In this paper, the fluid dynamic forces and performances of a moving airfoil in the low Reynolds number flow is addressed. In order to calculate the necessary propulsive force for the moving airfoil in a low Reynolds number flow, a lattice-Boltzmann method is used. The critical Reynolds and Strouhal numbers for the thrust generation are investigated for the four propulsion types. It was found that the Normal P&D type produces the largest thrust with highest efficiency among the investigated types. The leading edge of the airfoil has an effect of deciding the force production types, whereas the trailing edge of the airfoil plays an important role in augmenting or reducing the instability produced by the leading edge oscillation. It is believed that present results can be used to decide the optimal propulsion devices for the given Reynolds number flow.

Creatures in nature flap their wings to generate fluid dynamic forces that are required for the locomotion. Small-size creatures do not use flapping wings. Thus, it is questionable at which Reynolds number the propulsion using the flapping wings are effective. In this paper, the onset conditions of the thrust generation from the combined motion of flat plates (heaving, pitching in the motion and also tandem, biplane in the array) is investigated using a Lattice Boltzmann method. To solve the pitching motion of the plate on the regularly spaced lattices, 2-D moving boundary condition was implemented. The present method is validated by comparing the wake patterns behind a oscillating circular cylinder and its hydrodynamic characteristics with the CFD results. Present method can be applied to the design of micro flapping propulsors for biomedical use.

The shaft system of turbine is composed of rotating shaft, blades, bearings which support the shaft, packing seal which prevent the leakage of steam, and couplings which connect the shaft. Shaft system component failure, incorrect assemblage or deflection by unexpected forces causes vibration problem. And every turbine has its own characteristics in dynamic response. In this paper we propose the three-bearing supported type rotor which is real equipment and being operated this time as commercial operation. From 1996 it has a high vibration problem and there are many kinds of trial to solve this problem. In resent outage we performed a special diagnosis and carried out appropriate work. We would like to introduce and explain about this case history.
In this work, the electrophoretic motion of dsDNA molecule represented by a polymer through an artificial nano-pore in a membrane is simulated using the numerical method combining the lattice Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamic method. The polymer motion is represented by Langevin molecular dynamics technique while the fluid flow is taken into account by fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann method. The hydrodynamic interactions between the polymer and solvent in a confined space with a membrane having a hole are considered explicitly through the frictional and the random forces. The electric field intensity over the space is obtained from a finite difference method. Initially, the polymer is placed at one side of the space, and an electric field is applied to drive the polymer to the other side of the space through the nano-pore. In future, we plan to study the effect of the polymer size and the electric field on the electrophoretic velocity.

Recently linear motor has been used mainly for high speed feeding performance of machine tools. The advantages of linear motor are not only high speed but high accuracy, because it is not required the coupling and ballscrew for converting rotary to liner motion. Before applying in different moving system, the dynamometer is necessary to test the performance. In Korea, the linear motor is producing in a couple of company However, the liner motor dynamometer is not commercialized yet, like as rotary motor dynamometer. In this paper, a linear motor dynamometer is designed and manufactured using a MR damper. The dynamometer system developed in this study could be used for testing the positioning accuracy fur different loading conditions, traction forces, dynamic performance and so on.

This paper presents a new concept of a commercial vehicle seat suspension system. The proposed suspension system features an ER(electro-rheological)damper which can produce continuously tunable damping forces by control elecric fields. A dynamic model of the ER damper is first achieved by incorporating Bingham property of the ER fluid, followed by the formulation of governing equations of motion for the suspension system The effectiveness of the proposed ER seat suspension system is evaluated by investigating vibration with respect to sinusoidal inputs.
Pressures in compression pockets consists of two identical spiral scrolls are influenced by gas flow resistance in discharge process and leakages in radial and tangential directions between two scroll wraps. In this paper, considering geometrical characteristics of these members, flow resistance and refrigerant gas leakage losses, pressure variations in compression pockets are calculated. For a scroll compressor model with fixed crank mechanism, acting load on crankshaft is analyzed. And, for a vertical type crankshaft-journal bearing system used in scroll compressor, nonlinear transient response is calculated including nonlinear fluid film reaction forces of journal bearings.

This paper presents a new concept of a semi-active suspension system for a commercial vehicle seat. The proposed suspension system features an ER(electro-rheological) damper which can produce continuously tunable damping forces by control electric fields. A dynamic model of the ER damper is first achieved by incorporating Bingham property of the ER fluid, followed by the formulation of governing equations of motion for the suspension system. A sliding mode controller is then designed on the basis of the hyper-plane sliding mode scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is evaluated by investigating control performance for vibration isolation.
This study is for a design of a spindle motor for 1.8 inch hard disk drives(HDDs). Equivalent magnetic circuit model is applied for a basic design of the motor, a specific configuration design and magnetic distribution characteristics are confirmed using finite element analysis. Besides, thrust forces generated between rotor and stator core and thrust pad are calculated for pressure analysis of fluid dynamic bearings.

The engine mount of vehicle systems is role of support engine mass and isolate noise and vibration from engine disturbance forces. One of attractive candidates to achieve this goai is to utilize a semi-active ER engine mount. By applying this, we can effectively control damping force and hence the noise and vibration by just controlling the intensity of electric field. However, control performance of the engine mount may be very sensitive to temperature variation during engine operation. In this work, we Investigate dynamic performances of ER engine mount with respect to the temperature variation. In order to undertake this, a flow-mode type of ER engine mount is designed and manufactured. Displacement transmissibility is experimentally and numerically evaluated as a function of the electric field. The ER engine mount is then incorporated with full-vehicle model in order to investigate vibration control performance. After formulating the governing equation of motion, a semi-active controller is designed. The controller is implemented through a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), and control responses such as acceleration level at various engine speeds are evaluated in the frequency and time domains.
