  • Investigation and analysis of the debris flow characteristics such as basin topography, geologic conditions of initiation location and triggering rainfall are required to systematically mitigate debris flow hazard. In this paper, 48 debris flows which had caused some damages to the highway in the past 5 years are investigated and their characteristics of basic topography and triggering rainfall are analyzed. Debris flows are found to occur in small basins having the area of $0.01{\sim}0.65km^2$ range and mostly initiated by the surficial failure of natural slope having the inclination of 29~55 degree during the intense rainfall. As for the triggering rainfall, rainfall of 2 to 5 year recurrence frequency are found to be able to trigger the debris flow and magnitude of debris flow in a basin could depend on the rainfall intensity and cumulative amount.

  • Background : The level of imposed work of breathing (WOB) is important for patient-ventilator synchrony and during weaning from mechanical ventilation. Triggering methods and the sensitivity of demand system are important determining factors of the imposed WOB. Flow triggering method is available on several modern ventilator and is believed to impose less work to a patient-triggered breath than pressure triggering method. We intended to compare the level of imposed WOB on two different methods of triggering and also at different levels of sensitivities on each triggering method (0.7 L/min vs 2.0 L/min on flow triggering ; $-1\;cmH_2O$ vs $-2cm\;H_2O$ on pressure triggering). Methods : The subjects were 12 patients ($64.8{\pm}4.2\;yrs$) on mechanical ventilation and were stable in respiratory pattern on CPAP $3\;cmH_2O$. Four different triggering sensitivities were applied at random order. For determination of imposed WOB, tracheal end pressure was measured through the monitoring lumen of Hi-Lo Jet tracheal tube (Mallincrodt, New York, USA) using pneumotachograph/pressure transducer (CP-100 pulmonary monitor, Bicore, Irvine, CA, USA). Other data of respiratory mechanics were also obtained by CP-100 pulmonary monitor. Results : The imposed WOB was decreased by 37.5% during 0.7 L/min on flow triggering compared to $-2\;cmH_2O$ on pressure triggering and also decreased by 14% during $-1\;cmH_2O$ compared to $-2\;cmH_2O$ on pressure triggering (p < 0.05 in each). The PTP(Pressure Time Product) was also decreased significantly during 0.7 L/min on flow triggering and $-1\;cmH_2O$ on pressure triggering compared to $-2\;cmH_2O$ on pressure triggering (p < 0.05 in each). The proportions of imposed WOB in total WOB were ranged from 37% to 85% and no significant changes among different methods and sensitivities. The physiologic WOB showed no significant changes among different triggering methods and sensitivities. Conclusion : To reduce the imposed WOB, flow triggering with sensitivity of 0.7 L/min would be better method than pressure triggering with sensitivity of $-2\;cm\;H_2O$.

  • In this study, the behavior characteristics and triggering rainfall of debris flow were investigated on the basis of DB constructed by performing field investigation and collecting the rainfall data at the sites where debris flow occurred around the west of Gangwon and adjacent areas during the last 10 years. For hill slope and channelized type of debris flow, its behavior characteristic was analyzed through runout channel of debris flow divided into zone of initiation, transportation and deposition and its magnitude was estimated by considering erosion at zones of initiation and transportation. Some considerations related to establishment of landslide forecasting criterion were raised by comparing the analyzed results of analysis of rainfall at the time of debris-flow occurrence with the previous researches about the triggering rainfall of debris flow. In addition, an ID curve of inducing debris flow adequate to the investigated site was proposed and compared with results of previous study.

  • Both the weighing bridge and the diverter system is a important component in achieving a high accuracy liquid flow rate standard using a static gravimetric method. The weighing bridge is a tank which weighing collected flow with a load cells. The diverter is a moving device used to direct flow alternately along its normal course(by pass) or towards the weighing tank. The time needed for collection into the weighing tank is measured using a timer. So it is important to the diversion period is sufficiently fast and triggering point of timer which is determined the filling time. On this studies show that the measurement deviation of load cell and uncertainty of diverter system for changing diversion speed and triggering point was estimated in accordance with Guide to The Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement(ISO).

