  • Korean traditional paper (Hanji) making technology has adopted two kinds of sheet forming processes, which called "Oebal-choji": and "Ssangbal-choji". The sheet forming process of Oebal-choji is an original method developed in Korea. At first, paper stock is dipped onto the mold and flow away in the forward direction. Then, paper stock is scooped again and rhythmically rocked from side to side, this work is repeated several times. Through this operation the fibers intertwine and paper layers are formed. Ssangbal-choji is almost same as the Nagashizuki, which used in Japan. In this method, paper stock is scooped onto the mold and rhythmically rocked backwards and forwards several times, the water drains slowly through the bamboo screen and then sheet is formed. Tamezuki method is used in Japan and China. This is a method in which the mold is dipped into the paper stock once and left to drain. In the Ssangbal-choji and Nagashizuki methods, the most of excess solution is cast out while in the Tamezuki all of it is allowed to drain through the mold. This study was carried out to investigate the physical properties of the Hanjis that were made by Oebal-choji, Ssangbal-choji, Nagashizuki, and Tamezuki sheet forming processes. The results were follows; Physical properties of the Oebal-choji Hanji were better than those of Ssangbal-choji, Nagashizuki, and Tamezuki. Oebal-choji Hanji made little difference of paper strength between MD and CD, but Ssangbal-chjo and Nagashizuki Hanjis made wide difference. And there are no difference of paper strength between MD and CD on the Tamezuki Hanji. On the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) observation of the Hanjis, Oebal-choji made well crossed fiber orientation than those of other forming processes.r forming processes.

  • Gas sparging is one of the techniques used to control the concentration polarization during ultrafiltration. In this work, the effects of gas sparging in stratified flow regime were investigated during gel layer controlling cross flow ultrafiltration in a rectangular channel. Synthetic solution of pectin was used as the gel forming solute. The liquid and gas flow rates were selected such that a stratified flow regime was prevalent in the channel. A mass transfer model was developed for this system to quantify the effects of gas flow rates on mass transfer coefficient (Sherwood number). The results were compared with the case of no gas sparging. Gas sparging led to an increase of mass transfer coefficient by about 23% in this case. The limitation of the developed model was also evaluated and it was observed that beyond a gas flow rate of 20 l/h, the model was unable to explain the experimental observation, i.e., the decrease in permeate flux with flow rate.

  • The two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species transport in the gas phase and mass, momentum and energy in the liquid phase are solved simultaneously in spherical coordinates in order to study heating and vaporization of a droplet entrained in the oscillating flow. The numerical solution gives the velocity and temperature distribution in both gas and liquid phase as a function of time. When the gas flow oscillates around an vaporizing droplet, the liquid flow circulates in the clockwise or counterclockwise direction and the temperature distribution in the liquid phase changes its shapes, depending on the gas fow direction. When the gas flow changes its direction of circulating liquid flow is opposite to the gas flow, forming two vortex circulating in the opposite direction. During the heating period, the difference in the maximum and minimum temperature is large, followed by the almost uniform temperature slightly below the boiling temperature. The mass and heat transfer from the droplet depend on the droplet temperature, droplet diameter and the magnitude of relative velocity, giving the droplet lifetime different from the d$^{2}$-law.

  • A biosensor with PZT piezoelectric ceramic crystal was developed for the detection of formaldehyde gas. Poled PZT piezoelectric ceramic disk was made from ZrO2, TiO2 and Nb2O5, together with the addition of PbO and polyvinyl alcohol, through various processes of mixing, calcination drying, crushing, forming, sintering, polishing, ion coating and poling. Oscillator circuit of sensor was made of operational amplifier(AD811AN). Formaldehyde dehydrogenase was immobilized onto a piezoelectic ceramic crystal, together with the cofactors, reduced glutathione and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The effect of flow rate on the sensitivity was determined by varing the flow rate of carrier gas from 24.7mL/min to 111.7mL/min through detector cell. The results indicated that as the flow rate was increased, the recovery rate was increased. And a significant increase in the sensitivity was observed in enhanced flow rate of carrier gas. Frequency difference(ΔF) of immobilized PZT piezoelectic disk increased proportionally to the concentration gas and reproduced to repeated exposures of formaldehyde gas(28ppm, Δ68Hz).

  • The paper deals with an analysis of an extrusion process with a divided material flow in a combined radial - backward extrusion. We have discussed the influences of tool geometry such as punch nose angle, relative gap height, die corner radius on material flow and surface expansion into can and flange region. To analyse the process, numerical simulations by the FEM and experiment by physical modeling using Al alloy as a model material have been performed. Based on the results, the influence of fixed parameters on the distribution of divided material flow and surface expansion are obtained.

  • In sheet metal forming process using press and draw die some defect can be made because of the high pressure of air pocket between draw die and the product. The purpose of this study is to develop a program to decide an optimal combination of air vent hole size and number to prevent those defect on product. The air inside air pocket is considered as ideal gas and the compression and expansion is assumed as isentropic process. The mass flow is computed in two flow condition: unchocked and chocked condition. The present computation obtains required cross-sectional area of air vent hole for not exceeding the user specified pressure such as the pressure for yielding strength of the product or the pressure for unchocked flow. To validate the program the present results are compared with the results of other researchers and commercial CFD code.

  • In this study, bacterial growth was assessed by flow cytometry analysis of fluorescent probes-stained bacteria. Flow cytometry has many advantages of rapid analytical time, a low standard deviation, and highly sensitive detection of live and Dead E.coli over colony forming assay. When untreated bacteria were stained by using Thiazole Orange (TO) and Propidium Iodide (PI), double staining had a short analytical time as compared with that of single staining while its error rate was similar to that of single staining. Through double staining experiments, it was determined that optimal concentrations for TO and PI staining were 420 nM and $9.6{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Recently, boss and rib test based on backward extrusion process was proposed to quantitative evaluate the interfacial friction condition in bulk forming process. In this test, the tube-shaped punch with hole pressurizes the workpiece so that the boss and rib are formed along the hole and outer surface of the punch. It was experimentally and numerically revealed that the height of boss is higher than that of the rib under the severe friction condition. This work is focused on the effect of the punch design and friction condition on deformation pattern in boss and rib test. From the boss and rib test simulations, it was found that there is slight variation in both the heights of boss and rib according to the length of punch land, nose radius, and face angle. However the hole diameter of the punch and the clearance between the punch and die have a significant influence on the heights of the boss and rib. In addition, the effect of flow stress was also investigated on the deformation patterns through FE simulations.
