  • The objective of experimental study is to apply simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry)to high_speed flow characteristics within Ginseng washing machine. Three different kinds of flow rate(15,20,27 $\ell$/min)are selected as experimental conditions. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented by direct calculation of correlation coefficients. Instantaneous velocity distribution, time-mean velocity distribution and velocity profiles are represented quantitatively at the full-scale region for the deeper understanding of the flow characteristics in Ginseng washing machine.

  • In-cylinder flows such as tumble and swirl play an important role on the engine combustion efficiencies and emission formations. The tumble flow, which is dominant in current high performance gasoline engines, is able to effect fuel consumptions and emissions under a partial load condition in addition to the volumetric efficiency under a wide open throttle condition. Therefore, it is important to optimize the tumble ratio of a gasoline engine for better fuel economy, lower emissions, and maximum volumetric efficiency. First step for optimizing a tumble ratio is to measure a tumble ratio accurately. For a tumble ratio measurement, many different methods have been developed and used such as steady flow rig, PIV, PTV, and LDV. However, it is not well known about the relations among the measured tumble ratios using different methods. The purpose of this research is to correlate the tumble ratios measured using three different methods and find out merits and demerits of each measurement method. In this research the tumble flow was measured, compared, and correlated using three different measurement methods at the same engine: steady flow rig; 2-dimensional PIV; and 3-dimensional PTV water flow rig.

  • Thermal mass flow meter(TMF) and thermal mass flow controller(MFC) were used to measure and to control the mass flow rate of gases. TMF and MFC were designed for specified working pressure and gas. For the case of different working pressure and gases, the flow rate measurement accuracy decreased dramatically. In this study, a TMF and MFC was tested with three different gases and pressure range from 0.2 MPa up to 1.0 MPa. Effect of specific heat causes to increase flow measurement error as much as ratio of specific heat compared with reference gas. Changing of pressure causes to increase flow rate measurement error about -0.2% as the working pressure decreased 0.1 MPa. Response time of MFC was below 3.12 s for the case of increasing of flow rate. But the response time was increased up to 6.92 s for the case of decreasing of flow rate. When the solenoid valve was fully closed, a initial delay time of output of MFC was increased up to 1.36 s.

  • An Altitude Engine Test Facility(AETF) was built at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute in October 1999 and has been being operated for altitude testing of the gas turbine engines of 3,000 Ibf class or less. The AETF has been calibrated using several engines such as J69 engine of Teledyne Co. as a facility checkout engine. Based on the test results, uncertainty analyses on the air flow rate and thrust were performed according to ASME PTC 19.1-1998. As the analyses showed that the level of uncertainty was not satisfactory over the whole operating envelop, several modifications of the facility and testing method were made in order to improve the measurement uncertainty. As a result, the uncertainty of the air flow measurement was improved by 0.1 % over all the test conditions, and the net thrust measurement by upto 3%. The improved measurement uncertainties of air flow and thrust are 0.68-0.73% and 0.4-1.3%, respectively.

  • Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) allows measurement of blood flow velocity to be made from the basal intracerebral vessels. Blood flow velocity in TCD is highly affected not only by blood vessel diameter, blood flow volume, blood viscosity, but also age and sex. Therefore, the study is focused on the correlation between TCD measurement index and sex/age. Subjects were 214 (male 147, famale 67) who had TCD for headache and stroke evaluations at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital neurology department from December 2009 to April 2010. Sex did not show significant differences with mean flow velocity (MFV), peak systolic flow velocity (PSFV), end diastolic flow velocity (EDFV), pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) in middle cerebral artery (MCA). Although age also did not show significant differences with MFV and PSFV, EDFV has statistically decreased with age, and PI and RI has statistically increased with age. In addition, age showed significant correlation with MFV, EDFV, PI and RI, but not with PSFV. Therefore, TCD is definitely correlated with age and sex, so that those influencial factors must be considered when being tested.

  • This paper reports on the internal flow of a centrifugal mini pump working at the low flow rate operating conditions. The RNG $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed to simulate the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the pump. To examine and certify the simulation results, a transparent acrylic centrifugal mini pump model which is suitable for PIV measurement has been developed. The tongue region and the passages region between blades were investigated using PIV. In order to eliminate the effect of refraction on the area closed to the wall and increase the measurement accuracy, the fluorescent particles were scatted into the working fluid with the tracing particles. It is found from the calculation and PIV measurement results that there is a large area of recirculation flow near the tongue at low flow rate operating conditions. The computationally predicted water head using the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model at low flow rate operating conditions are in very good agreement with the experimentally measured water head and the mean velocity distributions at investigation area obtained by PIV and calculation showed a satisfactory agreement as well. Meanwhile, the results of PIV measurements show that the flow status in one passage is different to another. And for capturing the internal flow detail information, the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is not very suitable.

  • Increase of blood viscosity significantly changes the flow resistance and wall shear stress which are related with cardiovascular diseases. For measurement of blood viscosity, microfluidic method has proposed by monitoring pressure between sample and reference flows in the downstream of a microchannel with two inlets. However, it is difficult to apply this method to unknown flow conditions. To measure blood viscosity under unknown flow conditions, a microfluidic method based on micro particle image velocimetry(PIV) is proposed in this study. Flow rate in the microchannel was estimated by assuming velocity profiles represent mean value along channel depth. To demonstrate the measurement accuracy of flow rate, the flow rates measured at the upstream and downstream of a T-shaped microchannel were compared with injection flow rate. The present results indicate that blood viscosity could be reasonably estimated according to shear rate by measuring the interfacial width and flow rate of blood flow. This method would be useful for understanding the effects of hemorheological features on the cardiovascular diseases.

  • Understanding of turbulent flow in the reactor coolant pump (RCP) is a premise of the optimal design of the RCP. Flow structures in the RCP, in view of the specially devised spherical casing, are more complicated than those associated with conventional pumps. Hitherto, knowledge of the flow characteristics of the RCP has been far from sufficient. Research into the nonintrusive measurement of the internal flow of the RCP has rarely been reported. In the present study, flow measurement using particle image velocimetry is implemented to reveal flow features of the RCP model. Velocity and vorticity distributions in the diffuser and spherical casing are obtained. The results illuminate the complexity of the flows in the RCP. Near the lower end of the discharge nozzle, three-dimensional swirling flows and flow separation are evident. In the diffuser, the imparity of the velocity profile with respect to different axial cross sections is verified, and the velocity increases gradually from the shroud to the hub. In the casing, velocity distribution is nonuniform over the circumferential direction. Vortices shed consistently from the diffuser blade trailing edge. The experimental results lend sound support for the optimal design of the RCP and provide validation of relevant numerical algorithms.

  • The goal of paper is to investigate the flow and scalar distribution through the HP Nozzle Guide Vane (NGV) passage. Flow and scalar distribution measurement are conducted by using 5-hole pressure probe and $CO_2$ tracing technique, respectively. Three different experimental cases are considered depending on cooling flow condition. The result shows that the vortical secondary flow patterns are observed clearly and these flow characteristics maintain through the NGV passage regardless of cooling flow injection. Compared to center region, the high axial velocity flow is observed near wall region due to cooling flow injection. Without cooling flow, the $CO_2$ (scalar) distribution becomes to be uniform quickly due to the strong flow mixing phenomenon. However, in cases of cooling flow, scalar distribution is significantly non-uniform.
