  • Numerical and experimental studies are carried out to analyse the resistance characteristics of a hydrofoil catamaran which is advancing on calm water with uniform speed. For the hydrofoil catamaran with modified Wigley hull which has asymmetric transverse section and transom stem, the studies are carried out for the range of Froude number 0.2 to 1.0 and the angle of attack of the hydrofoil $0.0^{\circ}$ to $3.0^{\circ}$. The model tests are carried out in the ship model basin of Inha University. Also the numerical computations using a finite difference method are performed for the simulations of fluid flow around the hull form and the results are compared with the results of the model tests. The present computation results show well quantitative agreement with the experimental results. The experimental results show that the shape and angle of attack of the foils exerts a considerable influence on the running posture and resistance performance of ship.

  • In a pressurized water reactor, radioactive corrosion products (CRUD) in primary coolant system are one of the major sources for the occupational radiation exposure of the personnel in a nuclear power plant. Through the recent trend of long term fuel cycle in a nuclear power plant, radioactive corrosion products deposited in reactor core for a long time are also the cause of Axial Offset Anomaly (AOA) having an effect on reactor power by the hideout of boron. CRUD consist primarily of magnetite, nickel ferrite, cobalt ferrite, and so on. They have the characteristic of strong magnetism. Therefore it is peformed the conceptual design to develop the filter which removes the CRUD by magnetic field that is generated by an arrangement of permanent and electric magnets. Contrary to the conventional filter, the proposed filter does not interrupt the fluid flow, so there is little pressure drop and it can be used continuously. It is expected to be applied as one of the technologies for removal of the CRUD.

  • This paper presents the fabrication of a micro electromagnetic flow sensor for the liquid flow rate measurement. The micro electromagnetic flow sensor has some advantages such as a simple structure, no heat generation, a rapid response and no pressure loss. The principle of the micro electromagnetic flow sensor is based on Faraday's law. If conductive fluid passes through a magnetic field, the electromotive force is generated and detected by two electrodes on the wall of the flow channel. The flow sensor consists of two permanent magnets and a silicon flow channel with two electrodes. The dimension of the flow sensor is $9\;mm\;{\times}\;9\;mm\;{\times}\;1\;mm$. The micro flow channel is mainly fabricated by anisotropic etching of two silicon wafers, and the detection electrodes are fabricated by metal evaporation process. The characteristic of the fabricated flow sensor is obtained experimentally. When the flow rates of water with the conductance of $100-200\;{\mu}S/cm$ are 9.1 ml/min and 62 ml/min, the generated electromotive forces are $261\;{\mu}V$ and 7.3 mV, respectively.

  • Although combustion is essential in most energy generation processes, it is one of the major causes of air pollution. Exhaust pipes with circular fin were designed to study the effect of cooling the recirculated exhaust gases (EGR) of Diesel engines on the chemical composition of the exhaust gases and the reduction in the percentages of pollutant emissions. The gases examined in this study were oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO). In addition, $O_2$ concentration in the exhaust was measured. The designs adopted in this study were about exhaust pipes with solid and hollow fins around them direct surface force measurement in water using a nano size colloidal probe technique. The direct force measurement between colloidal surfaces has been an essential topic in both theories and applications of surface chemistry. As particle size is decreased from micron size down to true Carbon nano Colloid size (<10 nm), surface forces are increasingly important. Nano particles at close proximity or high solids loading are expected to show a different behavior than what can be estimated from continuum and mean field theories. The current tools for directly measuring interaction forces such as a surface force apparatus or atomic force microscopy (AFM) are limited to particles much larger than nano size. This paper use Water and CNC fluid at normal cooling system of EGR. Experimental result showed all good agreement at Re=$2.54{\times}10^4$ by free convection and Re=$3.36{\times}10^4$ by forced air furnace.

  • This is an experimental study conducted to visualize the nucleate boiling phenomena and flow regimes occurring inside the liquid pool in a closed two-phase thermosyphon. To meet this purpose, an annular-type thermosyphon was designed and manufactured using a glass tube and a stainless steel tube, being assembled axisymmetrically. The heat to be supplied to the working fluid is generated within a very thin layer of stainless steel tube wall by applying a high frequency electromagnetic field through the induction coil, axisymmetrically set around the evaporator zone. Some important results were as follows ; 1) Considering the structural complexity of the tested thermosyphon, it showed good performance for the range of heat flux 2< q" <25kW/$m^2$ and saturation vapor pressure, 0.1<Pv<1.1bar 2) different type of nucleating boiling regimes were observed as described below, -Pulse boiling regime : Flow pattern changed cyclically with time during 1 cycle of pulse boiling process. The onset of Nucleation was followed by expulsive growing of vapor bubble, resulting in the so called blow-up phenomenon, massive expulsion of large amount of liquid around the bubble. -Transient : Some spherical vapor bobbles were observed growing out from 2~3 nucleating sites, that was dispersed at the lower part of the heated tube wall in the liquid pool. But the rest upper region above the nucleating sites were filled with churns or bubbles of vapor. -Continuous nucleate boiling regime : The whole zone of evaporator was filled with lots of spherical vapor bubbles, and the bubbles showed tendency to decrease in diameter as the heat flux increased.ased.

