A Numerical Analysis on Flow Characteristic of 200HP Grade Water Jet for Small Ship (소형선박용 200마력급 Water Jet의 유동특성에 관한 수치해석)

  • Water jet propulsion system has low efficiency than screw propeller at low speed, but has been applied in high speed ship due to its better cavitation performance and high rotation capacity. In this study, a numerical analysis was conduct to understand the flow in the propulsion system of 200HP grade water jet for small ship. As the result, it could be confirmed that total pressure and force of the flow was increased through the impeller and the straight-ability of discharging flow to outlet was improved by guide vane. Also, the reliability of numerical analysis was secured by comparing peripheral velocity calculated by design values with that calculated by numerical analysis.

  • The output performance characteristics for surveyed sites were analyzed, using developed model. It consists of two main parts, the deciding flow duration characteristic of river and performance prediction model to estimate the output characteristics of small hydropower plants. As a result, It was found that the flowrate concerning with 25% of time ratio on flow duration curve can be selected to design flowrate of small hydropower plants, and the output characteristics of small hydropower plants having overflow dam are different from large scale hydropower plants.

  • The fire whirl occurring by the instability of atmosphere is a rare phenomenon, but highly destructive because it has high inhalation and lift force, caused by the rotating velocity. And it is difficult to extinguish the fire, because of increment of the spread rate with the flame height. In this study, for investigation of the flow characteristic of fire whirl for various heat release rate, numerical analysis is performed in same conditions with experiments, using the FDS which is developed at NIST. For validating of the numerical study, the results are compared with the experiment. The result shows that the relation between the characteristic length and the ratio of circulation versus the buoyancy force is $z_f$/D$^{\ast}$ = 0.304(${\Omega}/{\alpha}$)^2 - 1.334${\Omega}/{\alpha}$ + 5.516.

  • This study is investigated into the dynamic effect of the manifold configuration during the gas exchange processes using both simulation and experiment, In theoretical study on the flow analysis, the characteristic method is applied to solve the compressible unsteady flow equation, involving the several steady flow boundary conditions. In order to excute the engine experiment efficiently, a data acquisition system is configured by using A/D converter and PC. Good results which coincided experimental data with simulation output were obtained, and it shows that this simulation method can be applied to obtain the optimal design parameters in the intake and exhaust systems.

  • The present study investigated the effect of the transversal vibration on the flow characteristics for non-Newtonian fluids. The effect was tested by experiment and numerical analysis. For Newtonian fluids, both of experiment and numerical analysis results showed that mechanical vibration did not affect the flow rate. For non-Newtonian fluids, however, there was significant disagreement between experiment and numerical results. The numerical results showed a negligibly small effect of vibration on the flow rate whereas experimental results showed a significant flow rate increase associated with transversal vibration. The results implied that the increased flow rate was caused not only by imposed shear rates at the wall but also by the changes of rheological characteristics due to the transversal vibration.

  • In today's industry, the butterfly valve has been used to control a flow effectively. However, it is difficult to have the existing structural optimization using field analysis from CFD to structure analysis when the structure is influenced by fluid. Therefore, an initial model of this study is to evaluate the stability of the valve using FEM and CFD. And, it selected variable using initial analysis results. Also, it accomplished the shape optimization design using the orthogonal arrangement and characteristic function. Research result, a few experiments showed the optimal results of there dimensional structures to be multi-objective.

  • This paper describes a method developed for the simulation of ring pack lubrication characteristic in an internal combustion engine. In general, the quantity of oil supply for piston ring lubrication may be insufficient in filling the entire volume formed at the interference between the piston ring and the cylinder liner. Thus the oil starvation condition should be considered in analyzing piston ring lubrication. In order to reasonably estimate the amount of oil left over on the cylinder liner, the flow rate at the posterior portion of the interface should be calculated with an adequate boundary condition that confirms flow continuity condition. In this analysis, oil starvation and open-end boundary conditions are considered at the inlet and outlet of the piston rings. The lubrication characteristic of each piston ring is obtained by an iterative method with sequential steps. It is revealed that piston rings are operated under oil starvation in most operating cycles and the result under these conditions are quite different from that with the fully-flooded assumption.

  • Unsteady flow problems created by hydraulic transients in pipeline systems with pump are of significant importance because they can cause excessive pressure, cavitation, vibration and noise. In this paper, an analysis of transient flow for the pump pipelines is developed by means of the characteristic method. The calculated results of the program to simulate water hammer due to sudden valve closure in a simple pipeline are compared with those of the analytical method. Expecially the water hammer due to power failure in pump pipeline system with surge tank was simulated. As the results, both the upsurge and the downsurge along the pipeline are reduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to design of film-cooling ring for the small thrust rocket engine using green propellants(Hydrogen peroxide and kerosene). Cold flow test was carried out to measure the mass flow rate and atomizing characteristic. Required mass flow rate was obtained from thermal analysis of the engine, and measured flow rate 42.25g/s was in the range of permissible coolant flow rate. With the same mass flow rate, cooling ring with more hole and high velocity shows better spray pattern. The result of thermal analysis, cooling ring has enough cooling performance.
