A Study on the Two-dimensional Formation Control of Free Surface of Magnetic Fluid by Electromagnetic Force (전자기력에 의한 자성유체의 2차원 자유표면 형상 제어에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the control of the free surface deformation of a magnetic fluid for the change in electromagnetic force is discussed. The free surface of magnetic fluid is formed by the balance of surface force, gravity, pressure difference, magnetic normal pressure and magnetic body force. Magnetic fluid in characteristics of fluid adjusted to the opposite direction of the gravity direction. Thus, the device of a magnetic fluid proposed the complete zero-leakage sealing, oscillator for surface control, boundary layer control, MHD, flow control, flow using magnetic levitation system and surface actuator. This study show the deformation of surface rise due to the intensity of the magnetic field and possibility of two-dimensional control of magnetic fluid through the feedback data of hall sensor.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid.   • Process gases with vapor or liquid phase as well as gas phase may experience alteration in itself or be contaminated in the fluid pipe to the process chamber. And thus it result in as particles or defects on the substrates in semiconductor, LCD, LED manufacturing. Purifiers and filters are used for control of contamination. However, none of detection device is available in the delivery line. In this paper, we propose simple device with lighting and sensing in order to predict contamination of the fluid or the tube wall. For some general purpose gases, it showed constant voltage output regardless of the flow rates. But, the smoke and the moisture in the air lowered the figure due to its concentration. Numerical values for several solid and liquid media were obtained. And, the operating temperature tendency was investigated.

  • Intravenous(IV) therapy being in use for many patients may cause serious side effects such as infiltration, extravasation. To minimize such side effects, it is important to detect symptoms appearing when fluid escapes from blood vessel to tissue as soon as possible. This paper describes a device which has been developed to detect IV infiltration early using optical sensor. The device detects IV infiltration as measuring intensity of lights reflected from that lights after emitting lights in IV therapy site. The lights are consisted of 4 different waves which provide different reflection ratio depending the fluid used in IV therapy. The experimental results show that the device can be used to detect IV infiltration early.

  • This paper presents the enhancement of oxygen transfer efficiency using the vibrating intravascular lung assist device (VIVLAD) in in-vitro experiments for patients having chronic respiratory problems. The test section was a cylinder duct with the inner diameter of 30 mm. The flow rate was controlled by the pump and monitored by a built-in flow meter. The vibration apparatus was composed of a piezo-vibrator, a function generator. and a power amplifier. The direction of vibration was radial to the fluid flow. Gas flow rates of up to 6 l/min through the 120-cm-Jong hollow fibers have been achieved by exciting a piezo-vibrator. The output of PVDF sensor were investigated by various frequencies in VIVLAD. The experimental results showed that VIVLAD would be enhance oxygen transfer efficiency.

  • This paper proposes a tube pump composed of small-sized cams and followers for an implantable intrathecal drug infusion device. Each followers is driven by a cam and liquid is discharged by a sequential reciprocal motion of the followers. The advantage of this structure is that it allows the pump to be clean and valveless. To design a small-sized, low power pump some analysis were performed to determine the design parameters of the cam, follower and the tube. To verify the feasibility of the experiment, a prototype was manufactured and its operating characteristics were investigated. Experimental results were in accordance with the expected results obtained from analysis.

  • In order to suggest the methodology for achieving anti-vortex device within multi pump intake well, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were conducted for two alternative suggestions. Multi-intake sump model with anti-vortex device basins were designed and the characteristics of submerged vortex were investigated in the flow field by numerical simulation. From the results of simulations, to install the horizontal plate and vertical cross plates within basins were effective for preventing air-induction vortex.

  • The application of an excavator can be expanded to various works through change of end-effector. In this paper, a gripper, which can pick up and rotate a fixed formal stone, was developed. The device was designed and produced to pick up and rotate a stone for an excavator. The maximum weight of stone was computed to prevent from reversal in according to each displacement of attachments. The necessary force of a hydraulic cylinder to grip a stone was obtained by simulation.

  • Semiactive control systems have received considerable attention for protecting structures against natural hazards such as strong earthquakes and high winds, because they not only offer the reliability of passive control systems but also maintain the versatility and adaptability of fully active control systems. Among the many semiactive control devices, magnetorheological (MR) fluid dampers comprise one particularly promising class. In the field of civil engineering, much research and development on MR fluid damper-based control systems has been conducted since B. F. Spencer first introduced this unique semiactive device to civil engineering applications in mid 1990s. In 2001, MR fluid dampers were applied to the full-scale in-service civil engineering structures for the first time. This state-of-the-art paper includes a detailed literature review of control algorithms considering the characteristics of fm fluid dampers. This review provides references to semiactive control systems using MR fluid dampers. The MR fluid damper-based semiactive control systems are shown to have the potential for mitigating the responses of full-scale civil engineering structures under natural hazards.

Effects of Long-term Exposure of High and Low Humidity on Thin-film Humidity Sensors

  • The effects of long-term exposure of high and low humidity on thin-film humidity sensors are investigated. Five commercially available thin-film humidity sensors are initially calibrated in a humidity chamber as a reference before longterm exposure to high and low humidity. Then, the sensors are kept in a high-humidity environment (~95 %rh) for four months. After the exposure, the sensors are calibrated in the same manner as the initial calibration. Consequently, the device reading values from the humidity sensors are elevated up to about 5 %rh. Interestingly, the degree of elevation by the high-humidity exposure shows a negative correlation with the price of the humidity sensors. Humidity sensors are then kept in a low-humidity environment (~10 %rh) for another four months. After the exposure, a calibration similar to the initial calibration is performed. As a result, the device reading from humidity sensors is decreased, indicating a recovery from the effect of high-humidity exposure. The durability test conducted in this study provides experimental evidence for the use of thin-film humidity sensors in high-humidity environments such as greenhouses and food factories for a long period of time.
