Pitch precursors were synthesized from coal tar(CT) and pyrolysis fuel oil(PFO, petroleum residue oil) at relatively low temperature of $250^{\circ}$, in the presence of horontrifluorideidiethyletherate complex(BFDE) as a catalyst and nitrobenzene(NB) as a co-catalyst. The softening point, nitrogen content and carbon yield increased with an increase of concentration of NB. The pitch precursors with good spinnability were prepared by removing the volatile components through $N_2$ blowing. The precursor pitches were spun through a circular nozzle, stabilized at $310^{\circ}$ and finally carbonized at $1000^{\circ}$. The optically anisotropic structure formed at the absence of NB was changed into isotropic structure, showing a decrease in size of the flow domain. The hollow carbon fiber could be prepared in the process of stabilization. The results proposed that the morphology of carbon materials could be controlled by changing the concentration of catalyst and/or co-catalyst and/or stabilization condition that affect on the mobility of molecules during carbonization.

High temperature flow behaviors of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C tool steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests on a Gleeble simulator. The compressive test temperature was varied from 850 to $1,150^{\circ}C$ with the strain rate ranges of 0.05 and $10s^{-1}$. The maximum height reduction was 45%. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrhenius-typed equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was proposed to simulate the hot deformation behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was also developed to compare with the constitutive model. It was concluded that the ANN model showed more accurate prediction compared with the constitutive model for describing the hot compressive behavior of Fe-Cr-Mo-V-W-C steel.

Generally, ceramic material is very difficult to machine due to high strength and hardness. However, ceramic material can be machined at high temperature by plastic flow as metallic material due to the deterioration of the grain boundary glassy phase. Recently, a new method was developed to execute cutting process with CBN cutting tool by local heating of surface with laser. There are various parameters in LAM because it is a complex process with laser treatment and machining. During laser assisted machining, high power results in reducing of cutting force and increasing tool life, but excessive power brings oxidation of the surface. The effect of laser power, feed rate, cutting depth and etc. were investigated on the life of cutting tool. Chips were observed to find out suitable machining conditions. Chips of SSN had more flow-types than HIPSN. It means SSN is easier to machining. The life of cutting tool was increased with increasing laser power and decreasing feed rate and cutting depth.

