  • The cycle of heat engine which produces the maximum power output is constructed when heat sources are finitely constant, and the maximum power as a thermodynamic limit of the engine, is obtained. The characteristics of the maximum power cycle are as follows, which represent the operation conditions and design conditions of the heat engine to produce the maximum power output. In heat exchangers, the temperature profiles of the heat source and the working fluid have the same functional formula and the ratio of the working fluid temperature to the heat source temperature is constant. When heat capacity flow rates(product of the specific heat and the mass flow rate) of the working fluid as well as the heat source are constant, the values of those of working fluid exist between those of two heat sources. The relation of the temperature and the heat capacity flow rate is established without the states of the heat sources and the capacities of heat exchangers, which is ( $T_{h}$/ $T_{H}$)( $C_{h}$/ $C_{H}$)=( $T_{1}$/ $T_{L}$)( $c_{1}$/ $c_{L}$)=1. The capacity of the heat exchanger of hot side is equal to that of cold side regardless of the states of the heat sources and the total capacities of heat exchangers.hangers.ers.

  • This paper describes reliability characteristics of an air foil journal bearing for high-speed turbomachinery at a room temperature. To verify the reliability of air foil journal bearing, lift-off characteristics, load carrying capacity, and 10,000 cycle start-stop test were performed with a motor-driven test rig. A lift-off test shows the relationship between the rotating speed of the shaft and the frictional torque with bearing surface. About a load-carrying capacity, the tested air foil journal bearing produced a load capacity of 500N at an operating speed of 15,000rpm, which is compared with results of numerical analysis and empirical coefficients. Finally, the trends in change of start torque, stop torque, and bearing temperature were shown during a 10,000-cycle start-stop test of an air foil journal bearing. We found that an air foil bearing performs well, as a supported bearing for the high-speed turbocompressor.

  • In this paper, suitable working fluid of 1MW Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) with liquid-vapor ejector using effluent from power plant is selected. The results of comparison performance of 5 refrigerants are as follows; R600a, R134a, R1270, R236fa, R235fa. The operating parameters considered in this study include the condensation capacity evaporation capacity and efficiency. As a result of comparison of basic ORC system and with liquid-vapor ejector, with ORC system presents the higher system efficiency since the ejector makes the turbine outlet pressure lower than condensation pressure through its pressure recovery. Also, this ejector ORC system is advantageous in miniaturizing the size of components owing to decrease of evaporation capacity and condensation capacity.

  • Target generation capacity of geothermal power generation pilot plant project through the Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) with a doublet system down to 5 km depth was estimated. Production and re-injection temperatures of geothermal fluid were assumed $160^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively, based on reservoir temperature of $180^{\circ}C$ calculated from the geothermal gradient of $33^{\circ}C$ in Pohang area. In this temperature range, 0.11 of thermal efficiency of the binary generation cycle is a practical choice. Assuming flow rates of 40 kg/sec, which is possible in current EGS technology, gross power generation capacity is estimated to reach 1.848 MW. Net generation considering auxiliary power including pumping power for geothermal fluid and condensing (cooling) energy of working fluid can be 1.5 MW.

  • In this study, using the governing equations for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water dispersed within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing on a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluids, water dispersed within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are showed that the friction force and bearing load capacity decrease as increasing the volume percent of water.

  • The magneto-rheological fluid expresses different cohesiveness according to the strength of the external electric current. To manufacture the magneto-rheological fluid damper that uses such characteristics of the fluid, a flow analysis of the inner damper was conducted to forecast the damper's capacity. In addition, using the finite element method software, analysis on the characteristics of electromagnetic field around the coil operation unit inside the damper. Based on the result of the analysis, a single core damper and a double core damper were built and tested for their dynamic function. Based on the result of the experiment, the propriety of the flow analysis was demonstrated, and the proposed model was verified.

  • Hydrostatic bearings are widely used in precision machines due to their high motion guide accuracy, low friction and high load carrying capacity. It is very useful to estimate the moving characteristics of hydrostatic bearings in the design stage. A new method is suggested for the analysis of fluid film in hydrostatic bearings. A combined mesh of 8 node solid elements with negligible deformation resistance and spring-dashpot elements is used in conjunction with the user subroutine of ABAQUS to represent the fluid film. The mesh can be used to capture the deformation of the bearing structure as well as the varying properties of fluid film. Analysis results from the finite element model are compared with theoretical solutions, results from FLUENT analysis and some previous works. With this method, static and dynamic analyses of the system containing the bearings can be performed efficiently.

  • In winter season, the snow and ice accretion on the bottom of the high speed railway rolling stock and boogie part has fallen at a high speed from the ballast section (gravel section for the transmission of the rolling stock load received by sleepers and fixing sleepers), causing the gravel to be scattered, thereby damaging the railway rolling stock structures and facilities. In order to solve these problems, the gravel scattering prevention net, manual de-icing, and movable hot air machine were used, but their efficiency was low. For the more efficient de-icing than ever before, an optimum material for de-icing fluid for high speed railway rolling stock was developed by evaluating the ice melting capacity, kinematic viscosity, evaporation of the material used as a chemical de-icing fluid. Four kinds of organic acid salts (sodium formate, sodium acetate, potassium formate and potassium acetate) and two different alcohols (propylene glycol, glycerol) were used as evaluation materials. Potassium formate, potassium acetate, and propylene glycol had similar ice melting capacities in the indoor test, but the propylene glycol showed the best ice melting capacity in spraying the system simulation test. This is because the kinematic viscosity of propylene glycol was 2.989029 St, which is higher than those of other materials therefore, it could stay longer on the ice and de-icing. In addition, potassium formate and potassium acetate were difficult to be used since the crystals precipitated and adversely affected the appearance of the rolling stock. The propylene glycol is the most optimum as an de-icing fluid for the high speed railway rolling stock.
