  • Aiming to prepare high performance magnetorheological fluid, firstly, oleic acid and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate are chosen as surfactants. And then, the mechanical stirring process including stirring time, stirring temperature and stirring speed are optimized by measuring sedimentation ratio and zero-field viscosity. Finally, the properties of prepared magnetorheological fluid are elaborated. The results indicate that the compounding of oleic acid and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate can improve the properties of magnetorheological fluid distinctively, and the optimistic compounding content is 4g:4g or 5g:5g. The surfactants adding orders and the second stirring time have little effect on the properties of magnetorheological fluid, while obviously of the first stirring time, temperature and speed. Moreover, the sedimentation ratio of prepared magnetorheological fluid is less than 5.2% in two weeks, the zero-field viscosity is smaller than $0.6Pa{\cdot}s$ at $20^{\circ}C$, and the maximum yield stress is higher than 50 kPa.

After the materials and mix conditions of stabilizing slurry investigated and tested, we propose materials and optimum mix design according to testing items including funnel viscosity, we propose materials and optimum mix design according to testing items including funnel viscosity, fluid loss, cake thickness and specific gravity. As this results, we select optimum mix design that the upper limit ratio of bentonite is 2.0%, polymer is 0.1% considering the funnel viscosity and dispersion agent is 0.05% considering the fluid loss. Also we select all materials which are composed of GTC4 as bentonite, KSTP as polymer and Bentocryl as dispersion agent. All test results are satisfied our specifications for stabilizing slurry.

  • This study investigates the effect of temperature and electric field strength on the Bingham characteristics of Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids which change their Yield shear stress and viscosity by temperature and electric field strength. It is found that under constant temperature the Yield sheal stress and viscosity of ER fluids proportionally increase with the applied electric field strength, and under constant applied electric field strength the Yield shear stress and viscosity of ER fluids decrease with the increasing temperature. These results are considered to be applied to the fluid and pneumatic power industry.

  • In this study, the enhancement of the thermal conductivity of water in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, MWCNT, was investigated. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, SDS, and Polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP, were employed as the dispersant. SDS or PVP was added in pure water. And then, MWCNT of 0.0005, 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, 0.004, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.02 vol% was dispersed respectively. The thermal conductivity and the viscosity were measured with a transient hot-wire instrument built for this study and the DV II+ Pro viscometer. The results showed that PVP had good thermal conductivity at 300 wt% and this was better than that of SDS 100 wt%, also, the viscosity of nano fluid added PVP rapidly increased until 0.02 vol%.

  • In this paper we report fluid flow characteristics of $AL_2O_3$ nanoparicles suspended in water. Especially, the effects of volume fraction with the range of 0.01% to 0.3% and inner diameter of tubes on the pressure drop and the effective viscosity of $AL_2O_3$ nanoparicles suspended in water are experimentally investigated. Experimental results are compared with analytic solution which can be derived with Einstein model. We confirm whether Einstein model which have been used to determine the effective viscosity of nanofluids is valid or not.

  • The rheological and penetration characteristics of sodium alginate and xanthan gum aqueous solutions were analyzed for the development of biopolymer-based injection materials. The results of viscosity measurements for the rheological characteristics analysis show that all aqueous biopolymer solutions exhibit a tendency for shear-thinning, i.e., the apparent viscosity decreases as the shear rate increases. In addition, a regression analysis using several models (Power-law, Casson, Sisko, and Cross) was applied to the shear-thinning fluid analysis results, the highest accuracy was determined by applying the power-law model. The micromodel experiment for the penetration characteristics analysis determined that all biopolymer aqueous solutions show higher pore saturation than water, and that pore saturation tends to increase as the flow rate and concentration increases. When comparing the rheological and penetration characteristics of the biopolymer aqueous solution used in this study, the xanthan gum aqueous solution showed a fully developed shear-thinning tendency, unlike the sodium alginate aqueous solution. This tendency is considered to have the advantage of enhancement injectability and pore saturation.

  • To obtain an excellent product and decide on optimum molding conditions, it is important to establish the relationship between molding conditions and viscosity. The composites is treated as a pseudoplastic fluid, and the expansional/contractional viscosity of the fiber-reinforced polymeric composites is measured using the parallel plastometer, and the model for flow state has been simulated with the viscosity. The effects of expansional slip parameter $\alpha_{e}$, and expansional/contractional viscosity ratio ${\mu}_{\gamma}$, on the mold filling parameters are also discussed.

  • To product multi-grade oil like engine oil, a sort of mineral base oil is mixed with a fundamental additive liquid package and a polymer liquid as viscosity index improver in order to improve the lubricating property of oil. That is, engine oil is the mixture of more than two fluids. In this paper, it will be systematically organized the governing equation describing non-Newtonian thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics. Then, in order to find how the thermal analysis effect on the bearing performance lubricated with the mixture of multi-fluids, it will be compared to the performances between the mixture of each liquid to be blended and multi-grade engine oil as a single fluid in a high speed journal bearing. It is found that, in the case of lower viscosity oil, the difference of pressure distribution between the above two cases turns out to be existed, even if the load capacity is same level.

  • This study investigates experimentally the optimum mix proportion and design factors of the stabilizing liquid used for excavation of the massive and deep slurry wall in LNG in-ground tank before pouring concrete. Considering those site conditions, the stabilizing liquid used for excavation of slurry wall has to be satisfied with some requirements including specific gravity, fluid loss, cake thickness, funnel viscosity and sand content in order to construct the safe and qualified slurry wall. For this purpose, we select materials including bentonite, polymer and dispersion agent. After performing many tests for materials and mix design process, we propose the optimum mix proportion that the upper limit ratio of bentonite is $2.0\%$, polymer is $0.1\%$ considering the funnel viscosity and dispersion agent is $0.05\%$considering the fluid loss of the stabilizing liquid. Also, we select all materials which are consisted of GTC4 as bentonite, KSTP as polymer and Bentocryl 86 as dispersion agent. Based on the results of this study, the optimum mix proportion of the stabilizing liquid is applicable to excavate the deep and massive slurry wall in LNG in-ground tank successfully.

  • The horizontal movement of sloping ground due to flow liquefaction has caused many pile foundations to fail, especially those in ports and harbor structures. In this study, a virtual case is assumed in which flow liquefaction is induced by earthquake loads in a fully saturated infinite sand slope with a single pile installation. Under the assumption that the movement of liquefied ground is viscous fluid flow, the influence of ground movement due to flow liquefaction on the pile behavior was analyzed. Since the liquefied soil is assumed as a viscous fluid, its viscosity must be evaluated, and the viscosity was estimated by the dropping ball method ,md the pulling bar method. Finally, the influence of the flow of liquefied soil on a single pile installed in an infinite slope was analyzed by a numerical method.