Study on the Ti-6Al-4V have been carried out using cutting simulation, and researches for cutting force and chip shape prediction have been actively conducted under various conditions. However, a 3D printer application method using Ti-6Al-4V metal powder material as a high-power method has been studied for the purpose of prototyping, mold modification and product modification while lowering material removal rate. However, in the case of products / parts made of 3D printers using powder materials, problems may occur in the contact surface during tolerance management and assembly due to the degradation of the surface quality. As a result, even if a 3D printer is applied, post-processing through cutting is essential for surface quality improvement and tolerance management. In the cutting simulation, the cutting force and the chip shape were predicted based on the Johnson-Cook composition equation, but the shape of the shear type chip was not predictable. To solve this problem, we added a damaging term or strain softening term to the Johnson-Cook constitutive equation to predict chip shape. In this thesis, we applied the constant value of the S-K equations to the cutting simulation to predict the cutting force and compare with the experimental data to verify the validity of the cutting simulation and analyzed the machining characterization by considering conditions.
In order to understand the high temperature deformation behavior of superalloy 718, a rotating grade 718 alloy has been compression tested to about 0.7 upset ratio at $927{\sim}1066^{\circ}C$ temperature range and $5{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}5{\times}10^0sec^{-1}$ strain rate. The maximum flow stress was increased with increasing strain rate, and similar behavior was observed with decreasing temperature. At low temperature and high strain rates other than $5{\times}10^{-1}sec^{-1}$, strain softening was occurred mainly by dynamic recovery and deformation twinning processes, while at high temperature and low strain rates strain softening was offseted by dynamic recrystallization. At $5{\times}10^{-1}sec^{-1}$, strain hardening was occurred due to work hardening of the dynamic recrystallized grains. Strain rate sensitivity, m, was varied with strain rates. In the case of lower strain rate tests, m was measured as 0.3 and it was observed that the deformation was mainly controlled by dynamic recrystallization. At higher strain rate, m was lowered to 0.1 and the deformation was controlled by the dynamic recovery and the deformation twinning processes.
Abandoned mine deposits are exposed to various physico-chemical geo-environmental hazards and disasters, such as acid mine drainage, water contamination, erosion, and landslides. This paper presents the ring shear characteristics of waste materials. The ring shear box with a rotatable O-ring was used in this study. Three tests were performed: (i) Shear stress-time relationship for given normal stress and shear speed, (ii) shear stress as a function of shear speed, and (iii) shear stress as a function of normal stress. For a given normal stress (50 kPa) and speed (0.1 mm/sec), the materials tested exhibit a strain softening behavior, regardless of drainage condition. The peak and residual shear stresses were determined for each normal stress and shear speed. The shear stress was measured when shear speed is equal to 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 50, 100 mm/sec or when normal stress is equal to 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 150 kPa. From the test results, we found that the shear stress increases with increasing shear speed. The shear stress also increases with increasing normal stress. However, different types of shearing mode were observed in drained and undrained conditions. Under drained condition, particle crushing was observed from the shearing zone to the bottom of lower ring. Under undrained condition, particle crushing was observed only at the shearing zone, which has approximately 1 cm thick. It means that a significant high shear speed under undrained condition can result in increased landslide hazard.
To investigate the deformation properties of TiC-(5-20) mol% Mo solid solution single crystals at high temperature by compression testing, single crystals of various compositions were grown by the radio frequency floating zone technique and were deformed by compression at temperature from 1250K to 2270K at strain rates from $5.1{\times}10^{-5}$ to $5.9{\times}10^{-3}/s$. The plastic flow property of solid solution single crystals was found to be clearly different among a three-temperature range (low, intermediate and high temperature ranges) whose boundaries were dependent on the strain rate. From the observed property, we conclude that the deformation in the low temperature range is controlled by the Peierls mechanism, in the intermediate temperature range by the dynamic strain aging and in the high temperature range by the solute atmosphere dragging mechanism. The work softening tends to become less evident with an increasing experimental temperature and with a decreasing strain rate. The temperature and strain rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress is the strongest in the high temperature range. The curves are divided into three parts with different slopes by a transition temperature. The critical resolved shear stress (${\tau}_{0.2}$) at the high temperature range showed that Mo content dependence of ${\tau}_{0.2}$ with temperature and the dependence is very marked at lower temperature. In the higher temperature range, ${\tau}_{0.2}$ increases monotonously with an increasing Mo content.
An experimental study for mesophase pitch prepared from coal tar pitch has been carried out to clarify the rheological behaviors in the molten state. The apparent viscosity, shear stress, shear rate, Qunoline insoluble(QI), and softening point(SP) change were investigated especially. The conditions to increase mesophase content during polymerization were heat treatment time of 5 hrs, catalyst concentration of 3% and reaction temperature of $420^{\circ}C$. Apparent viscosity change with increase in temperature of pitches was different according to the heat treatment conditions and apparent viscosity increased with increasing heat treatment temperature, heat treatment time, contents of mesophase, on the contrary, fluidity is decreased. Rheological behavior of molten mesophase pitches at about $270^{\circ}C$ showed Newtonian behavior below $375^{\circ}C$ and non-Newtonian behavior above $270^{\circ}C$, the flow behavior was analyzed with Casson model.

Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.

A study has been made to investigate the high temperature deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloyand to predict the final microstructure under given forming conditions. Equiaxed and $Widmanst\ddot{a}tten$ microstructures of Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared as initial microstructures. By performing the compression tests at high temperatures$(700\~1100^{\circ}C)$ and at a wide range of strain rates$(10^{-4}\~10^2/s)$, various parameters such as strain rate sensitivity(m) and activation energy(Q) were calculated and used to establish constitutive equations. When the specimens were deformed up to strain 0.6, equiaxed microstructure did not show any significant changes in microstructure, while $Widmanst\ddot{a}tten$ microstructure revealed considerable flow softening, which was attributed to the globularization of a platelet at the temperature range of $800\~970^{\circ}C$ and at the strain rate range of $10^{-4}\~10^{-2}/s$. To predict the final microstructure after forming, finite element analysis was performed considering the microstructural evolution during the deformation. The grain size and the volume fraction of second phase of deformed body were predicted and compared with the experimental results.
