Groundwater level hydrographs from observation wells in Jeju island clearly illustrate distinctive features of recharge showing the time-delaying and dispersive process, mainly affected by the thickness and hydrogeologic properties of the unsaturated zone. Most groundwater flow models have limitations on delineating temporal variation of recharge, although it is a major component of the groundwater flow system. Recently, a convolution model was suggested as a mathematical technique to generate time series of recharge that incorporated the time-delaying and dispersive process. A groundwater flow model was developed to simulate transient groundwater level fluctuations in Pyoseon area of Jeju island. The model used the convolution technique to simulate temporal variations of groundwater levels. By making a series of trial-and-error adjustments, transient model calibration was conducted for various input parameters of both the groundwater flow model and the convolution model. The calibrated model could simulate water level fluctuations closely coinciding with measurements from 8 observation wells in the model area. Consequently, it is expected that, in transient groundwater flow models, the convolution technique can be effectively used to generate a time series of recharge.
In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble stream in a rectangular water tank is studied. The time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 488 nm Ar-ion CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent ($\lambda_{ex}=540nm,\;\lambda_{em}=560nm$) particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed CCD camera (1280$\times$1024). To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is 3 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by time-resolved POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale recirculation resulting from the interaction between rising bubble stream and side wall is the most dominant flow structure and there are small scale vortex structures moving along with large scale recirculation flow. It is also verified that the sum of 20 modes of velocity field has about 67.4% of total turbulent energy.
The flow-field of a liquid-metal system is very important for the safety analysis and the design of the steam generator of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor. Dynamic neutron radiography (DNR) is suitable for a visualization and measurement of a liquid metal flow and a two-phase flow in a metallic duct. However, the three dimensional DNR techniques is not enough to obtain the velocity information in the wide channel up to now. In this research, a high speed DNR technique was applied to visualize the heavy liquid-metal flow field in the narrow channel with the HANARO-beam facility. The images were taken with a high frame-rate neutron radiography at 250 fps and analyzed with a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) method. The images were compared with the results of the commercial CFX code to study the feasibility of DNR technique for the measuring the heavy liquid-metal flow field. The PIV images could discern the turbulent vortex flow in the two-dimensional narrow channel.
This study presents the measurement techniques on the periodic fluctuating flow such as the discharge flow of a centrifugal impeller in unstable operating region. During rotating stall, the flow at the exit of a centrifugal compressor impeller fluctuates periodically with lower frequency than that of the blade passing. To observe the blade-to-blade flow characteristics during rotating stall, the phases of all the sampled data sets should be adjusted to those of the reference signals with two processes, in these processes, DPLEAT (Double Phase-Locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) can be used. From these measurement and data processing techniques, the characteristics not only on the blade-to-blade flow with high frequency, but also on the periodic rotating stall flow with low frequency at the centrifugal impeller exit can be clearly observed.
Internal and inlet flows of a cross-flow fan have been visualized using a particle image velocimetry(PIV) to analyze a relationship with a performance of a room air conditioner(RAC). A test model which has a geometric similarity with the real RAC has been manufactured for the experiment and the flow characteristics have been analyzed with various flow rates and inlet grill angles for the cross-flow fan. The experimental results using the PIV technique have been compared with the existing numerical results. Also, a location and movement of an eccentric vortex which can affect the performance and noise of the RAC has been investigated by the PIV with various flow rates and inlet grill angles.

An active flow control technique using blowing and distributed suction on low Reynolds airfoil is investigated. Simultaneous blowing and distributed suction can recirculate the jet flow mass, and reduce the penalty to propulsion system due to avoiding dumping the jet mass flow. Energy is injected into main flow by blowing on the suction surface, and the low energy boundary flow mass is removed by distributed suction, thus the flow separation can be successfully suppressed. Aerodynamic lift to drag ratio is improved significantly using the flow control technique, and the energy consumption is quite low.
A Combination Random Flow Generation (CRFG) technique for obtaining the fluctuating inflow boundary conditions for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is proposed. The CRFG technique was developed by combining the typical RFG technique with a novel calculation of k and ${\varepsilon}$ to estimate the length- and time-scales (l, ${\tau}$) of the target fluctuating turbulence field used as the inflow boundary conditions. Through comparatively analyzing the CRFG technique and other existing numerical/experimental results, the CRFG technique was verified for the generation of turbulent wind velocity fields with prescribed turbulent statistics. Using the turbulent velocity fluctuations generated by the CRFG technique, a series of LESs were conducted to investigate the wind flow around S-, R-, L- and U-shaped building models. As the pressures of the models were also measured in wind tunnel tests, the validity of the LES, and the effectiveness of the inflow boundary generated by the CRFG techniques were evaluated through comparing the simulation results to the wind tunnel measurements. The comparison showed that the LES accurately and reliably simulates the wind-induced pressure distributions on the building surfaces, which indirectly validates the CRFG technique in generating realistic fluctuating wind velocities for use in the LES. In addition to the pressure distribution, the LES results were investigated in terms of wind velocity profiles around the building models to reveal the wind flow dynamics around bluff bodies. The LES results quantitatively showed the decay of the bluff body influence when the flow moves away from the building model.
Low flow affects various fields such as river water supply management and planning, and irrigation water. A sufficient period of flow data is required to calculate the Flow Duration Curve. However, in order to calculate the Flow Duration Curve, it is essential to secure flow data for more than 30 years. However, in the case of rivers below the national river unit, there is no long-term flow data or there are observed data missing for a certain period in the middle, so there is a limit to calculating the Flow Duration Curve for each river. In the past, statistical-based methods such as Multiple Regression Analysis and ARIMA models were used to predict sulfur in the unmeasured watershed, but recently, the demand for machine learning and deep learning models is increasing. Therefore, in this study, we present the DNN technique, which is a machine learning technique that fits the latest paradigm. The DNN technique is a method that compensates for the shortcomings of the ANN technique, such as difficult to find optimal parameter values in the learning process and slow learning time. Therefore, in this study, the Flow Duration Curve applicable to the unmeasured watershed is calculated using the DNN model. First, the factors affecting the Flow Duration Curve were collected and statistically significant variables were selected through multicollinearity analysis between the factors, and input data were built into the machine learning model. The effectiveness of machine learning techniques was reviewed through statistical verification.
In this paper, ways of improving the performances of roundabouts under the assumption that the Advanced Vehicle System is proposed. The situation on a road contains uncertainty and complexity caused by different vehicles having different directions and time-varying traffic flow. This sort of system with high uncertainty is called Multi Agent System (MAS). The MAS is a collective system, including numbers of agents and performs high diversity of the configuration as well as it has nonlinear property and complexity. Hence it is difficult to analyze and control the multi-agent system. A roundabout can be considered as an MAS with numbers of moving vehicles. So it must be difficult to use a centralized control technique to all vehicles in an intersection. Therefore, to improve the performances of roundabouts, multi-agents flow control algorithm for vehicles in Roundabouts using 'self-organization' technique is proposed.