  • In logistic environments, a process, in that it manages the flow of materials among partners, involves more than one organization. In this regard, a logistic process, as a combined process consisting of multiple sub processes, needs to be managed with controling interaction among partners. In achieving systematic management of a logistic process, traditional Business Process Management (BPM) cannot be used for the entire flow, since it lacks the ability to manage interactions among partners. Particularly in logistic environments where RFID technologies are used, how to deal with the connection between RFID event and logistic flow has not been properly addressed. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a new method of managing multi-organizational logistic processes based on RFID events. We define inter-workflow pattern, and suggest ECA(Event-Condition-Action) rules for auto triggering of logistic processes. To adjust the rules to RFID events, we invent RFID-based ECA rules using complex event. A prototype system has been developed for the purpose of demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach.

  • At present, there has been a wide range of studies on debris flow in Korea, more specifically, on rainfall characteristics that trigger debris flow including rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, and preceding rainfall. the prediction of landslide / debris flow relies on the criteria for landslide watch and warning by the Korea Forest Service (KFS, 2012). Despite this, it has been found that most incidents of debris flow were caused by rainfall above the level of landslide watch, maximum hourly rainfall, extensive damage was caused even under the watch level. Under these circumstances, we calculated a rainfall triggering index (RTI) using the main factors that trigger debris flow-rainfall, rainfall intensity, and cumulative rainfall-to design a more sophisticated watch / warning criteria than those by the KFS. The RTI was classified into attention, caution, alert, and evacuation, and was assessed through the application of two debris flow incidents that occurred in Umyeon Mountain, Seoul, and Cheongju, Inje, causing serious damage and casualties. Moreover, we reviewed the feasibility of the RTI by comparing it with the KFS's landslide watch / warning criteria (KFS, 2012).

  • In this study, triggering mechanism of ground sinking was analyzed through groundwater flow analysis on the basis of a case of the ground sinking occurred in Yongsan in 2015. The results of geotechnical investigation performed before and after the ground sinking were analyzed for the accurate understanding of geological features in the study area. The numerical groundwater flow analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of the flow behavior from the surrounding area toward the excavated site using software of Visual MODFLOW. As a result, it was found from the geotechnical analysis that the strata of sedimentary layer along the sunken area in the vertical direction was mixed significantly after the ground sinking compared with the status of the soil condition before the ground sinking. Piping was occurred at the toe of cut-off wall in the sandy gravel layer, and this phenomenon was predicted by the numerical flow analysis. Sequential ground displacement scenario of the ground sinking was derived from the geotechnical in situ test and numerical flow analysis performed in this study.

  • Most of slope failures have taken place between June and September in Korea, which cause a considerable damage to society. Rainfall intensity and duration are very significant triggering factors for landslide. In this paper, landslide-triggering rainfall threshold consisting of rainfall intensity-duration (I-D) was proposed. For this study, total 255 landslides were collected in landslide inventory during 1999 to 2012 from NDMI (National Disaster Management Institute), various reports, newspapers and field survey. And most of the required rainfall data were collected from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). The collected landslides were classified into three categories: debris flow, shallow landslide and unconfirmed. A rainfall threshold was proposed based on landslide type using statistical method such as quantile-regression method. Its validation was carried out based on 2013 landslide database. The proposed rainfall threshold was also compared with previous rainfall thresholds. The proposed landslide-triggering rainfall thresholds could be used in landslide early warning system in Korea.

  • Triggering rainfall and geologic conditions with the state of slope hazard were investigated based on the field investigation and collected data on the slope hazard during the period between 2011 and 2014 in Korea. Analysis results showed that most of slope hazards occurred in metamorphic rock and debris flow was the most frequent type of slope hazard. Slope hazard increased when the higher monthly mean rainfall was recorded. However, most of slope hazard occurred when certain time elapsed after the moment of maximum hourly rainfall. Finally, more than one month of long-term rainfall was shown to be related to the frequency of slope hazard in the period.
