To alleviate NOx emission, a variety of approaches has been applied. In marine diesels, the application of SCR systems has been considered an effective exhaust aftertreatment method for NOx emission control. Most current SCR systems use a various catalyst for the reaction of ammonia with NOx to form nitrogen and water. In theory, it is possible to achieve 100% NOx if the $NH_3$-to-NOx ratio is 1:1. However, the reaction has a limited non-uniformity of the exhaust gas flow and ammonia concentration distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the optimum flow conditions. In order to achieve uniform flow at monolith front face, we are equipped with a various mixed devices. In this paper, it is presented that the mixed devices play an important role improvement of flow patterns and particle distributions of $NH_3$ by numerical simulation.
Synchrotron X-ray micro imaging technique was employed to non-invasively monitor the water flow inside xylem vessels in a bamboo leaf. The phase contrast X-ray images clearly visualized plant anatomy and the rise of a water front inside the vessels. Consecutive X-ray images taken for 60 seconds revealed water rise kinetics against gravity in the xylem of a cut dry leaf taken from a bamboo tree. For the first time, traces of water rise, variation of contact angle between water and xylem wall as well as the internal structure of xylem were obtained. In xylem vessels, a repeating flow pattern has a typical flow velocity of $30.7{\mu}m/s$ and faster flow is established intermittently. It is concluded that the transmission type of X-ray micro imaging can be used as a powerful tool to investigate the ascent of sap in the xylem vessels at a resolution higher than that of MRI.
Numerical analysis has been conducted for improving air flow characteristics in the exhaust aftertreatment system of diesel-fueled passenger cars by changing axial length and cone shape of a DPF diffuser. The results of air velocity and static pressure distributions along with air flow uniformity results suggest that a diffuser shape with 2D or 3D function type is better for air flow patterns in front of a DPF.
The variations of the temperature field in a passenger compartment were measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) solution. This temperature measurement technique was proved to be useful for analyzing the ventilation flow. The flow field in the passenger compartment was visualized using a particle streak method with pulsed laser light sheet. The temperature field and flow field in the passenger copartment were affected significantly by the ventilation mode. The panel-vent mode heating had shorter elapse time to reach a uniform temperature than the foot-vent mode under the same ventilation condition and nonuniformity inside the passenger compartment could be minimized effectively by using the bilevel heating mode. The temperature increase rate in the rear passenger compartment was iower than the front compartment, especially in the vicinity of the rear seat occupants' knee level.
A new flow model is developed for the analysis of compression molding of sheet molding compounds(SMC) and penalty finite element formulation is presented to predict flow front progressions more accurately. In this model SMC is assumed nonisothermal fluid, which has different viscosities in extension and in shear. The flow is allowed to slip at the mold and is resisted by friction force which is proportional to the relative velocity at mold surface. For the verification of the model, the press force and flow patterns are compared with those of experiments and available results by other works in this field. It is also demonstrated, using the computational procedure described and the proposed model, that optimal initial charge shapes for the filling can be effectively computed.
The objective of this study is to understand the flow above the front edge of low-rise building roofs. The greatest suction on the building is known to occur at this location as a result of the formation of conical vortices in the separated flow zone. It is expected that the relationship between this suction and upstream flow conditions can be better understood through the analysis of the vortex flow mechanism. Experimental measurements were used, along with predictions from numerical simulations of delta wing vortex flows, to develop a model of the pressure field within and beneath the conical vortex. The model accounts for the change in vortex suction with wind angle, and includes a parameter indicating the strength of the vortex. The model can be applied to both mean and time dependent surface pressures, and is validated in a companion paper.
In the low pressure selective catalytic reduction (LP SCR) system, the uniformity of both ammonia concentration and exhaust gas flow at the SCR catalyst layer are important design factor for the efficient SCR-deNOx performance. According to the shape of the guide vane and static mixer, numerical simulations were conducted to analyze flow patterns and finally to find out the appropriate alternative for uniform flow at the front of catalyst in the real scale LP SCR reactor. The variations of gas velocity and ammonia concentration were quantitatively evaluated. Based on the present results, the shape was devised to satisfy the design criteria.
Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.
The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm. Time-resolved velocity component and velocity spectrum are obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), and the flow patterns induced by rotating disc in the ODD are calculated by a commercial finite volume method at the same time. The results show that the front holes reduce flow-induced noise and the position of pickup body only affects flow near the window. Furthermore, it is possible for cooling of heat sources in the drive through measuring the flow fields under the tray. In addition, the numerical results are well matched up to the experimental results, therefore, the validation of the numerical results can be achieved. From the validation of numerical results, it is possible to predict the flow characteristics of the region where it is unable to conduct the experiment.
This paper introduces modeling and simulation results for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) with bypass flow control in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behaviour of the PIG depends on the different pressure across its body and the bypass flow through it. The system dynamics includes: dynamics of driving gas flow behind the PIG, dynamics of expelled gas in front of the PIG, dynamics of bypass flow, and dynamics of the PIG. The bypass flow across the PIG is treated as incompressible flow with the assumption of its Mach number smaller than 0.45. The governing nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations for unsteady gas flows are solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with the regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The Runge-Kuta method is used for solving the steady flow equations to get initial flow values and the dynamic equation of the PIG. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. Simulation results show us that the derived mathematical model and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of the PIG with bypass flow under given operational conditions of pipeline.
