Prediction of Fully Developed Turbulent Flow in a Square Duct with Nonlinear Low-Reynolds-Number κ-ε Models (비선형 저레이놀즈수 κ-ε 난류모델에 따른 정사각형 덕트내 완전 발달된 난류유동 예측)

  • Fully developed turbulent flow in a square duct is numerically predicted with two nonlinear low-Reynolds-number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ models. Typical predicted quantities such as axial and secondary velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses are compared in detail with each other. It is found that the nonlinear low-Reynolds-number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model adopted in a commercial code is unable to predict accurately duct flows involving turbulence-driven secondary motion with the prediction level of secondary flows one order less than that of the experiment.

  • Leakage reduction through annular type labyrinth seals of steam turbine is necessary for enhancing their efficiency and the precise prediction method of seal leakage is needed. In this study, numerical analysis for leakage prediction of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal has been carried out using FLUENT 6 which is commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code based on FVM (Finite Volume Method) and SIMPLE algorism. The present CFD results are verified with the theoretical analysis based on Bulk-flow concept which has been mainly used in predicting seal leakage. Comparing with the result of Bulk-flow model analysis, the leakage result of CFD analysis shows good agreement within 7.1% error.

  • In this paper, we construct a prototype model for city data prediction by using time series data of floating population, and use machine learning to analyze urban data of complex structure. A correlation prediction model was constructed using three of the 10 data (total flow population, male flow population, and Monday flow population), and the result was compared with the actual data. The results of the accuracy were evaluated. The results of this study show that the predicted model of the floating population predicts the correlation between the predicted floating population and the current state of commerce. It is expected that it will help efficient and objective design in the planning stages of architecture, landscape, and urban areas such as tree environment design and layout of trails. Also, it is expected that the dynamic population prediction using multivariate time series data and collected location data will be able to perform integrated simulation with time series data of various fields.

  • This paper presents a numerical prediction of the transient hydraulic loads acting on the tubes and external supports of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) steam generator (SG) during blowdown following a sudden feedwater line break (FWLB). A simplified SG model was used to easily demonstrate the prediction. The blowdown discharge flow was treated as a flashing flow to realistically simulate the transient flow fields inside the SG and the connected broken feedwater pipe. The effects of the SG initial pressure or the broken feedwater pipe length on the intensities or magnitudes of transient hydraulic loads were investigated. Then predictions of the decompression pressure wave-induced impulsive pressure differential loads on SG tubes and the transient blowdown loads on SG external supports were demonstrated and the general aspects of transient responses of such transient hydraulic loads to the FWLB were discussed.

Pixel level prediction of dynamic pressure distribution on hull surface based on convolutional neural network (합성곱 신경망 기반 선체 표면 압력 분포의 픽셀 수준 예측)

  • In these days, the rapid development in prediction technology using artificial intelligent is being applied in a variety of engineering fields. Especially, dimensionality reduction technologies such as autoencoder and convolutional neural network have enabled the classification and regression of high-dimensional data. In particular, pixel level prediction technology enables semantic segmentation (fine-grained classification), or physical value prediction for each pixel such as depth or surface normal estimation. In this study, the pressure distribution of the ship's surface was estimated at the pixel level based on the artificial neural network. First, a potential flow analysis was performed on the hull form data generated by transforming the baseline hull form data to construct 429 datasets for learning. Thereafter, a neural network with a U-shape structure was configured to learn the pressure value at the node position of the pretreated hull form. As a result, for the hull form included in training set, it was confirmed that the neural network can make a good prediction for pressure distribution. But in case of container ship, which is not included and have different characteristics, the network couldn't give a reasonable result.

  • A coupled approach is proposed for the prediction of sheet profile in sheet casting process, which combines one-dimensional analytical method on planar elongational flow region and three-dimensional numerical method on the other region. The strategy is constructed from the observations that the flow domain of sheet casting process can be separated into two parts based old the flow kinematics. The flow field in the central region of sheet, over which the planar elongational flow dominates, is possibly replaced by one-dimensional analytical solution. Then only a partial flow domain near the edge region of sheet, where the flow kinematics cannot be described by the planar elongational flow itself, requires three-dimensional numerical simulation. Good agreement is observed between the coupled approach developed in this study and the full three-dimensional numerical simulation previously developed and reported by the authors. This coupled approach may have provided flexibility with low costs to accommodate a wide range of die sizes in sheet casting process.

  • Many works on the temperature distribution of power apparatus have usually done by coupled magneto-thermal analysis. Such a method can not consider the internal gas or oil flow in the power apparatus such as gas insulated switchgear, GIS bus bar, and power transformer. Moreover it can not show the internal temperature distribution of the power apparatus exactly. This paper proposes a coupled magneto-thermal-flow analysis considering Navier-Stokes equations. The convection heat transfer coefficient is calculated analytically by applying Nusselt number for natural convection and is applied to the boundary condition of proposed method. Temperature distribution of the GIS bus bar model considering thermal flow is obtained by the proposed method and shows good agreement with the experimental data.

Flow Characteristics of Gaseous Leak flows in Narrow Cracks

  • The prediction for gaseous leak flows through a narrow crack is important for a leak-before-break (LBB) analysis. Therefore, the methodology to obtain the flow characteristics of gaseous leak flow in a narrow crack for the wide range by using the product of friction factor and Reynolds number correlations (fRe) for a micro-channel is developed and presented. The correlation applied here was proposed by the previous study. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was employed to integrate the nonlinear ordinary differential equation for the pressure and the regular-Falsi method was also employed to find the inlet Mach number. A narrow crack whose opening displacement ranges from 10 to $100{\mu}m$ with a crack length in the range from 2 to 200mm was chosen for sample prediction. The present results are compared with both numerical simulation results and available experimental measurements. The results are in excellent agreement with them. The leak flow rate can be approximately predicted by using proposed methodology.

  • The purpose of this paper was to address the methodology of the air flow measurement using duct mach number that was considered area-weighed average obtained by total pressure and temperature measured at engine inlet duct. Without installing boundary rake, the prediction of air flow measurement was discussed. Actual air flow measurement and pressure value using pressure loss through inlet seal were described to improve the reliability and operability of altitude engine test facility.

  • In this study, numerical simulations of transonic aircraft configurations are performed with various turbulence models and the effect of turbulence models on flow separation are examined. A three-dimensional RANS code and three turbulence models are used for the study. The turbulence models incorporated to the code include Menter's ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model, Coakley's $q-{\omega}$, and Huang and Coakley's ${\kappa}-{\omega}$, model. Using the code, numerical simulations of DLR-F6 configurations obtained from AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop are conducted. Flow separations on the wing-body juncture and the wing lower surface near pylon are observed. and flow features of the regions are compared with experimental data and other numerical results.
