  • In order to ensure the signal could be transported cocrrectly, the microwave devices made of Aluminmn alloys must be assembled and brazed flaw-freely. In this paper, a new approach of using contact reactive brazing (CRB) process to realize the compact brazing of Aluminum alloys was put forward. The reason for this is that CRB, which realizes bonding depending on the liquid alloy produced by metallurgy reaction between the materials to be joined, overcomes the limitation of traditional brazing that the macroscopically disorganized filling flow of liquid filler metal would result in defects in brazed seam. Joint ofLF21 (AA3003) with the compactness of over 95% was brazed by the method of CRB using Si powder as an interlayer. At last, the influence of the physical parameter related to the Si powder interlayer on the compactness of the joints was investigated in detail.

  • An 18-day-old male neonate with hypoplastic left heart syndrome underwent surgical intervention by modification of the Norwood procedure on September 23, 1986. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a serious congenital cardiac anomaly that has a fatal outlook if left untreated. Included in this anomaly are [1] aortic valve atresia, and hypoplasia of the ascending aorta and aortic arch, [1] mitral valve atresia or hypoplasia, and [3] diminutive or absent left ventricle. Patent ductus arteriosus is essential for any survival, and there is usually a patent foramen ovale. Coarctation of the aorta is frequently associated with the lesion.z With a limited period of cardiopulmonary bypass, deep hypothermia, and circulatory arrest, the ductus arteriosus was excised. The main pulmonary artery was divided immediately below its branches, and the distal stump of the divided pulmonary artery was closed with a pericardial patch. The aortic arch was incised, and a 1 5mm tubular Dacron prosthesis was inserted between the main pulmonary artery and the aortic arch. A 4mm shunt of polytetrafluoroethylene graft was established between the new ascending aorta and the right pulmonary artery to provide controlled pulmonary blood flow. Following rewarming, the heart started to beat regularly, but the patient could not be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass. At autopsy, the patient was found to have hypoplasia of the aortic tract complex with mitral atresia and aortic atresia. A secundum atrial septal defect was noted. Right atrial and ventricular hypertrophy was present, and the left ventricle was entirely absent. Although unsuccessful in this case report, continuing experience with hypoplastic left heart syndrome will lead to an improvement in result.

  • A lot of researchers have been investigating interactive portable projection systems such as a mini-projector. In addition, in exhibition halls and museums, there is a trend toward using interactive projection systems to make viewing more exciting and impressive. They can also be applied in the field of art, for example, in creating shadow plays. The key idea of the interactive portable projection systems is to recognize the user's gesture in real-time. In this paper, a vision-based shadow gesture recognition method is proposed for interactive projection systems. The gesture recognition method is based on the screen image obtained by a single web camera. The method separates only the shadow area by combining the binary image with an input image using a learning algorithm that isolates the background from the input image. The region of interest is recognized with labeling the shadow of separated regions, and then hand shadows are isolated using the defect, convex hull, and moment of each region. To distinguish hand gestures, Hu's invariant moment method is used. An optical flow algorithm is used for tracking the fingertip. Using this method, a few interactive applications are developed, which are presented in this paper.

  • Recently, the anterolateral thigh(ALT) flap, based on the septocutaneous vessels or musculocutaneous perforators from the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery has gained popularity in head and neck soft-tissue reconstruction. It has some advantages in free-flap surgery with respect to the radial forearm free flap, such as low donor site morbidity, availability of different tissues with large amounts of skin, adaptability as a sensate or flow-through flap (with the possibility of harvesting a long pedicle with a suitable vessel diameter). Moreover, the thickness of the flap is adjustable until the subdermal fat level, allowing it to be used as a thin or ultrathin flap. This clinical cases are ALT free flap reconstructions without functional impairment of the donor limbs (transitory and permanent) based on anastomosis with superficial temporal arteries and veins in patient of huge resection defect on face, lip and tongue.

  • It is well known that the PD (Partial Discharge) signals are generated if insulators have some defects such as voids in electrical facility and various PD detection methods are developed for preventing electrical troubles. So, an interest for the PD signals is higher and higher according to the high concern for the defects detection method of the aging electrical facility. When the equipment to detect PD signals installed at site and it works, a lot of noises flow in the equipment from surrounding situation and it will be mixed with original PD waveform. So we can not get the desired PD waveform. Therefore, there are many trial to reject or suppress the noise from the PD signals from long times ago. The greater of them used the hardware such as bridge circuits and frequency filters to suppress the noise. This paper proposed a novel noise rejection method in acquired data from PD detection equipment. The noise has the irregular phase and higher signal level than real PD, and noise decision is performed after inspection of pulse distribution in ${\Phi}$-q-n graph of acquired data from PD detection equipments. By experimental results on high voltage electric equipments, it is shown that proposed method has good performance. It is expected that this noise rejection technology is useful in numeric calculation and trend management of PD level.

