The flow characteristics on a supersonic inlet with bleeding system by changing angles of attack and channel length conditions are studied by computational 3D turbulent flow analysis. A compressible upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method with $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model is used to analysis the inlet flowfield. More non-uniform flowfields are shown at the AIP when angle of attack becomes bigger and bigger. These non-uniform flowfield works the performance aggravating factors of the supersonic engine. Non-uniform flowfield by changing channel length at the various angle of attack are investigated.

The flowfield generated by a 2-D rotating cylinder on a plane moving at freestream velocity was experimentally investigated in a wind tunnel to simulate aerodynamic characteristics of rotating wheels of an automobile. In the flowfield around a rotating cylinder at 3*10$^{3}$ < Re$_{d}$<8*10$^{3}$, unique mean flow and turbulence characteristics were confirmed by hot-wire measurements as well as frequency analysis, which was supported by flow visualization. In the vicinity of a rotating cylinder, a unique turbulence structure on .root.over bar u'$^{2}$ profiles was formed in hump-like shape at 1 < y/d < 3. A peak frequency which characterized the effect of a rotating cylinder had the same value of the rotation rate of a cylinder. In case of cylinder rotation, the depths of mean velocity -defect and turbulent-shear regions were thickened by 20-40% at 0 < x/d < 10 compared with the case of cylinder stationary. Far downstream beyond x/d > 10, the flowfield generated by a rotating cylinder showed self-similarity in the profiles of mean velocity and turbulence quantities. The effect of a rotating cylinder was independent of its rotation rate and Reynolds number in the measurement range.
Thermal flowfield of a micro turbojet engine was computationally investigated for exhaust nozzles with different aspect ratio and curvature. Special attention was paid to maximum and average temperature of the nozzle surface and the exhaust nozzle plume. The IR signatures of the micro turbojet engine nozzle were then calculated through the narrow-band model based on thermal flowfield data obtained through CFD analysis. Finally, in order to check the similarity of thermal flowfields and IR signature of the sub-scale micro turbojet engine model and the full-scale UCAV propulsion system, several non-dimensional parameters associated with temperature and optical property of plume were introduced. It was shown that, in spite of some differences in actual values of non-dimensional parameters, the scaling characteristics on spectral feature of IR signature and effects of aspect ratio and curvature of nozzle configuration remain similar in sub-scale and full-scale cases.

The effects of vortex generators, in the form of small delta-shaped tabs or thin tapes at an axi-symmetric supersonic nozzle exit, on the characteristics of supersonic jet flowfields are investigated by Schlieren images and Pitot-tube measurements. Small tabs as small as 1 % of the nozzle exit area can introduce streamwise vortices and produce a significant effect on the jet flowfield downstream of the nozzle. The effect is stronger for the cases of under-expanded jet than over- and perfect-expanded cases, introducing a larger flow entrainment. The effects of the angle of tabs with respect to the flow direction are also investigated, and for over-expanded jet cases, it is found that the tabs bended toward upstream can weaken the interaction strength and remove the Mach disc in the jet flowfield. Introduction of small proturbances inside the nozzle surface by attachment of thin tapes is also found to change the pressure distribution in the circumferential direction of the flowfield. Its effect is also found to be dependent on the jet expansion ratio.

Experimental investigations on the flow characteristics of downstream region of a butterfly valve, which is used in SI engine, have been conducted according to Reynolds number and valve angle. Measurement programs of the flowfield using x-type of hotwire anemometry include the mean and fluctuating velocity, turbulnet intensity, shear stress, power spectrum and pressure loss coefficient. Experimental results show that flow characteristics and independent of relatively high Reynolds number; 60,000 and 80,000. It is also seen that streamwise mean velocities have relatively large velocity gradient around the butterfly valve with increasing the valve opening angle and this trend appears even in the far downstream region. The distributions of turbulent intensity and shear stress show irregular behavior regardless of the valve opening angle and those of the case of the valve opening angle of 45°are the largest. The pressure loss coefficient of the body surface of the throttle valve increases mildly with the increase of Reynolds number and increases rapidly with the reduction of the valve opening angle.

Automobile sunroof buffeting is the tonal noise of low frequency around 20Hz. It occurs due to the acoustic feedback process between the shear layer detached from the leading edge of sunroof opening and the Helmholtz resonator-like property of a car cabin. In this paper, PIV visualization technique is applied to the unsteady flow field around sunroof opening of an SUV in the full-scale automotive wind tunnel in order to find out buffeting mechanism. A phase-marking PIV measurement method, in which image and sound pressure are recorded simultaneously, and a phase-rearrangement post-processing program were developed for capturing noise-related velocity fields without expensive synchronization systems. Through this study, some characteristics of the real-car sunroof shear layers under various deflector conditions were identified and these results can provide insights into the noise reduction mechanism of the tube-type deflector.
The numerical simulations of flowfield and pollutant dispersion over two-dimensional hills of various shapes are described. The Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations and concentration diffusion equation based on the gradient diffusion theory have been applied to the atmospheric shear flow over the bell-shaped hills which are basic components of the complex terrain. The flow characteristics such as velocity profiles of the geophysical boundary layer, speed-up phenomena, mean pollutant concentration profiles are compared with experimental data to validate the present numerical procedure and it has been found that the present numerical results agree well with experiments and other numerical data. It has been also found that the distributions of ground level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and height.
The characteristics of compressible flow are different from those of incompressible flow from the mathematical and physical point of view. Therefore, the way to solve the flowfield is different between compressible flow and incompressible flow. In general, density-based numerical algorithm is mainly used for compressible flow solver development. On the other hand, incompressible flow solver prefers to use pressure-based numerical algorithm. In this research, a compressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed by means of extending from pressure-based incompressible numerical algorithm to handle both compressible and incompressible flows using the same flow solver. The present flow solver is tested at various speed ranges and compared with the solutions of density-based compressible flow solver. Numerical results show a good agreement between two flow solvers.
Numerical analysis of the flowfield around a 50-meter class airship is performed to determine the optimal position for the airspeed probe installation. The turbulent flow around the hull with gondola is analyzed to examine the characteristics of the data measured by the probe attached to the gondola, and they turned out to show the nonlinear relation between the freestream and measured angles of attack and be influenced by the Reynolds number. New position of the hull nose was proposed and the effect of various factors on the flowfield around the nose was also examined. The analysis with a panel method showed that the effect of empennage was negligible, and the effect of gondola and boundary layer thickness had also little impact. It was shown that the freestream angle of attack would be the only independent variable for the probe position around the hull nose in constructing the calibration matrix.
