  • Our research objectives are to determine under what conditions microalgal-based $CO_2$capture from flue gases is economically attractive. Specifically, our objective here was to select microalgae that are temperature, pH and flue gas tolerant. Microalgae were grown under five different temperatures, three different pH and five different flue gas mixtures besides 100% $CO_2$(gas concentrations that the cells were exposed to ranged 5.7-100% $CO_2$, 0-3504ppm SO$_2$, 0-328ppm NO, and 0-126ppm NO$_2$). Our results indicate that the microalgal strains tested exhibit a substantial ability to withstand a wide range of temperature (54 strains tested), pH (20 strains tested) and flue gas composition (24 strains tested) likely to be encountered in cultures used for carbon sequestration from smoke stack gases. Our results indicate that microalgal photosynthesis is a limited but viable strategy for $CO_2$capture from flue gases produced by stationary combustion sources.

  • Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is a method widely adopted to control NOx in combustion system. The recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance a much improved reduction in NOx per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to the conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of FGR/FIR methods on NOx reduction in turbulent swirl flames by using N$_2$ and CO$_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Results show that CO$_2$ dilution is more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of CO$_2$ compared to N$_2$ and FIR is more effective to reduce NO emission than FGR when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas is used.

  • Effects of various reaction factors such as pressure, time, and temperature on clathrate formation were investigated for hydroquinone with $CO_2$ and $N_2$. Experimental and spectroscopic results indicate that $CO_2$ plays more preferential role in forming hydroquinone clathrates than $N_2$. These results can be used in application of selective $CO_2$ separation from flue gases with the formation of clathrate compounds.

  • An investigation has been made of the various plasma chemistry reactions that occur in the corona discharge of an electrostatic precipitator operating in a typical flue gas. As the results of investigation, sulphur dioxide is removed principally by reactions with OH radicals to produce sulphuric acid, while nitrogen oxides are removed principally by reduction via the N radical to molecular nitrogen. If electrostatic precipitator\ulcorner used for flue gases are operated with positive voltages instead of negative dc voltages, there are significant reductions in the emission of the undesirable gases SO$_2$, NO, and NO$_2$. Thus, in this paper we design the bidirectional pulse generator for removal of flue gas, where the pulse width is more than 50[nsec] and the maximum output voltage is more than 100[kVl.

  • Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is a method used to control oxides of nitrogen ($NO_x$) in combustion system. The recirculated flue gases resulted in slow reaction and low flame temperatures, which in turn resulted in decreased thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that introducing the recirculated flue gas in the fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), resulted in a much greater reduction in $NO_x$ per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to introducing the flue gases in air. In the present study, the effect on $NO_x$ reduction in turbulent swirl flame in laboratory scale using FGR/FIR methods through the dilution using $N_2$ and $CO_2$. Results. show the $CO_2$ dilution is more effective $NO_x$ reduction methods because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. FIR is more effective to reduce $NO_x$ emission than FGR when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas.

  • Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is widely adopted to control NO emission in combustion systems. Recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance much improved reduction in NO per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of dilution methods in air and fuel sides on NO reduction has been investigated numerically by using $N_2$ and $CO_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Counterflow diffusion flames were studied in conjunction with the laminar flamelet model of turbulent flames. Results showed that $CO_2$ dilution was more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. Fuel dilution was more effective in reducing NO emission than air dilution when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas was used by the increase in the nozzle exit velocity, thereby the stretch rate, with dilution gas added to fuel side.

  • In this study an experimental investigation has been conducted to remove NOx and SO$_2$simultaneously from a combustion flue gases were consisted of NO-SO$_2$-$CO_2$-$N_2$-O$_2$([NO]o:200ppm and [SO$_2$]o:800ppm) and the injection gases used as radical source gases were NH$_3$-Ar-air and CH$_4$-Ar-air. NOx and SO$_2$removal efficiency and the other by-products were measured by Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR) as well as SO$_2$, NOx and NO$_2$gas detectors. and SEM images after sampling. The results showed that a significant Nucleating Particle Counter(CNPC) and SEM images after sampling. The results showed that a significant aerosol particle formation was observed during a simultaneous NOx and SO$_2$removal operation in corona radical shower systems. The diameter of aerosol particles was in the range of 0.18 to 3.6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a maximum fraction of particles at particles diameter of 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The NOx removal efficiency significantly increased with increasing applied voltage and NH$_3$molecule ratio. The SO$_2$removal efficiency was not significantly effected by applied voltage and slightly increased with increasing NH$_3$molecule ratio. It could be found that it is possible to use CH$_4$for NOx and SO$_2$removal by corona radical shower systems.

  • Co-combustion of sludge with coal is proposed as an alternative option for sludge disposal instead of ocean dumping. Because the combustion of sludge can cause emissions of various air pollutants, it is important to understand the characteristics of sludge combustion flue gases. Especially, very few studies are found to investigate mercury emissions from the co-combustion of sludge with coal. In this study, coal and sludge samples were prepared with different mixing ratios. These samples were combusted in a bench-scale combustor, and their flue gases were analyzed. Due to higher mercury content in the sludge sample, higher mercury emissions were found with an increase in a ratio of sludge to coal. Compared to the combustion flue gas of the coal sample, higher levels of mercury oxidation were found in the combustion flue gas of the samples including sludge.

  • In order to suggest an efficient catalyst systems for NOx reduction of flue gases from industrial boilers, $TiO_2$ supported $WO_3-V_2O_5, V_2O_5$ and $WS_2$ catalysts were tested for the performances of NOx reduction at high reactin temperature range (250-500$^\circ$C) using a simulated flue gas system. It was found that while the proposed $WO_3/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts showed a significant high NOx reduction efficiency at about 350-400$^\circ$C, the conventional commercial catalyst of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ showed a significant drop in NOx reduction efficiency due to the excessive $NH_3$ oxidation. From the measurement of surface acidities of those catalysts, it was found that the acidity are well correlated with the activities of NOx reduction. The reason of high activity of $WO_3$ series catalysts at high reaction temperature seems due to the low value of surface excess oxygen compared with that of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ seems equivalent to the acid site of that catalyst.

  • A simulation program using the mass transfer correlation was constructed to analyze 1-D simplified condensing flow across the tube bank. Higher efficiency was anticipated by reducing the flue gas temperature down below the dew point where the water vapor in the flue gas is condensed at the surface of the heat exchanger; that is, the heat transfer by the latent heat is added to that by the sensible heat. Thus, there can be an optimum operating condition to maximize the heat recovery from the flue gas. The temperature rises of the flue gas and the cooling water between the inlet and the outlet of the tube bank were compared with the experimental data reported previously. The predicted results agree well with the experimental data. Using this simulation program, the parametric studies have been conducted fur various operating conditions, such as the velocities and temperatures of the vapor/gas mixture and the cooling water, the number of the rows, and the conductivity of the wall material.
