A study on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was made by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Assuming a smallness of external forcing to oscillate the container, it was investigated a linear sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid utilizing asymptotic analysis by Taylor-series expansion as a small parameter Re (≪1) in which Re denotes Reynolds number. The theory predict that, during all cycles of sloshing, a linear shape of free surface will prevail in a bulk zone and it has confirmed in experiment. The relevance of perfect slip boundary condition, adopted in theoretical approach, to the bulk zone flow at the container wall was tested in experiment. It is found that quasi-steady coated thin film, which makes a lubricant layer between bulk flow and solid wall, is generated on the wall and the film makes a role to perfect slip boundary condition.

It is essential for the accurate time-domain prediction of broadband noise due to turbulence-cascade interaction to develop inflow/outflow boundary conditions to satisfy the following three requirements: to maintain the back ground mean flow, to nonreflect the outgoing disturbances and to generate the specified input gust. The preceding study(1) showed that Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) boundary condition was successfully applied to absorb the outgoing disturbances and to generate the specified gust in the time-domain computations of broadband noise due to interaction of incident gust with a cascade of flat-plates. In present study, PML boundary condition is extended in order to predict steady mean flow that is needed for the computation of noise due to interaction of incident gust with a cascade of airfoils. PML boundary condition is originally designed to absorb flow disturbances superimposed on the steady meanflow in the buffer zone. However, the steady meanflow must be computed before PML boundary condition is applied on the flow computation. In the present paper, PML equations are extended by introducing source term to maintain desired mean flow conditions. The extended boundary condition is applied to the benchmark problem where the meanflow around a cascade of airfoils is predicted. These illustrative computations reveal that the extended PML equations can effectively provide and maintain the target meanflow.

The inlet boundary condition of computations about the supersonic turbine flow is commonly applied as far-field inlet boundary condition with specified velocity. However, the inflow condition of supersonic turbine is sometimes affected by the shocks or expansion waves propagated from leading edges of blade. These shocks and expansion waves alter the inlet boundary condition. In this case, the inlet boundary condition can not be specified Therefore, in this paper, numerical analyses for three different inlet conditions - fa-field inlet boundary condition, inlet boundary condition with a linear nozzle and inlet boundary condition with a converging-diverging nozzle - have been performed and compared with experimental results to solve the problem. It is found that the inlet condition with a linear nozzle or a converging-diverging nozzle can prevent changing of inlet boundary condition, and thus predict more accurately the supersonic flow within turbine cascade than a far-field inlet boundary condition does.

Data centers have been built with spread of cloud computing. Further, electric power consumption of it is growing rapidly. High power cooling small-sized fans; high pressure and large flow rate small-sized fan, are used for servers in the data centers and there is a strong demand to increase power of it because of increase of quantity of heat from the servers. Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of high power cooling fans to meet the demand for high power. There is a limitation of space for servers and geometrical restriction for cooling fans because spokes to support fan motors, electrical power cables and so on should be installed in the cooling fans. It is important to clarify complicated internal flow condition and influence of a geometric shape of the cooling fans on performance to achieve high performance of the cooling fans. In the present paper, the performance and the flow condition of the high power contra-rotating small-sized axial fan with a 40mm square casing are shown by experimental and numerical results. Furthermore, influence of the geometrical shape of the small-sized cooling fan on the internal flow condition is clarified and design guideline to improve the performance is discussed.
For rarefied gas flow regimes, physical phenomena such as velocity slip and temperature jump occur on the solid body surface. To predict these phenomena accurately, either the Navier-Stokes solver with a slip boundary condition or the direct simulation Monte Carlo method should be used. In the present study, flow simulations of a wedge were conducted in Mach-10 flow of argon gas for several different flow regimes using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver with the Maxwell slip boundary condition. The results of the simulations were compared with those of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to assess the present method. It was found that the values of the velocity slip and the temperature jump predicted increase as the Knudsen number increases. Also, the results are comparatively reasonable up to the Knudsen number of 0.05.

The engine-out flow is highly transient and hot, and may place tremendous thermal and inertial loads on a closed-coupled catalyst. Therefore, time-dependent and detailed flow and thermal field simulation may be crucial. The aim of this study is to develop combined chemical reaction and multi-dimensional fluid dynamic mathematical model and to study the effect of unsteady pulsating thermal and flow characteristics on thermal reliability of closed-coupled catalyst. The effect of cell density on the conversion performance under real running condition is also investigated. Unlike previous studies, the present study focuses on coupling between the problems of pulsating flow pattern and catalyst thermal response and conversion efficiency. The results are expressed in terms of temporal evolution of flow, pollutant and temperature distribution as well as transient characteristics of conversion efficiency. Fundamental understanding of the flow and thermal phenomena of closed-coupled catalyst under real running condition is presented. It is shown that instants of significantly low values of flow uniformity and conversion efficiency exist during exhaust blowdown and the temporal varaition of flow uniformity is very similar in pattern to one of conversion efficiency. It is also found that the location of hot spot in monolith is directly affected by transient flow pattern in closed-coupled catalyst.
For proton exchange membrane fuel cell, it is very important to design the flow channel on separation plate optimally to maximize the current density at same electrochemical reaction surface and reduce the concentration polarization occurred at high current density. In this paper, three dimensional computation model including anode and cathode domain together was developed to examine effects of flow patterns and operation conditions such as humidity and operating temperature on performance of fuel cell. Results show that voltage at counter flow condition is higher than that at coflow condition in parallel and interdigitated flow pattern. And fuel cell with interdigitated flow pattern which has better mass transport by convection flow through gas diffusion layer has higher performance than with parallel flow pattern but its pressure drop is increased such that the trade off between performance and pressure drop should be considered for selection of flow pattern of fuel cell.

The frequency characteristics in an axial flow fan operating at a design and three off-design operating conditions have been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation of a tip leakage vortex and a wake flow. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.

Mini centrifugal pumps having a diameter smaller than 100mm are employed in many fields; automobile radiator pump, ventricular assist pump, cooling pump for electric devices and so on. Further, the needs for mini centrifugal pumps would become larger with the increase of the application of it for electrical machines. It is desirable that the mini centrifugal pump design be as simple as possible as precise manufacturing is required. But the design method for the mini centrifugal pump is not established because the internal flow condition for these small-sized fluid machines is not clarified and conventional theory is not suitable for small-sized pumps. Therefore, we started research on the mini centrifugal pump for the purpose of development of high performance mini centrifugal pumps with simple structure. Three types of rotors with different outlet angles are prepared for an experiment. The performance tests are conducted with these rotors in order to investigate the effect of the outlet angle on performance and internal flow condition of mini centrifugal pumps. In addition to that, the blade thickness is changed because blockage effect in the mini centrifugal pump becomes relatively larger than that of conventional pumps. On the other hand, a three dimensional steady numerical flow analysis is conducted with the commercial code (ANSYS-Fluent) to investigate the internal flow condition. It is clarified from the experimental results that head of the mini centrifugal pump increases according to the increase of the blade outlet angle and the decrease of the blade thickness. In the present paper, the performance of the mini centrifugal pump is shown and the internal flow condition is clarified with the results of the experiment and the numerical flow analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the blade outlet angle and the blade thickness on the performance are investigated and the internal flow of each type of rotor is clarified by the numerical analysis results.
