A Numerical Study of the Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of the Two-Dimensional Turbulent Impingement Jet with a Confinement Plate (제한면을 가지는 이차원 난류 충돌젯트의 유동 및 열전달 특성의 수치적 연구)

  • A numerical study of the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of the two-dimensional impingement jet with a confinement plate has been carried out. The fluid flow was calculated by solving the full Navier-Stokes equation. In doing that, the well known SIMPLER algorithm was used and the trouble making convection term was discretized according to QUICKER scheme. The energy equation was simply solved by using the SOR method. For the Reynolds number of 10000, two channel heights, say 1.5 and 3.0 times the jet exit width, and two thermal boundary conditions constant wall temperature and constant wall heat flux were considered. Discrete heat sources were flush mounted along the impingement plate at a distance of 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, times the jet exit width from the stagnation point. The length of each heat source is 4 times the jet exit width long. The Nusselt number averaged over each heat source was compared with experiment. Comparison shows that both calculations and experiment have the secondary peak of Nusselt number at downstream of stagnation point, even though there is a little quantitative difference in between. The difference is believed due to abscure thermal boundary condition in experiment and also accuracy of turbulence model used. The secondary peak is shown to be caused by rigorous turbulent flow motion generated as the wall jet flow is retarded and developes into the channel flow without flow reversal.

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damange, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction stream line-inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes operation of experience and numerical analysis composed similar condition with real high pressure feedwater heater. This study applied squared, curved and new type impingement baffle plates to feedwater heater same as previous study. In addition, it shows difference of pressure distribution and value between single phase and two phase based on experience and numerical analysis.

  • This paper describes thermal flow characteristic in various pipelines: straight pipeline and curved pipeline. In the Arctic and ocean area, pipelines are exposed to a extremely low temperature ($0{\sim}-40^{\circ}C$). In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid. Also, due to freezing of water droplet, impingement erosion is expected in the curved pipeline. The stability of the pipelines can be influenced by impingement erosion. In this paper, multi-phase and multi-species analysis was introduced to analyze the flow characteristics and impingement erosion of Arctic and ocean pipelines.

Flow and Heat/Mass Transfer Characteristics of Arrays of Impingement Jets with Effusion Holes (유출홀이 설치된 배열 충돌제트의 유동 및 열전달 특성)

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate heat/mass transfer characteristics on a target plate fur arrays of circular impingement jets with and without effusion holes. A naphthalene sublimation method is employed to determine local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the target plate. The effusion holes are located at the center of four injection holes in the injection plate where the spent air is discharged through the effusion hole after impingement on the target plate. For the array jet impingement without effusion holes, the array jets are injected into the crossflow formed by upstream spent air because the impinged jets must flow to the open exit. For small gap distances, heat/mass transfer coefficients without effusion holes are very non-uniform due to crossflow effects and re-entrainments of spent air. However, uniform distributions and enhanced values of heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained by installing the effusion holes. For large gap distances, the crossflow has little influence on heat/mass transfer characteristics on the target palate due to the large cross-sectional open area between the injection and target plates. Therefore, the distributions and levels of heat/mass transfer coefficients are almost the same for both cases.

  • The impingement of the fuel spray on the wall within the combustion chamber in compact high-pressure injection engines and on the intake port wall in port-fuel-inje- ction type engines is unavoidable. It is important to understand the characteristics of impinging spray because it influences on the rate of fuel evaporation and droplet distrib- ution etc. In this study, the numerical study for the characteristics of spray/wall interaction is performed to test the applicability and reliability of spray/wall impingement models. The impingement models used are stick model, reflect model, jet model and Watkins and Park's model. The head of wall-jet eminating radilly outward from the spray impingement site contains a vortex. Small droplets are deflected away from the wall by the stagnation flow field and the gas wall-jet flow. While the larger droplets with correspondingly higher momentum are impinged on the wall surface and them are moved along the wall and are rolled up by wall-jet vortex. Using the Watkins and Park's model the predicted results show the most reasonable trend. The rate of increase of spread and the height of the developing wall-spray is predicted to decrease with increased ambient pressure(gas density).

This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data on effect of geometry of the impingement baffle plate on the shell wall thinning. Additionally, a new type impingement baffle plate was installed above the impingement baffle plate in the feedwater heater and then the numerical and experimental study were performed in the same progress.

  • In port fuel injection system of SI engines, injected fuel is impinged onto the surface of intake valves and port-wall, and then formed the wall flow under the cold start operation. Wall flows entrained into the cylinder result in the unsteady and nonuniform mixture formation. Therefore, the spray impingement to the wall is considered as having negative influences such as lowering combustion efficiency and causing unburned hydrocarbon emissions. This study investigates the spray characteristics of the wall impinging air-assist spray in suction air flow. A PDPA was used to analyze the flow characteristics under the different conditions such as impingement angle and supplied air. Experimental data concerning the impinging sprays has been obtained in the vicinity of the wall. Measured droplets divided into the pre-impinging droplets which denote as the positive normal velocities and post-impinging droplets that describe as the negative normal velocities for the suction flow. Their velocities, size distributions and SMD are comparatively analyzed before and after the impingement.

  • In this paper, confined multiple slot jet impingement with exhaust ports is investigated numerically. A flow cell, defined as volume sectioned by the impingement and confinement surfaces and the centerlines of adjacent nozzle and exhaust port, is chosen for computational domain. The effects of Reynolds number and geometrical parameters on the heat transfer performance and the flow characteristics are studied. For turbulence, the Abe-Kondoh-Nagano version of the low-Reynolds k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed. The results showed that the local Nusselt number distribution is shifted down and show poor heat transfer performance for small Reynolds number and small ratio of the lateral and axial length of flow cell. The rest of range, except the range of the shift phenomenon, can be classified into three groups by heat transfer characteristics.

  • This study deals with jet impingement, which is extensively used in the process industries to achieve intense heating, cooling or drying rates and also widely employed as a test flow for turbulent models due to its complex flow configuration, on a flat plate by numerical methods. In this calculation, the finite volume method was employed to solve the Navier-stokes equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. To get a better understanding for the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of the turbulent jet impingements, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model was adapted and compared with the experimental data and the result of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical calculations were carried out with various flow rates, nozzle to plate distances. In the case of the axisymmetric jet impingement on a flat plate, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model showed better agreement with the experimental data than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model in the prediction of the mean velocity profiles, the turbulent velocity profiles. the turbulent shear stress and the heat transfer rate. The highest heat transfer rate can be obtained when the impingement occurs within the potential core..

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-impingement jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. To study the flow characteristics especially in the jet flow region, three different distributions of mass flow rate at 5-jet exits were assumed. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) A periodical fully developed flow was observed from the third protrusion. This was also observed from previous experimentally by Whidden at al. The Nessult number at the protrusion surface increased mildly as going downstream. 2) The low Reynolds number turbulence model of Launder and Sharma was found to be adequate for the prediction of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of two dimensional multi-jet configuration. 3) The Nusselt number at the protrusion surface was nearly proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number.
