  • Mercury is one of the most hazardous air pollutants. Recently, mercury has been a concern in domestic and overseas because it has lethal toxicity, long distance transport, persistence and bioaccumulation in the environment. Stationary combustion sources such as coal-fired power plants, waste incinerators, and cement kilns are the major sources of mercury emissions. The objectives of this study were to measure the concentration for mercury from coal-fired power plants and to calculate emission factor to estimate its emission. The results showed that the mercury concentrations in the flue gas were 1.63-3.03 mg/$Sm^3$ in anthracite-fired power plants (average 2.32 mg/$Sm^3$) and 1.95-3.33 mg/$Sm^3$ in bituminous-fired power plants (average 2.6 mg/$Sm^3$). Mercury emission factor was estimated as 25.74 mg/ton for anthracite-fired power plants and 12.48 mg/ton for bituminous-fired power plants. Because actual measurements are limited in quantity, it is desirable to refine our estimates by extending the actual measurements.

  • Recently a novel bio refinery process with using nonedible biomass, especially microalgae, has been developed in order to directly reduce $CO_2$ concentration from flue gas and simultaneously produce renewable bio fuel. Micro algae-to-biofuel processes are composed of microalgae cultivation, harvesting, lipid extraction, and bio fuel conversion. So, there are concerns about the energy efficiencies of bio refinery processes. In this study, the net energy ratio of microalgae processes were calculated for the microalgae produced from a pilot photobioreacto using $CO_2$ released from coal combustion. In this study, trans-esterification and pyrolysis processes were used to analyze the net energy efficiencies. Micro algae-to-biofuel processes might produce bio fuels with the higher energy than that of the total consumed energy for cultivation, harvesting, extraction and conversion. If the lipid content of microalgae was higher, the trans-esterification conversion process was more effective than that of pyrolysis process.

  • The effect of moisture in flue gas on SCR reaction of NMO (Natural Manganese Ore) was studied. The experiments were performed over NMO with NO, $NH_3$ at independent condition or simultaneous condition. $NH_3$ can be oxidized at low temperature by the lattice oxygen in NMO catalyst. The concentration of NO and $NO_2$ by $NH_3$ oxidation with moisture is higher above $300^{\circ}C$ than that without moisture. Moisture would competitively adsorb with NO and $NH_3$ on NMO catalyst. It caused poor NOx conversion to compete against $H_2O$. Besides the NOx conversion efficiency was reduced at below $250^{\circ}C$ because of the dipped $H_2O$ competitively adsorbed $NH_3$. The reactivity of NMO varied with the calcination temperature and the optimum calcination temperature was $400^{\circ}C$ regardless $H_2O$.

  • Cold bed and $30kW_{th}$ pilot bed tests using circulating fluidized bed (CFB) were conducted to apply oxy-fuel technology for waste sludge combustion as a carbon capture and storage technology. In cold bed test, the minimum fluidization velocity ($u_{mf}$) and superficial velocity for fast fluidization was determined as 0.120 m/s and 2.5 m/s, respectively. In the pilot test, air and oxy-fuel combustion experiments for waste sludge were conducted using CFB unit. The flue-gas temperature in 21~25% oxy-fuel combustion was higher than that of air and up to 30% oxy-fuel combustion. In addition, the concentration of carbon dioxide was more than 80% with the oxygen injection range from 21% to 25% in oxy-fuel CFB waste sludge combustion.

  • In desulfurization facilities of oil-fired power plant, gypsum scale is attached in the absorber inner surface as the operating time increases. For this reason, the maximum possible load of the power generation is set down, resulting in further generation stop. Cleaning of absorber for scale removal can be determined at the time of setting down of the maximum possible load. In this study, 6 weeks before the maximum possible load of the power generation was down set, at the same time and desulfurization facilities outlet $SO_2$ concentration value was more than 130ppm, absorber differential pressure exceeded $380mmH_2O$, it was confirmed to be the time that has elapsed 44 weeks after the previous absorber cleaning. Cleaning time of the absorber was predicted to be a time which has elapsed 50 weeks from the previous cleaning time.

