  • In order to develop a high speed train, various conditions have been considered. Fatigue strength assessment by the fluctuation of pressure is an important one. When high speed train passing though tunnels, the pressure wave is generated in tunnels and pressure variation by the wave is acting on carbody structure with dynamic load repeatedly. In this study, formulation for reliability based fatigue assessment method has been performed when the high speed train passes through tunnels. The formulation was based on structural reliability index method and followed the proposed ISO method. The result by this study would be a good guidance to calculate the fatigue life and reliability index of body structure.

  • The yield strengths of austenitic stainless steel have been approximately doubled by increasing the nitrogen content. But, the increasing the nitrogen cause of increase the pressure of metal vapor inside the keyhole in electron beam welding. During welding, eruptions of keyhole often occur that cause excessive spatter, concavity, and porocity in the weld zone. Additionally the fast evaporation of nitrogen content cause of decrease the strength of weld zone. Therefore in this paper, we investigated of the weldability of electron beam welding and the change of chemical content after welding for strengthened austenitic stainless steel, measured the deformation scale of both of electron beam and narrow gap TIG and the spike fluctuation in the root.

  • In this paper, we consider the problem of estimation of average radar cross section (RCS) for Swerling 1 fluctuation model, based on the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation method. In a mathematical development we take into account the event that target strength is lower than detection threshold, or the target is not detected. Our ML estimation for the SWR uses the score function that is the joint probability-pdf of the events and random variables. The solution to the ML estimation reduces to an expression in the from of a contraction mapping. The computational efficiency of the contraction mapping theorem is significant in computing the ML estimation as compared with other root-finding algorithms fur most radar tracking conditions.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the psychoacoustic properties of PTFE(Poly tetra Fluoroethylene) laminated vapor permeable water repellent fabrics which are frequently used for sportswear, to examine the relationship among fabrics' basic characteristics, mechanical properties and the psychoacoustic properties, and finally to propose the predicting model to minimize the psychoacoustic fabric sound. A total of 8 specimens' frictional sound were recorded and Zwicker's psychoacoustic parameters such as loudness(Z), sharpness(Z), roughness(Z), and fluctuation strength(Z) were calculated using the Sound Quality Program. Mechanical properties of specimens were measured by KES-FB system. Loudness(Z) of specimen D-1 was the highest, which means the rustling sound of the specimen D-1 was the most noisy. Statistically significant difference among film type was observed only in loudness(Z) for fabric sound. Based on ANOVA and post-hoc test, specimens were classified into less loud PTFE film group (groupI) and loud PTFE film group (groupII). Loudness(Z) was higher when staple yarn was used compared when filament yarn was used. According to the correlation between the mechanical properties of fabrics and loudness(Z) in groupI, the shear properties, compression properties and weight showed positive correlation with loudness(Z). According to the regression equation predicting loudness(Z) of groupI, the layer variable was chosen. In groupII, variables explaining the loudness(Z) were yarn types and shear hysteresis(2HG5).

  • In construction site, there are some occasions where concrete under initial curing is being affected by nitration from nearby vibration sources. To study these effects, in this paper, strength characteristics of concrete specimens subjected to continuous vibration up to 12 hours in vertical direction after concrete placement were observed. And through the vibration time control experiment where a number of time combinations consisted of times before and after applying vibration during initial curing period were used as experimental parameters, possibility of concrete strength improvement was investigated. From the experimental results, it could be seen that the concrete strengths were mostly decreased due to the increase of vibration velocity during initial curing period. But fluctuation ratio of concrete strength did not have any close correlations with the vibration times. And results of vibration time control experiment showed that if times before applying vibration sustains at least more than 3 hours, subsequent vibrations after that hours do not affect the concrete strength in any unfavorable ways.

  • Laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the cone factors for the layers with low plasticity containing a lot of silty and sand soils from the west coast (Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan areas) and its applicability was evaluated based on these results. The cone factors were evaluated from 19 to 23 based on unconfined compression strengths (qu), from 13 to 13.8 based on simple CU strengths and from 11.6 to 13.1 based on field vane strengths, respectively. The unconfined compression strengths of undisturbed silty soil samples with low plasticity were considerably underestimated due to the change of in-situ residual effective stress during sampling. Half of unconfined compression strength (qu/2) based cone factors of silty soils with low plasticity fluctuated and were approximately 1.8 times higher than simple CU based values of these soils. When evaluating cone factors of these soils, it should be judged overall on the physical properties such as the grain size distribution and soil plasticity and on the fluctuation of the corrected cone resistance and the sleeve friction due to the distribution of sandseam in the ground including pore pressure parameter.

  • The present USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) node deployment practices have many limitations in terms of positional connectivity. The aim of this research was to minimize a redundancy of USN route nodes, by integrating spatially weighted parameters such as visibility, proximity to cell center, road density, building density and cell overlapping ratio into a comprehensive GIS database. This spatially weighted approach made it possible to reduce the number of route nodes (11) required in the study site as compared to that of the grid network method (24). The field test for RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) indicates that the spatially weighted deployment could comply with the quality assurance standard for node connectivity, and that reduced route nodes do not show a significant degree of signal fluctuation for different site conditions. This study demonstrated that the spatially weighted deployment can be used to minimize a redundancy of USN route nodes in a routine manner, and the quantitative evidence removing a redundancy of USN route nodes could be utilized as major tools to ensure the strong signal in the USN, that is frequently encountered in real applications.

  • This paper presents the changes of acoustic scattering pattern from a single cylinder and two identical cylinders in both theoretical calculations and experimental measurements. Bi-static scattering pattern by single cylinder and two parallel cylinders (length 2m, radius 30mm) was measured in $5m\times5m\times5m$ water tank using high frequency projector (120 kHz) and hydrophone. The results show similar agreement between experiment and theory. In case of single cylinder scattering. omni-directional pattern was observed in backward but there are fluctuations or target strength in forward. Interference between each cylinder's scattering fields produce fluctuations of target strength in all directions of two cylinders.

  • In this paper, we investigate the statistical correlation of the time series for temperature measured at the heat box in the automobile drying process. We show, in terms of the sample variance, that a significant non-linear correlation exists in the time series that consist of absolute temperature changes. To investigate further the non-linear correlation, we utilize the volatility, an important concept in the financial market, and induce volatility time series from absolute temperature changes. We analyze the time series of volatilities in terms of the de-trended fluctuation analysis (DFA), a method especially suitable for testing the long-range correlation of non-stationary data, from the correlation perspective. We uncover that the volatility exhibits a long-range correlation regardless of the window size. We also analyze the cross correlation between two (inlet and outlet) volatility time series to characterize any correlation between the two, and disclose the dependence of the correlation strength on the time lag. These results can contribute as important factors to the modeling of forecasting and management of the heat box's temperature.
