  • Recently, the Internet-based communication method has been adopted as an open networking solution in the field of remote control and data acquisition. In the current Internet, most networking applications are developed according to the client-server approach. In this paper, we propose an innovative Device Configuration Protocol (DCP) that exchanges the traditional role between client and server to provide a uniform device interface over the Internet for various field devices. The proposed protocol is implemented as an application-level protocol running on top of the standard TCP/IP protocols. Also, the DCP protocol is extended with real-time processing to work with the FlowLabel of IPv6 for QoS (Quality of Service) support. The simulation results show that the real-time packets can be processed prior to the given deadline regardless of throughput, as compared to the normal packets.

  • This study investigates the effects of OSRVM mounting location and its configurations such as stalk height and housing height on the aerodynamic performance of the passenger car. In order to validate the flow solver, FLUENT which is very well known commercial code, the flow field around an Ahmed Body was analyzed numerically and compared with the experimental data. The predicted aerodynamic performance and flow patterns around a car show good agreements with the experimental data. Mounting location and stalk height should be designed while OSRVM is mounted on the car to evaluate the aerodynamic performance precisely. Housing height, however, may be designed independent of the car because the aerodynamic interference between housing height and car configuration is negligible.

  • The characteristics of laminar free jet flow with having applied AC electric fields have been investigated experimentally. A single electrode configuration was adopted such that electric fields were applied directly to nozzle and thus the surrounding could be an infinite ground. The experimental results showed that the jet flow with AC was modified significantly. At a certain axial distance, the laminar fuel stem was broken down and subsequently it was separated into three parts when AC electric fields were applied over a certain voltage in a range of frequencies less than 120 Hz. The breakdown point was measured by varying applied AC voltage and frequency. The effect of applying electric fields to jet flow was discussed in detail.

  • The KSR-III Main Propulsion System configuration of the liquid oxygen (LOX) feed line is analyzed. This feed line includes a tighter radius and cavitation venturi for flow mass flow-rate passive control. There were concerns that these configurations might generate a great flow distortion at the engine interface. Also both the pressure drop at the feed line and any presence of separation area are a great concern according to the propellant flow. To resolve these issues, a computational fluid dynamic analysis was conducted to determine the flow field in the LOX feed lines.

  • The flow field in a cylinder of a 4-valve pentroof engine is studied using the KIVA-3V code. Turbulence is generated from the jet flow through valves and broken down to the small scale eddies in the compression process. It is known that the tumble effectively keeps turbulence during the compression process. In the combustion process, turbulence is known to enhance flame speed by increasing mass, momentum and heat transfer rates. The effects of the intake port angles on the flow and combustion characteristics are studied in this study. To study the effect of turbulence on the combustion process, Cantore combustion model is applied in this study.

  • The configuration of coaxial co-rotating contained in shroud provides a useful model for investigating the characteristics of flow in the HDD. Reynolds number is defined as $Re_R={\Omega}{R_o}^2/{\upsilon},\;Re_H={\Omega}R_oH/{\upsilon}$ in present study. An experimental investigation was performed for turbulence profiles and PSD distribution and vortices frequency behavior for various range of $Re_R=2.43{\times}10^4{\sim}3.61{\times}10^5$. A laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) is used to obtain the velocity field of unobstructed co-rotating disks flow. Airflow pattern visualization between inner and outer region was compared with turbulence profiles measured from LDA. Outer detached shear layer and dead-zone without oscillating velocity fluctuation to circumferential mean were quantitively traced.

  • The failure of a subsea production plant could induce fatal hazards and enormous loss to human lives, environments, and properties. Thus, for securing integrated design safety, core source technologies include subsea system integration that has high safety and reliability and a technique for the subsea flow assurance of subsea production plant and subsea pipeline network fluids. The evaluation of subsea flow assurance needs to be performed considering the performance of a subsea production plant, reservoir production characteristics, and the flow characteristics of multiphase fluids. A subsea production plant is installed in the deep sea, and thus is exposed to a high-pressure/ low-temperature environment. Accordingly, hydrates could be formed inside a subsea production plant or within a subsea pipeline network. These hydrates could induce serious damages by blocking the flow of subsea fluids. In this study, a simulation technology, which can visualize the system configuration of subsea production processes and can simulate stable flow of fluids, was introduced. Most existing subsea simulations have performed the analysis of dynamic behaviors for the installation of subsea facilities or the flow analysis of multiphase flow within pipes. The above studies occupy extensive research areas of the subsea field. In this study, with the goal of simulating the configuration of an entire deep sea production system compared to existing studies, a DES-based simulation technology, which can logically simulate oil production processes in the deep sea, was analyzed, and an implementation example of a simplified case was introduced.

  • Direct Numerical Simulation was carried out to predict mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating stepped cylinder. This investigation is a follow-up study of Nesic et al. [Corrosion, Vol. 56, No. 10, pp. 1005 - 1014] The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to design a simple device which can generate flows of high turbulence intensity at low cost for corrosion researchers. Two cases were considered; Sc=1 and 10 both at Re=335. Here, Sc and Re stand for Schmidt number and Reynolds number, respectively, based on the step height and the surface speed of the cylinder upstream the step. Main focus was placed on the correlation between turbulent fluctuation and concentration field. The spatio-temporal evolution of concentration field is discussed. The numerical results are qualitatively compared with those of the experiment conducted with the same flow configuration.

  • Performance of PEMFC is affected by many factors such as that of MEA, configuration of flow field, operating conditions, humidification, cooling and so on. In this study, in order to improve the performance of fuel cell, a small area fuel cell stack was made and its performance was tested under various operating conditions. Stack consists of 3 single PEM fuel cells. Channel is serpentine type and the active area of the electrode is $50cm^2$. The test results show that the peak power is 60W at $70^\circ{C}$ of stack temperature with humidification condition.

  • In this study a microchannel with various arrangement of blocks is newly proposed. This design comprises periodically arranged simple blocks. In this configuration, the stirring is greatly enhanced at a certain geometric parameter set. To characterize the flow field and the stirring effect both the numerical and experimental methods were employed. To obtain the velocity field, three-dimensional numerical computation to the Navier Stokes equations are performed by using a commercial code, FLUENT 6.0. The fluid-flow solutions are then cast into studying the characteristics of stirring with the aid of Lyapunov exponent. The numerical results show that the particles' trajectories in the microchannel heavily depend on the block arrangement. It was shown that the stirring is significantly enhanced at larger block-height and it reaches maximum when the height is 0.8 times the channel width. We also studied the effect of the block stagger angle, and it turns out that the stirring performance is the best at the block angel ${45^\circ}$.
