A numerical method using FLUENT code was employed to investigate fluid drag and lift forces on a cylinder in a group of circular cylinders, subjected to a uniform cross flow. The cylinders can be arranged in tandem or in a staggered arrangements relative to the free stream flow. A vortex street behind the cylinder pairs or jets between the cylinders forms according to the arrangements. Vibration on a cylinder can occurs due to vortex shedding, fluid-elastic stiffness and wake galloping. The flow is first investigated and then the forces acting on the cylinder are calculated. The lift and drag forces on an elastically mounted cylinder in the wake of an upstream fixed cylinder arise from the mean flow plus velocity and pressure gradients in the wake. The analytical results of two staggered cylinder were compared with the existing experimental ones for validation of the present method. The analytical results of the forces were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The present method can be used for the analysis of the fluid induced vibration where the group of circular cylinders are subjected to a cross flow.
A numerical analysis study has performed in terms of fluid dynamics to identify the wall thinning generated in the main feedwater isolation valve body of a nuclear power plant. To review the relations between flow characteristics and the wall thinning induced by flow accelerated corrosion (FAC), numerical analysis using FLUENT code and ultrasonic tests (UT) were performed. The local velocities according to the analysis results were compared with the distribution of the measured wall thickness by ultrasonic tests. The comparison results show that the local velocity in the x-direction had no correlation with the wall thinning but the local velocity in the y-direction and turbulence intensity had a great influence on that. These results provide a good match to those of the previous studies - locations colliding vertically against components undergo severe wall thinning. These results may be utilized to the design modification and the wall thinning management for main feedwater isolation valves for preventing the wall thinning degradation.
Recently, the manufacturing of micro-cavity by means of laser surface texturing (LST) technique and low friction study by the LST have been in great progress. Most of current works have been dealing with the effect of cavity on friction and wear. The main objective of the present study was to investigate numerically two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces, and this study utilized the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3). For the evaluation, preliminary simulation was conducted and numerical predictions were compared with the analytic solution obtained from the Reynolds's equation. Mainly, the present study investigated the influence of dimple depth, pattern shapes, and film thickness on lubrication characteristics related to the reduction of friction. It is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces. In particular, substantial decrease in shear stresses was observed as the lubricant film thickness decreases. For instance, in the case of the film thickness of 0.01 mm, the estimated shear stress decreases up to about 40%. It indicates that the film thickness would be important factor in designing the micro-dimpled surfaces. Furthermore, it was observed that such a optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses.
A numerical study of the flow characteristics inside a U-type circular tube is carried out in this paper. The numerical simulations carried out by using a Navier-Stokes code which is commercially available. Before detailed numerical simulations, validation of present numerical approach is made by comparing numerical solutions with experimental data. Numerical simulations are performed to study the effect of curvature on the flow characteristics inside a U-type tube. Numerical solutions show that a significant effect on the secondary flow structure in the cross section of the tube, especially in the curved section is shown when the curvature ratio, ratio of curvature to tube diameter, is smaller than about 3.5. As the curvature ratio decreases below 3.5, a counter rotating vortex is found below the primary vortex in the cross section of the tube. Another dramatic change of the flow structure is the formation of streamwise separation zone when the curvature ratio is decreased below 1.25.
Based on the eigenfunction expansion method, the wave-absorbing performance of a square or circular pile breakwater was investigated. Flow separation resulting from sudden contraction and expansion is generated and is the main cause of significant energy loss. Therefore, evaluation of an exact energy loss coefficient is critical to enhancing the reliability of the mathematical model. To obtain the energy loss coefficient, 2-dimensional turbulent flow is analyzed using the FLUENT commercial code, and the energy loss coefficient can be obtained from the pressure difference between upstream and downstream. It was found that energy loss coefficient of circular pile is 20% that of a square pile. To validate the fitting equation for the energy loss coefficient, comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results (Kakuno and Liu, 1993) was made for square and circular piles with good agreement. The array of square piles also provides better wave-absorbing efficiency than the circular piles, and the optimal porosity value is near P=0.1.
