fluidized bed combustor, the attrition characteristics of sand and ash of Korean anthracite were investigated. The attrition characteristics, such as particle size distribution of fly ash, attrition rate, and attrition ratio etc, were studied with variation of gas velocities. The particle attrition of ash was more active than sand which was generally used as a fluidized material and also the attrition index of ash taken by ASTM D5757-95 was 5 times higher than that of sand. The formation of fine particles continuously occurred due to particle attrition with increasing gas velocities. The following equation has been suggested for attrition rate of ash. $$\frac{dW}{dt}=-3.18{\times}10^{-7}(U-U_{mf})W$$.

  • The CFB boilers technology is facing a number of challenges. Among them, boiler tube erosion, sintering by bed inventory overheating and high self consumed service power are major ones. This study was conducted to obtain allowable bed inventory with the Yeosu Power Plant, a 300 MW class CFB boiler. For the test, bed pressure was reduced from design pressure of 4.5 KPa to 2.5 KPa by reducing bed inventory, at fixed turbine output, coal consumption rate and air flow. Consequently, reducing the lower bed inventory is effective to decrease bed temperature but excessive reducing might increase bed temperature due to lack of circulating fluidized materials. Also, in case of the Yeosu Plant boiler using subbituminous coal as its primary fuel, its bed temperature change is highly affected by not only the amount of bed inventory, but also the boiler capacity and coal contents.

  • Effect of height on the size and shape of carbon nanotube (CNT) aggregates in the freeboard region of a bubbling fluidized bed ($0.15m\;i.d.{\times}2.6m\;high$) has been determined. Feret diameter and Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates in the freeboard region of fluidized bed increased with increasing gas velocity. The average aggregate diameters and CNT particle number in the aggregates decreased with increasing of height in the freeboard. Aspect ratio increased as the location was closer to the surface of the dense phase, but decreased at the highest location. Solidity did not show any significant changes with height. The results showed the aggregates formation process is affected by the height in the freeboard. A correlation was proposed to predict the Heywood diameter of the CNT aggregates.