  • This paper introduces a new methodology to apply the interpolation technique wi th optimum pattern to voltage-reactive power control of power system. The conventional tool for the optimal operation of power system is Optimal Power Flow(OPF) by standard optimization techniques. The achievement of solution through OPF programs has a defect of computation time, so that it is impossible to apply the OPF programs to the real-time control area. The proposed method presents a solution in a short period of time and an output with a good accuracy. The optimum pattern is a set of input-output pairs, where an input is a load level and a type of outage and an output is the result of OPF program corresponding to the input. The output in the OPF represents control variables of voltage-reactive power control. The interpolation technique is used to obtain the solution for an arbitrary input. As a result, the new technique helps operators in the process of the real-time voltage-reactive power control in both normal and emergency operating states.

  • Evaluating stability of dam foundations is one of the prime areas of any rock engineering investigations. Despite best engineering efforts in the design and construction of dam foundations, the foundation regime of a constructed dam suffers deterioration due to continuous erosion from backwater current of dam discharge and dynamic effects of loading and unloading process. Even during construction, development of frequent cracks due to sudden thermal cooling of concrete blocks is not uncommon. This paper presents two case studies from India and Bhutan. In the first case, the back current of water discharge from the Srisailam dam in India had continuously eroded the apron and has eaten into the dam foundation. In the second case with dam construction at Tala Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, sudden overflow of river during the construction stage of dam had led to development of three major cracks across the dam blocks. This was ascribed to adiabatic cooling effect of concrete blocks overlain by chilled water flow. Non-destructive evaluation of rock mass condition in the defect regime by the borehole GPR survey helped in arriving at the crux so as to formulate appropriate restoration plan.

  • Hot-forging process and die design were made for a large-scale compressor wheel of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by using the results of 2-D FEM simulation. The design integrated the geometry-controlled approach and the processing contour map based on the dynamic materials model and the flow stability criteria. In order to obtain the processing contour map of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, compression tests were carried out in the temperature range of $915^{\circ}C$ to $1015^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $10^{-3}s^{-1}$ to $10s^{-1}$. In the die design of the compressor wheel using the rigid-plastic FEM simulation, forging dimensional accuracy, the capacity of the forging machine and defect-free forging were considered as main design factors. The microstructure of hot forged wheel using the designed die showed a typical alpha-beta structure without forging-defects.

  • Distribution of the local properties in GdBCO and YBCO coated conductors was investigated using Low-temperature Scanning Laser and Hall Probe Microscopy (LTSLHPM). We prepared GdBCO and YBCO coated conductors to study the spatial distribution of the current density in a single bridge. Inhomogeneity of the ${T_c}^{max}$ in the bridge was analyzed from experimental results of Scanning Laser Microscopy (SLM) near the superconducting transition. The local transport and screening current in the bridge were also investigated using Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy (SHPM). A series of line scans of SLM of the GdBCO and YBCO sample showed that lines with more inhomogeneous distributions of ${\delta}V$ had more inhomogeneous distributions of ${T_c}^{max}$. The defect of the superconducting layer of the GdBCO sample caused by damage to the substrate affected the current flow. And we could analyze the redistribution of the current density using SLM and SHPM.

  • Wall thinning defect due to flow accelerated corrosion is one of major aging phenomena in most power plant industries, and it results in reducing load carrying capacity of the piping systems. A failure testing system was set up for real scale elbows containing various simulated wall thinning defects, and monotonic in-plane bending tests were performed under internal pressure to find out the failure behavior of thinned elbows. Various finite element models were generated and analysed to figure out and simulate the behavior for other thinning shapes and loading conditions. This paper presents the decreasing trends of load carrying capacity according to the thinning dimensions which were revealed from the investigation of finite element analysis results. A mechanical integrity evaluation model for thinned elbows was proposed, also. This model can be used to calculate the TES plastic load of thinned elbows for general internal pressure, thinning location, and in-plane bending direction.
