A Sea breeze front (SBF) appears clear particularly if there is opposing wind, and the convergence zone along a SBF affects air quality in coastal areas. This study analyzes features of SBF separation in the presence of an opposing flow in the southeastern coastal area of Korea Peninsula. Using a Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) numerical simulation and an opposing flow, two types of SBF were observed at Masan coastal area of Korea. In one, the SBF penetrated inland despite of the opposing flow at Jinhae (1100 LST), Wondong (1700 LST), Saenglim (1700 LST), and Miryang (1700 LST). In the other, the SBF remained on the coastline along with Jinhae (1100 LST), Masan (1400 LST), Jinbuk (1400 LST), and Gaecheon (1700 LST), because the inflow of the sea breeze was not sufficient to penetrate inland against the opposing flow. This study shows that SBFs are affected by the formation of an opposing flow, as well as the inflows of a sea breeze and the opposing flow.
This paper deals with dynamic analysis of Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) flow control in natural gas pipelines. The dynamic behaviour of PIG depends on the pressure differential generated by injected gas flow behind the tail of the PIG and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. To analyze dynamic behaviour characteristics (e.g. gas flow, the PIG position and velocity) mathematical models are derived. Tow types of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations are developed for unsteady flow analysis of the PIG driving and expelled gas. Also, a non-homogeneous differential equation for dynamic analysis of the PIG is given. The nonlinear equations are solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with a regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. Runge-Kutta method is used for solving the steady flow equations to get the initial flow values and for solving the dynamic equation of the PIG. The upstream and downstream regions are divided into a number of elements of equal length. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. Simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea gas corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system. Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show that the derived mathematical models and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of the PIG with a given operational condition of pipeline.

KOGAS(Korea Gas Corporation) has about a hundred of local stations to supply natural gas to the city gas companies and the power stations. As some severe flow fluctuation phenomena are observed in several governor stations, the investigation about the reasons and factors which are relating to flow fluctuation has been started. Some field surveys hav been carried out and experimental studies have been performed to find the fluctuation mechanism. As a result, it is found that the flow fluctuation is related with the length of straight pipe in front of the meter, the size of the header pipe and the variation of demand at the city gas company and the power station. Furthermore. it is also proved that both the length of the transmitter cable and the status of the coating of signal transmission cable do not affect flow fluctuation, but the measurement range of the differential pressure transmitter influences flow fluctuation. On the other hand, as the averaging the flow fluctuation is converged to less than 0.1 % in almost all of the cases, it is concluded that the quantity of flow fluctuation do not relates to metering accuracy directly.
This paper deals with dynamic behaviour analysis for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow control in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behaviour of the PIG is depending on the different Pressure between the rear and nose parts, which is generated by injected gas flow behind PIG's tail and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. To analyze the dynamic behaviour characteristics such as gas flow in pipeline, and the PIG's position and velocity, mathematical model is derived as two types of a nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equation for unsteady flow analysis of the PIG driving and expelled gas, and nonhomogeneous differential equation for dynamic analysis of PIG. The nonlinear equation is solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with the regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The Runge-Kuta method is used when we solve the steady flow equations to get initial flow values and the dynamic equation of PIG. The gas upstream and downstream of PIG are divided into a number of elements of equal length. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show us that the derived mathematical model and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of PIG with different operational conditions of pipeline.
Conjugate heat analysis on a high pressure turbine stage including secondary flow paths has been carried out. The secondary flow paths were designed to be located in front of the nozzle and between the nozzle and rotor domains. Thermal boundary conditions such as empirical based temperature or heat transfer coefficient were specified at nozzle and rotor solid domains. To create heat transfer interface between the nozzle solid domain and the rotor fluid domain, frozen rotor with automatic pitch control was used assuming that there is little temperature variation along the circumferential direction at the nozzle solid and rotor fluid domain interface. The simulation results showed that secondary flow injected from the secondary flow path not only prevents main flow from penetrating into the secondary flow path, but also effectively cools down the nozzle and rotor surfaces. Also thermal barrier coating with different thickness was numerically implemented on the nozzle surface. The thermal barrier coating further reduces temperature gradient over the entire nozzle surface as well as the overall temperature level.

This paper introduces a simple nonlinear adaptive control method for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behavior of the PIG depends on the different pressure across its body and the bypass flow through it. The system dynamics includes: dynamics of driving gas flow behind the PIG, dynamics of expelled gas in front of the PIG, and dynamics of the PIG. The method of characteristics (MOC) and Runger-Kuta method are used to solve the dynamics of flow. The PIG velocity is controlled through the amount of bypass flow across its body. A simple nonlinear adaptive controller based on the backstepping method is introduced. To derive the controller, three system parameters should be measured: the PIG position, its velocity and the velocity of bypass flow across the PIG body. The simulation has been done with a pipeline segment in the KOGAS low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Three cases of interest are considered: the PIG starts to move at its launcher, the PIG arrives at its receiver and the PIG restarts after stopping in the pipeline by obstruction. The simulation results show that the proposed nonlinear adaptive controller attained good performance and can be used for controlling the PIG velocity.