  • On the condition of adequate air supply, complete removal of carbon monoxide, occurred above $650^{\circ}C$. Using catalysts, the oxidation of carbon monoxide occurred at lower temperatures; on both $MnO_2 \;and\;30%\;MnO_2-70%\;CuO\;at\;250{\circ}C,\;on\;CuO\;at\;450{\circ}C,\;on\;50%\;MnO_2-50%\;CuO\;at\;200{\circ}C,\;and\;on\;70%\;MnO_2-30%\;CuO\;at\;180{\circ}C$. Manganese dioxide (p-type) showed higher activity than cupric oxide (n-type) and a catalyst consisting of 60% $MnO_2-40%$ CuO had the highest activity of all the $MnO_2$-CuO mixture. Over the range of transitional temperature, carbon monoxide removal efficiency decreased linearly with increasing inlet carbon monoxide concentration while temperature was fixed. Residence time of gases in the catalytic reactor, in the range of 0.9 to 1.8 seconds, gave no effect on carbon monoxide conversion.

  • The superposing effect of SPCP(Surfoce Induced Plasma Chemical Process) and corona discharge has been studied for rerroval of NOx from industrial flue gases. NOx rermval rates by SPCP, corona discharge and superposing discharge were monitored and compared. Parameters were the concentration and the flow rate of gas, frequency and the type of discharge. Experirrental results showed that NOx removal rate by sUIffPOSing discharge was 10-15[%] higher than that by the other two modes. The higher NOx. rermval rate was observed with the lower frequency of upper electrode in the combined reactor and with the higher frequency of lower electrode. 'The maximum obtainable NOx. rerroval rate by SPCP (18 [W]) and corona discharge (8.5 [W]) was 80[%] and 10[%], respectively. With the combination of the two modes, however, 90[%] of NOx removal rate was observed with the discharge power of 14 [W].14 [W].

  • The combustion temperature was controlled between $880^{\circ}C$ to $1070^{\circ}C$ to find the relation the combustion temperature and emission amount of PCDDs/PCDFs in the Municipal solid waste incinerator. The emission amount of PCDDs/PCDFs decreased when the temperature increased in the rear of the boiler. The PCDDs/PCDFs concentration were detected $7.82ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ at $880^{\circ}C$, $6.97ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ at $970^{\circ}C$ and $6.13ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ at $1070^{\circ}C$. Also, The chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes, and PCB concentration decreased by increasing the temperature from $880^{\circ}C$ to at $1070^{\circ}C$, and the isomer of the prescsors had a tendency to emit the higbly cbiorinated compounds.

  • The total PCBs level in the transformer insulation oil samples using GC/ECD and HRGC/HRMS were ranged from 0.087 to $223.6{\mu}g/g$ and ranged from N.D. to $154.04{\mu}g/g$, respectively. The calculated TEQ values were ranged from 0.00067 to 6.8 ng WHO-TEQ/g. Among the samples, 6 samples showed higher than 2 ppm concentration (specific waste criterion of Korea). A variety in the concentration of total PCBs were observed between ECD and HRMS analysis. This is maybe due to quantification mehtod. The Aroclor 1248 wasn't present in the samples. The distribution pattern of Co-PCB congeners showed that the ratio of monoortho substituted congeners were higher than non-ortho substituted congeners. Among that, PCB-167 congener was predominant. In addition, the distribution of Co-PCBs congeners was different with that of flue gas and ambient air samples as well as commercial PCB formulations (Aroclor, Kanechlor).

  • Carbon dioxide, included in the flue gas from the combustion of fossil fuel, was known as a representative green house gas and various removal and utilization technologies of it has been studied for the prevention of global warming. This study was performed as an effort to find out a method to reuse carbon dioxide separated from flue gas by magnetite powder. Magnetite powder was synthesized using various oxidizers and alkalinity controlled aqueous solutions of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ and NaOH at 50, 80, 90, $100^{\circ}C$ and analyzed by XRD and SEM. The analysis results showed that magnetite powder synthesized at higher alkalinity and temperature had crystalline spinel and cubic structure. The reduction by hydrogen and the oxidation by carbon dioxide of synthesized powder were studied by TGA. The results showed that magnetite powder synthesized at low alkalinity and temperature was non-cubical amorphous but crystalline and cubical at high alkalinity and temperature. Comparing magnetite powders synthesized using oxidants(air and oxygen) and nitrogen, magnetite powder using more oxygen containing oxidant synthesized more crystalline magnetite powder. The experimental results of redox reaction of the synthesized magnetite powder showed that the reduction by hydrogen and the oxidation by carbon dioxide were seldom observed below $400^{\circ}C$ and observed well at $500^{\circ}C$. Magnetite powder synthesized at $100^{\circ}C$ and alkalinity(molal concentration ratio of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ to NaOH) of 2.0 using $O_2$ showed the highest reduction of 27.15 wt% and oxidation of 26.73 wt%, especially at reaction temperature of $500^{\circ}C$.
