The trend of international concerns on environmental conservation and domestic demand of ambient air quality improvement, specially on sulfur dioxide level has resulted in the establishment of mid-term strategy of environmental improvement and stepwise strengthening of emission regulations in this decade in Korea. Development of flue gas desulfurization(FGD) process is becoming an essential task to be accomplished especially for the power plants and large industrial facilities. This study is an initial stage researc focusing on the mass transfer principles in wet type FGD process and the effects of operating variables of a jet bubbling scrubber utilizing limestone slurry on sulfur dioxide removal efficiency. Experimental results showed this type of scrubbing system has some advantages in terms of mass transfer mechanism and removal efficiency. More rigorous research is needed for the reaction system and the comparison with existing FGD processess for the possible development of a process which is compatative in view of installation cost and treatment of by-products.

The effect of limestone characteristics on in-furnace desulfurization was experimentally investigated at hot gas combustion condition in a drop tube furnace (DTF). Flue gas was measured by Gas analyzer in order to figure out $SO_2$ content. The experiments were performed under excess sulfur 3000ppm condition to examine the effect of operating variables such as reaction temperatures, Ca/S ratios on the $SO_2$ removal efficiencies. The results show that the $SO_2$ removal efficiency increased with reaction temperature and Ca/S ratio increase. When considering the economics, $1200^{\circ}C$ and Ca/S ratio 2 condition is optimized to reduce $SO_2$ emission.
The geometry of popular wave plate type mist eliminator for the wet flue gas desulfurization process was improved, fabricated, and experimentally evaluated. A Mist eliminator is a type of inertial particle collector which collection efficiency is proportional to the velocity of the gas phase. However, as the amount of re-entrainment is also proportional to the gas phase velocity, there is a limitation for the gas phase flow rate. Re-entrainment is one of the most important issues in a mist eliminator and is likely to occur as the input of the liquid phase and flow rate of the gas phase increase. In order to resolve this problem, the projection angle of the improved mist eliminator is set to 30° from the conventional one while maintaining the cross-section. With low flow rate conditions, the modified mist eliminator showed a similar pressure drop and overall collection efficiency. However, with conditions in which re-entrainment is obviously occurring, the modified mist eliminator showed better performance in draining droplets than the conventional one. As a result, the modified mist eliminator showed higher overall collection efficiency.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect on denuclearization and decertification of flue gas by utilizing Mg( OH)$_{2}$ and NaOH as reagents in industrial boiler. We used packed absorber with Tellerette in all cases. And pH of circulation solution, rate of liquid per gas in absorber, COD concentration by pH variation in oxidation basin were inves- tigated. The following conclusions were obtained from experimental results: 1. Concerning running cost for reagents, Mg( OH)$_{2}$ reagent for treatment of flue gas was more economical than NaOH. 2. While Mg( OH )$_{2}$ and NaOH as absorbents were used, then the ratio of denuclearization was 96 and 97% respectively and nitrification was recorded 29 and 25% . 3. In this absorption tests the optimum condition for ratio of liquid per gas, pH and nonregenerable salt concentration of circulation solution were 3.6ℓ /Nm$^{3}$, 6.0, 0.5∼1.0% respectively, 4. Initial COD in oxidation basin was 800 ∼ 1,00099ut after adjusting to pH 7.0, COD of effluent water was less than 20ppm.

The flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process is currently the most effective process utilized to remove sulfur dioxide from stack gases of coal-fired plants. However, FGD systems use a lot of limestone as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use limestone sludge, which is a by-product of the steel industry, to replace the desulfurizing agent of the FGD system. The limestone particle size is found to be unrelated to the desulfurizing rate; the gypsum purity, however, is related. Limestone sludge mixes with limestone slurry delivered at a constant rate in a desulfurizing agent with organic acid are expected to lead to a high desulfurization efficiency and high quality by-product (gypsum).

It studies that effect of limestone of physicochemical characteristic on the performance of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and application examination for technology of wet type FGD process and to utilize the limestone in Donghae-Samcheok. The experiment method was measured total neutralizing capability (TNC) using the lab scale experimental apparatus based on the HCl titration test. The results of TNC of limestone samples were more dependent on the physical characteristics including particle size rather than chemical compositions such as CaO content and particle size of limestone get smaller, TNC is increased.
Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is an effective technique to remove $SO_2$ gases of coal-fired plants. Limestone is usually used as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD process. Physical and chemical characteristics analysis of desulfurizing agent was conducted. Desulfurizing agent using limestone sludge was fabricated by pre-treatment process and, then the agent was used on FGD process. Consequently, the tendency on the $SO_2$ concentration did not appear. And limestone sludge was considered as possible alternative agent for flue gas desulfurization process through absorber control system.
Some sections of the exhaust system to determine the shape of the duct is to suffer the difficulties by space constraints to install new equipment of the environment post-treatment for existing operation of the power plants. In this paper the large duct in flue gas desulfurization equipments of the 500MW coal-fired power plant on the current operation is numerically analyzed from induced draft fan exit to booster up fan inlet section which is in the narrow space of the exhaust system with four times bending and is connected to emergency duct to bypass the exhaust gas on the emergency operation. The procedure and method using computational fluid dynamics are proposed to maintain the stability of the guide vane with the uniform flow and a minimum pressure loss of exhaust gas in the case of normal and emergency operation between the direction of the flow of exhaust gas duct at different.
The effect of spray characteristics on desulfurization yield was evaluated by performing experiments with pilot spray drying sorber (SDS). Among the variables of operating conditions, the slurry-spraying conditions were chosen as major parameters; Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of slurry droplet were varied for the different gas temperatures and $SO_{2}$ concentrations in the inlet gas flow. From the experimental results, we proposed semi-empirical models of desulfurization yield for both Stoichiometric ratio and Sauter mean diameter of droplets. The optimal condition of spray can be determined based on these results, which might be applied to the design or scale-up of SDS systems.