Experiments were done for performance and flow characteristics of a counter-rotating axial flow fan. Performance curves of a counter-rotating axial flow fan were obtained and compared by varying the blade pitch angles. The fan characteristic curves were obtained following the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fan flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe and a slanted hot-wire. The velocity profiles between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed at the peak efficiency point. The peak efficiency of the counter-rotating axial flow fan was improved about 15% respectively, compared with the single rotating axial fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively law efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. The counter-rotating axial flow fan showed that the swirl velocity generated by the front rotor was eliminated by the rear rotor and the associated dynamic pressure is recovered in the from of the static pressure rise.

In this study, we conducted analysis of bubble dynamics and flow of liquid phase change material(PCM) using shadowgraphy and particle image velocimetry(PIV). Characteristics of internal flow varied depending on locations of injection when solid PCM was liquefied from heated vertical wall. When bubbles rose immediately, they exhibited elliptical shape and zigzag trajectory. In contrast, when bubbles rose after merging at the bottom of solid PCM, with equivalent diameter for the inter-wall distance of 0.64 or greater, they showed a jellyfish shape and strong rocking behavior. It was observed by the PIV that the small ellipse bubbles made most strong flow inside the liquid PCM. Furthermore, the flow velocity was highest in the case of front injection, as the directions of temperature gradients and bubble-driven flow were aligned. The results underscore the significant influence of injection location on various characteristics, including bubble size, shape, rising path of bubbles, and internal flow.
The prediction of pressure drop for a droplet flow in a confined micro channel is presented using FE-FTM (Finite Element - Front Tracking Method). A single droplet is passing through 5:1:5 contraction - straight narrow channel - expansion flow domain. The pressure drop is investigated especially when the droplet flows in the straight narrow channel. We explore the effects of droplet size, capillary number (Ca), viscosity ratio ($\chi$) between droplet and medium, and fluid elasticity represented by the Oldroyd-B constitutive model on the excess pressure drop (${\Delta}p^+$) against single phase flow. The tightly fitted droplets in the narrow channel are mainly considered in the range of $0.001{\leq}Ca{\leq}1$ and $0.01{\leq}{\chi}{\leq}100$. In Newtonian droplet/Newtonian medium, two characteristic features are observed. First, an approximate relation ${\Delta}p^+{\sim}{\chi}$ observed for ${\chi}{\geq}1$. The excess pressure drop necessary for droplet flow is roughly proportional to $\chi$. Second, ${\Delta}p^+$ seems inversely proportional to Ca, which is represented as ${\Delta}p^+{\sim}Ca^m$ with negative m irrespective of $\chi$. In addition, we observe that the film thickness (${\delta}_f$) between droplet interface and channel wall decreases with decreasing Ca, showing ${\delta}_f{\sim}Ca^n$ Can with positive n independent of $\chi$. Consequently, the excess pressure drop (${\Delta}p^+$) is strongly dependent on the film thickness (${\delta}_f$). The droplets larger than the channel width show enhancement of ${\Delta}p^+$, whereas the smaller droplets show no significant change in ${\Delta}p^+$. Also, the droplet deformation in the narrow channel is affected by the flow history of the contraction flow at the entrance region, but rather surprisingly ${\Delta}p^+$ is not affected by this flow history. Instead, ${\Delta}p^+$ is more dependent on ${\delta}_f$ irrespective of the droplet shape. As for the effect of fluid elasticity, an increase in ${\delta}_f$ induced by the normal stress difference in viscoelastic medium results in a drastic reduction of ${\Delta}p^+$.

This study reports a numerical analysis of the internal flow characteristics of the integrated urea-SCR muffler system with the various geometries of the multi-perforated tube which is set up between the muffler inlet and in front of SCR catalysts. The multi-perforated tube is generally used to disperse uniformly the urea-water solution spray and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, resulting in the increased $NO_x$ reduction and decreased ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the velocity distributions in front of the SCR catalyst, which is ultimately quantified as the uniformity index, were investigated for the optimal muffler system design. The steady flow model was applied by using a general-purpose commercial software package. The air at the room temperature was used as a working fluid, instead of the exhaust gas and urea-water solution spray mixture. From the analysis results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected to the formation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst.