  • Effects of bipolar pulse driving frequency between 50 kHz and 250 kHz on the discharge shapes were analyzed by measuring plasma characteristics by OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) and Langmuir probe. Plasma characteristics were modeled by a simple electric field analysis and fluid plasma modeling. Discharge shapes by a continuous dc and bipolar pulsed dc were different as a dome-type and a vertical column-type at the cathode. From OES, the intensity of 811.5 nm wavelength, the one of the main peaks of Ar, decreased to about 43% from a continuous dc to 100 kHz. For increasing from 100 kHz to 250 kHz, the intensity of 811.5 nm wavelength also decreased by 46%. The electron density decreased by 74% and the electron temperature increased by 36% at the specific position due to the smaller and denser discharge shape for increasing pulse frequency. Through the numerical analysis, the negative glow shape of a continuous dc were similar to the electric potential distribution by FEM (Finite Element Method). For the bipolar pulsed dc, we found that the electron temperature increased to maximum 10 eV due to the voltage spikes by the fast electron acceleration generated in pre-sheath. This may induce the electrons and ions from plasma to increase the energetic substrate bombardment for the dense thin film growth.

  • This paper presents the analysis condition of remediation technique of contaminated fine-grained soil and physical properties of bio-degradable drain for analysis site applicability using bio-degradable drain method. As the result, two kinds of developed degradable drains (cylindricality shaped and harmonica shaped) are satisfied the Korean Industrial Standard. And the cylindricality shaped drain has an excellent discharge capacity than that of another one. By the results of laboratory test, the citric acid is chosen as the washing agent because it has low toxicity, so it is able to minimize harmful influence to environment. Furthermore the subject contaminants were selected as Cd, Cu and Pb. Based on the field pilot test results, the most remedial efficiency is the use of reactive material applied in bio-degradable drain method with the process of injecting the washing agent and extraction of contaminated fluid.

  • In this paper, a 1MW HAWT(FIL-1000) rotor blade has been designed by BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. Also, a 3-D flow and performance analysis on the FIL-1000 rotor blade has been carried out by using the 3-D Navier-Stokes commercial solver (CFX-5.7) to provide more efficient design techniques to the large-scale HAWT engineers. The rated power and itsapproaching wind velocity at design point (TSR=7.5) are 1MW and 9.99m/s respectively. The rotor diameter is 54.5m and the rotating speed is 26.28rpm. Airfoils such as FFA W-301, DU91-W-250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418, NACA 63415 consist of the rotor blade from hub to tip. Recent CFX version, 5.7 was adopted to simulate 3-D flow field and to analyze the performance characteristics of the rotor blade. Entire mesh node number is about 730,000 and it is generated by ICEM-CFD to achieve better mesh quality The predicted maximum power occurringat the design tip speed ratio is 931.45kW. Approaching to the root, the inflow angle becomes large, which causesthe blade to be stalled in the region. Therefore, k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model was used to predict the quantitative flow information more accurately. Application of commercial CFD code to optimum blade design and performance analysis was proved to be more effective environment to HAWT blade designers.

  • The wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are employed for the purpose of studying the aerodynamic appendices and mechanism on suppression for the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). This paper takes the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as an example to conduct the wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model. The results of wind tunnel test show that it is the crash barrier that induces the vertical VIV. CFD numerical simulation results show that the distance between the curb and crash barrier is not long enough to accelerate the flow velocity between them, resulting in an approximate stagnation region forming behind those two, where the continuous vortex-shedding occurs, giving rise to the vertical VIV in the end. According to the above, 3 types of wind fairing (trapezoidal, airfoil and smaller airfoil) are proposed to accelerate the flow velocity between the crash barrier and curb in order to avoid the continuous vortex-shedding. Both of the CFD numerical simulation and the velocity field measurement show that the flow velocity of all the measuring points in case of the section with airfoil wind fairing, can be increased greatly compared to the results of original section, and the energy is reduced considerably at the natural frequency, indicating that the wind fairing do accelerate the flow velocity behind the crash barrier. Wind tunnel tests in case of the sections with three different countermeasures mentioned above are conducted and the results compared with the original section show that all the three different countermeasures can be used to control VIV to varying degrees.
