In this investigation, flow patterns past two identical nearby spheres at Re=300 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two spheres in terms of the distance between the spheres and, the angle inclined with respect to the main flow direction. It turns out that significant changes in shedding characteristics are noticed depending on how the two spheres are positioned. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose a diagram for flow pattern on the distance vs. angle plane. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use that diagram to identify flow patterns past two identical spheres arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

Flow patterns in the presence of two identical nearby circular cylinders at Re=100 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. Eight distinct flow patterns were identified based on vorticity contours and streamlines, which are Base-Bleed, Biased-Base-Bleed, Shear-Layer-Reattachment, Induced-Separation, Vortex-Impingement, Flip-Flopping, Modulated Periodic, and Synchronized-Vortex-Shedding. Collecting all the numerical results, we propose a general flow pattern diagram for flows past two nearby cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use this diagram to distinguish flow patterns in the presence of two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

The rapid expansion or condensible gas such as moist air of steam gives rise to nonequilibrium condensation. As a result of irreversibility of condensation process in the supersonic cascade flow of low pressure steam turbine, the entropy of the flow is increased, and the efficiency of the turbine is decreased. In the present study, to investigate the flow of moist air in 2-dimensional cascade made as the configuration of the tip section of the last actual steam turbine moving blade, the static pressure at both sides of pressure and suction of blade are measured by static pressure taps and the distribution of Mach number on both surfaces of the blade are obtained by using the measured static pressure. Also, the flow field is visualized by a schlieren system. From the experimental results, the effects of the stagnation temperature and specific humidity on the flow properties in a 2-dimensional stationary cascade of a practical steam turbine blade are clearly identified.

Flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re=100 were numerically studied. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. It turns out that significant changes in the characteristics of flow-induced forces are noticed depending on how the two circular cylinders are positioned, resulting in quantitative changes of force coefficients on both cylinders. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose a contour diagram for drag coefficient and lift coefficient for each of the two cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use those diagrams to estimate flow-induced forces on two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

Numerical analysis on a parallel flow heat exchanger(PFHE) is performed using 2 dimensional turbulent porous modeling. This modeling can consider three-dimensional configuration of passage (flat tube with micro-channels), and the stability and accuracy of numerical results are improved. The geometrical parameters(e.g., the position of separators, inlet/outlet, and porosity of passages of a PFHE) are varied in order to examine the flow and thermal characteristics and flow distribution of the single phase multiple passages system. The flow non-uniformities along the paths of the PFHE are observed to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat exchanger. The location of inlet affects the heat transfer, and the location of outlet affects the pressure drop. The porosity with the optimum thermal performance is around 0.53.
In the present study, we designed a microfluidic flatform that generates monodisperse droplets with diameters ranging from hundreds of nanometers to several micrometers. To generate fine droplets, T-junction and flow-focusing geometry are integrated into the microfluidic channel. Relatively large aqueous droplets are generated at the upstream T-junction and transported toward the flow-focusing geometry, where each droplet is broken up into the targeted size by the action of viscous stresses. Because the droplet prior to rupture blocks the straight channel that leads to the flow-focusing geometry, it moves very slowly by the pressure difference applied between the advancing and receding regions of the moving droplet. This configuration enables very low flow rate of inner fluid and higher flow rate ratio between inner and outer fluids at the flow-focusing region. It is shown that the present microfluidic device can generate droplets with diameters about 1 micrometer size and standard deviation less than 3%.

The MPI engine becomes increasingly popular because it meets two requirements of stringent pollutant emission and the lower fuel consumption. Even though supplies the same amount of fuel to each cylinder , it is hard to precisely control the air-duel ration due to the different amount of air flowing into each cylinder. The uniformity of air-fuel ration in each cylinder is considerably affected by the plenum chamber configuration . This study is focused on experimentally analyzing the flow characteristics within the plenum chamber In the present experiment , steady and valve dynamic state flow tests are performed and the flow field inside the plenum chamber is visualized and measured by utilizing a laser sheet visualization technique and a PTV method. These measured results indicate that the flow structure in the plenum chamber is highly influenced by the plenum chamber configurations, suction flow rates, crank speeds and so on.

