MODELING UNCERTAINTY IN QUASI-HYDROSTATIC ISOTHERMAL SELF-GRAVITATING SLAB

  • The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is applied to construct the dispersion of fluctuations in quasi-hydrostatic configuration of an isothermal self-gravitating slab. The uncertainty of the implementation is evaluated, and a novel technique (acceleration error) is proposed to weaken this uncertainty. The two-fluid quasi-hydrostatic diffusion of small fluctuations is used to support the importance of the acceleration error. The results show that the uncertainty converges to a few percent by increasing of the SPH particle numbers. Considering the acceleration error weakens the uncertainty, and prohibits the serious dynamical consequences in slow dispersion of fluctuation in the quasi-hydrostatic evolution of the slab.

  • The Lagrangian dispersion of fluid particles in inhomogeneous turbulence is investigated by a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. Four points Hermite interpolation in the homogeneous direction and Chebyshev polynomials in the inhomogeneous direction is adopted to simulate the fluid particle dispersion. An inhomogeneity of Lagrangian statistics in turbulent boundary layer is investigated by releasing many particles at several different wall-normal locations and tracking those particles. The fluid particle dispersions and Lagrangian structure functions of velocity are scaled by the Kolmogorov similarity. The auto-correlations of velocity and acceleration are shown at the different releasing locations. Effect of initial particle location on the dispersion is analyzed by the probability density function at the several downstreams and time instants.

  • The transient dynamic-response analysis of fuel-storage tanks of flying vehicles accelerating in the vertical direction is achieved with finite element method. A fuel-storage tank is a representative example of the fluid-structure interaction problem, in which structure and fluid media interact strongly. For the accurate analysis of this complicated fluid-structure system, we employed ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) coupling method. Two types of fuel-storage tanks, one with two baffles and the other without baffle, are considered to examine the effect of baffles. The fuel-storage tank with baffles shows more uniform hydrodynamic pressure distribution, resulting effective stress in structural region and faster convergence from transient to steady states. MSC/Dytran, a commercial FEM software for the 3D coupled dynamic analysis, is used for this analysis.

  • Dams play a vital role in the development and sustainment in a country. Failure of dams leads to the catastrophic event with sudden release of water and is of great concern. Hence earthquake-resistant design of dams is of prime importance. The present study involves static, modal and transient analyses of dam-reservoir-foundation system using finite element software ANSYS 15. The dam and the foundation are modeled with 2D plane strain element "PLANE 42" and the reservoir by fluid acoustic element "FLUID 29" with proper consideration of fluid-structure interaction. An expression for the fundamental period of concrete dams is developed based on modal analysis. Seismic response of gravity dams subjected to earthquake acceleration is evaluated in terms of peak displacement and stress.

  • Hydraulic hose assemblies deliver a fluid power in various oil pressure equipment such as construction machinery, automobile, aircraft, industrial machinery, machine tools and machinery for ships. Also, they are widely used as pipes in oil pressure circuit. When we estimate their lifetime, it is essential to conduct an accelerated life test by choosing the factor that suits the usage condition of the test object since traditional test method for estimating lifetime under the influence of various external factors incurs hardship in terms of time and expenses. The objective of this study is to propose an acceleration model that takes both temperature and pressure without flexing condition into consideration. The lifetime is estimated by applying the proposed temperature-nonthermal acceleration model to the test data. And we compare the proposed temperature-nonthermal acceleration model and the accelerated life equation suggested by John(1994).

  • An interest in Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) finite element methods has been increased due to more accurate responses in Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) problems. The multi-material ALE approach was applied to the prediction of the acceleration response of free-fall lifeboat, and its responses were compared to those of the single-material ALE one. It could be found that even though there was no big difference in the simulation responses of two methods, the single-material and multi-material ALE ones, the latter multi-material ALE method showed a little bit more close response to those of experimental results compared to the former single-material ALE one, especially in the x- and z-direction acceleration responses. Through this study, it could be found that several parameters in the ALE algorithms have to be examined more carefully for a good structural safety assessment of FSI problems.

  • The role of neuroimaging in patients with acute ischemic stroke has been gradually increasing. The ultimate goal of stroke imaging is to make a streamlined imaging workflow for safe and efficient treatment based on optimized patient selection. In the era of multimodal comprehensive imaging in strokes, imaging based on computed tomography (CT) has been preferred for use in acute ischemic stroke, because, despite the unique strengths of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), MRI has a longer scan duration than does CT-based imaging. However, recent improvements, such as multicoil technology and novel MRI acceleration techniques, including parallel imaging, simultaneous multi-section imaging, and compressed sensing, highlight the potential of comprehensive MR-based imaging for strokes. In this review, we discuss the role of stroke imaging in acute ischemic stroke management, as well as the strengths and limitations of MR-based imaging. Given these concepts, we review the current MR acceleration techniques that could be applied to stroke imaging and provide an overview of the previous research on each essential sequence: diffusion-weighted imaging, gradient-echo, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, contrast-enhanced MR angiography, and MR perfusion imaging.

  • This paper describes dynamic manipulability analysis of robotic arms moving in viscous fluid. The Manipulability is a functionality of manipulator system in a given configuration and under the limits of joint ability with respect to the tasks required to bt performed. To investigate the manipulability of underwater robotic arms, a modeling and analysis method are presented. The dynamic equation of motion of underwater manipulator is derived from the Lagrange - Euler equation considering with the hydraulic forces caused by added mass, buoyancy and hydraulic drag. The hydraulic drag term in the equation: is established as analytical form using Denavit - Hartenberg (D-H) link coordination of manipulator. Two analytical approaches based on Manipulability Ellipsoid are presented to visualize the manipulability of robotic arm moving in viscous fluid. The one is scaled ellipsoid which transforms the boundary of joint torque to acceleration boundary of end-effector by normalizing the torque in joint space while the other is shifted ellipsoid which depicts total acceleration boundary of end-effector by shifting the ellipsoid in work space. An analysis example of 2-link manipulator with proposed analysis scheme is presented to validate the method.

A Study of Life Characteristics of Butterfly Valve Seated Rubber by Accelerated Life Test (고무시트 버터플라이밸브의 가속수명시험을 통한 수명특성 연구)

  • Butterfly valve seated rubber has been widely used in water works and industrial fields because it has advantages which are small installation area and low weight. The size and material of butterfly valve have been selected by service environments and purposes. But there are out of the ordinary to find papers for the life characteristics of the butterfly valve. So, this study carries out the accelerated life test, which has an acceleration factor with pressure, using performance and life test equipment. Accelerated model is adopted with 3 stress level and the inverse power law model to estimate the life of the test samples. After the analysis of the test result, accelerated index has 7.0 and the acceleration factor has 208 which is applied with field condition with the pressure 6.3 bar.

  • Characteristics of the high frequency pulsatile flow have been investigated experimentally to understand the flow phenomena in the hydraulic system. One axis fatigue test bed, which is widely used for automobile field test, is used. Four pressure transducers, an amplifier and a A/D convertor are used to obtain the high frequency pulsatile pressure waveform in hydraulic system. The characteristics of frequency are analyzed by power spectrum method. According to the variations of pump input pressure and actuator acceleration frequency, the pressure is measured with or without an accumulator. The amplitude of pressure with accumulator is very lower than those without accumulator due to absorbing function of accumulator. As the frequency of actuator acceleration is increased, the effect of accumulator become very important to decrease the amplitude of pulsatile pressure waveform with high frequencies.