In this research, the performance predictions of the submersible mixer were investigated. The variation of the performance characteristics by changing the impeller design parameters were discussed through the flow calculation results by using a commercial program, FLUENT. The performance of the submersible mixers is related to the velocity diffusion profiles downstream of the impeller and also the required input motor power to mix the fluid. In this study, the various design parameters such as the number of blade, the hub and tip diameters, the impeller blade profiles and revolution speed of the blades were taken for the fixed values. The blade sweep direction, the chord length distribution along with the radius of the blade and the inlet blade angle were changed to make different testing models. The flow calculation results show the effect of the changed design parameters on the performance of the submersible mixers and also give some helpful information for designing more efficient submersible mixers.
Because the mixing efficiency is influenced remarkably by varying the geometrical configurations, the study of flow characteristics inside the mechanical agitator is very important to improve the performances. The draught tube in the agitator makes intermixing between the screw and tube by interrupting radial flow, and it makes circulation region in a mixing chamber. In general, the helical screw agitator with a draught tube (HSA) is proved more efficient to mix than the others. Consequently, such as the shapes of helical screw, number of pitches and the variation of angular velocity are the main parameters for improving the capacity of HSA. And also the suspension of the solid particles in the agitator can be determined these parameters. The rate of solids suspension in the mixing chamber was quantified with a statistical average value, of. Numerical analyses were carried out, using a commercial CFD code, Fluent, to obtain the velocity, pressure and particle distributions under steady, laminar flow and no-slip conditions. Results are graphically depicted with various parameters.
The two-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow behind rectangular bluff bodies between two parallel plates was analyzed numerically. The steady state flow and the vortex flow behind rectangular bluff bodies in the channel were investigated for two regimes i.e., the laminar(Re = 100, 300, 500) and the turbulent flows(Re = 10⁴∼10/sup 6/). The vortex shedding was generated by a physical disturbance(6%) numerically imposed at the rear of the bluff bodies for a short time. It was observed that the perturbed flow became periodic after a transient period. And in the case of unsteady inflow, the sinusoidal pulsatile flow was applied as the inlet condition in the turbulent flow of Reynolds number of 1.0×10/sup 5/. FLUENT code was employed to solve the problems. The power-law scheme was used to get stable linearized equations and the PISO algorithm was applied to finding the solution of them.
CFD analysis was performed to figure out flow behavior in the inlet plenum of new research reactor where coolant is injected to the flow tubes with the fuel assembly. The computation results showed that large-scale vortices are generated in the inlet plenum by flow stream injected from inlet pipe. These vortices are divided into small vortices and reversed their revolution. They may lead to flow-induced vibration of fuel assembly, moreover, which has been regarded as a cause of fretting wear of fuel assembly. Also there is an another important thing that average velocity of each flow-tube is uneven showing difference in maximum 18%. So it has been suggested that perforated baffle will be installed to prevent the formation of vortex in the inlet plenum. Two perforated baffles, one is flow skirt and the other is muffler type flow straightener, were proposed and their effect was evaluated using commercial CFD code, Fluent. According to CFD analysis for two perforated baffles, it was confirmed that both of them can prevent or reduce vortex formation in the inlet plenum and make average velocity of each flow tube more even.
Flow around a guided missile in high maneuver, i.e. at a high angle of attack, shows complex phenomena. It is well known that even in geometrically symmetric conditions the flow around a missile at high angles of attack can generate unexpected large side forces and yaw moments due to asymmetric vortices. In this paper, a CFD code (FLUENT) based on the Navier-Stokes equations was used for the numerical analysis to find a suitable numerical mechanism for generation of asymmetric vortices. It is shown that a numerical technique of applying different surface roughness to a specific area of the missile nose surface gives the best fit in comparison with the experimental results. In addition, a numerical investigation of variations of side forces and pressure distributions with angle of attack and roll angle was conducted for the purpose of identifying the source of vortex asymmetries.