To provide the end-to-end service differentiation for assured services, the random early demotion and promotion (REDP) marker in the edge router at each domain boundary monitors the aggregate flow of the incoming in-profile packets and demotes in-profile packets or promotes the previously demoted in-profile packets at the aggregate flow level according to the negotiated interdomain service level agreement (SLA). The REDP marker achieves UDP fairness in demoting and promoting packets through random and early marking decisions on packets. But, TCP fairness of the REDP marker is not obvious as for UDP sources. In this paper, to improve TCP fairness of the REDP marker, we propose a modified REDP marker where we combine a dropper, meters and a token filling rate configuration component with the REDP marker. To make packet transmission rates of TCP flows more fair, at the aggregate flow level the combined dropper drops incoming excessive in-profile packets randomly with a constant probability when the token level in the leaky bucket stays in demotion region without incoming demoted in-profile packets. Considering the case where the token level cannot stay in demotion region without the prior demotion, we propose a token filling rate configuration method using traffic meters. By using the token filling rate configuration method, the modified REDP marker newly configures a token filling rate which is less than the negotiated rate determined by interdomain SLA and larger than the current input aggregate in-profile traffic rate. Then, with the newly configured token filling rate, the token level in the modified REDP marker can stay in demotion region pertinently fir the operation of the dropper to improve TCP fairness. We experiment with the modified REDP marker using ns2 simulator fur TCP sources at the general case where the token level cannot stay in demotion region without the prior demotion at the negotiated rate set as the bottleneck link bandwidth. The simulation results demonstrate that through the combined dropper with the newly configured token filling rate, the modified REDP marker also increases both aggregate in-profile throughput and link utilization in addition to TCP fairness improvement compared to the REDP marker.

Experimental tests have been done with swirl injector and helical grain configuration to increase the regression rate of hybrid rocket solid fuel. Two types of injector were designed to evaluate the swirl effect of oxidizer stream on the increase in the regression rate. Results showed Type II injector with swirl number of 3.61 induced the better regression rate than Type I injector. Meanwhile, fuels with two different pitch number of 6 and 100 were used to analyzes the flow characteristics on the enhancement of regression rate. Test with fuels of pitch 6 showed better increase in the regression rate than in the pitch 100 when no swirler was imposed. This is due to the generation of strong turbulences in the oxidizer stream along the pitch 6 configuration. However, the regression rate could be increased further in the fuel with pitch 100 than with pitch 6 when swirl flow was imposed by Type II injector. This result implied that the fuel with pitch 100 could take a role of sustainer of the imposed swirl by swirler II instead of turbulence generator.
This study was performed numerical analysis in order to analyze liquid film flow of heat exchanger tube arrangement and configuration of evaporative multi effect distillation system using medium-temperature. Simulation was accomplished the two-dimensional calculations using commercial analyses program FLUENT based on the FVM(finite volume method). Fresh water generator of this study used Shell & Tubes heat exchanger with Cu_Ni tube, configuration of tube used bare tube and corrugated tube, and arrangement of tube used in-line array and staggered array. Performance of heat exchanger through the formation of liquid film was compared and analyzed. Liquid film flow occurred that falling on heat exchanger tube wall. Result of simulation showed that liquid film thickness of in-line arrangement was found 0.57mm with bare tube and 0.67mm with corrugated tube, respectively. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement was found 0.39mm with bare tubes and 0.62mm with corrugated tubes, respectively. Liquid film thickness of corrugated tube showed thicker than bare tube, but heat transfer rates of corrugated tube showed higher than bare tube. The reason was considered that surface area of corrugated tube was wider than bare tube. And liquid film thickness of staggered arrangement showed thinner than in-line arrangement, so thermal performance of staggered arrangement showed higher than in-line arrangement.
