This experiment was conducted to see the effect of repeated application of IBP granular formulation(17%, 0,0-diisopropyl-S-benzyl thiophosphate) on the biodegradation of IBP and diazinon〔0,0-diethyl 0-(2-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl) phosphorothioate〕 in silt loam soil with 2.1% organic matter under flooded condition. The persistence of IBP in the soil was shortened by increasing the frequencies of application of the chemical. Enhanced degradation ability in the soil caused by repeated application of IBP was prolonged about 53 days, while the ability did not influence diazinon persistence in the soil. The half-lives of IBP in sterilized soil autoclaved at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes were about 3 times longer than those in viable soil, suggesting that microbial process was a major factor for IBP degradation in the soil. The total colony number of soil microbes showed little difference between the soils with and without repeated application of IBP. A possible concern of specific soil microorganisms on the pesticide degradation in soil was discussed.
Some of the remarkable accomplishments mentioned in the special lecture recalling 38 years of my research on the development of herbicides can be summarized as follows; 1) The physiology, movement in the soil, and decomposition and/or inactivation of the phenoxy and other herbicides by the invention of the Raphanus test were elucidated. And these findings led to the establishment of the theory of herbicidal treatment layer with the result of the origination of the application of PCP in flooded lowland paddy, which opened new era of soil application of herbicides in lowland paddy. 2) The granulation of herbicides for lowland paddy including PCP urea was developed. 3) The fact that propanil has generic selectivity in gramineae was found. And propanil was distributed in rice growing regions of the world. In addition, satanil for upland and propanil/NAC for flooded lowland paddy, propanil mixtures, were developed. 4) 15 kinds of new herbicides derived from plant hormones developed in my laboratory were develop ed, and the research trends in the future were presented.
This study investigated the mobility of inorganic elements (As, Cd, Pb, and Zn) that existed as acid extractable and reducible forms in flooded soils with a pot experiment involving rice cultivation. In general, it is known that soil inorganic elements that existed as an acid extractable form which includes exchangeable, carbonates, non-specifically sorbed, and specifically sorbed have mobility. However, the result of the experiment revealed that each inorganic elements of rice roots grown from flooded soils had different characteristics. The concentrations of Arsenic existed as both forms and the concentrations of cadmium and lead existed as a reducible form in the soils showed a high causal relationship with the concentrations of those elements in the roots of rice plants. The concentrations of zinc, an essential plant element, didn't show a causal relationship. Therefore it is necessary to consider the soil's environmental characteristics such as drained/flooded condition, oxidation/reduction condition, etc. for the mobility assessment of inorganic elements. The concentrations of the reducible form of arsenic, cadmium, and lead in flooded environment such as a paddy field should be also considered because the mobility of these elements combined with Fe/Mn increases in the reduction condition.
The objective of this research was to examine the effect of ammonium thiosulfate(ATS) on urease activity and on biological and chemical properties of flooded paddy soil especially having high organic matter content by comparing with the effect of sodium thiosulfate(STS). The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The hydrolysis of urea was inhibited at 3 and 5 days after treatment of thiosulfate(ATS and STS) +glucose and thiosulfate only, respectively. The inhibitory effect of ATS on urea hydrolysis was slightly lower than that of STS in glusoce-added soils, but when the glucose was not added, the effects of ATS and STS were not different significantly. 2. The soil pH and Eh was lowered by 0.3~0.5 units and 30~120 mV, respectively, when incubated flooded soil with ATS and glucose at $25^{\circ}C$. 3. Soil respiration rate in/flooded soil was increased by 10~70% with the treatment of ATS during the 20 day experimental period. 4. The contents of acetic and butyric acid in thiosulfate treatment soil was below $10{\mu}g/g$, which was lower than that($220.3{\mu}g/g$) of critical growth inhibition of rice.
The rate and extent of decomposition of rice straw and compost in an acid sulfate soil amended with urea and lime and incubated under aerobic and anaerobic(flooded) conditions were investigated in the laboratory. Results are summarized as follows: 1. The rate of compost(alone) decomposition in a flooded soil was more than twice as high as all other treatments, which included rice straw+urea, rice straw+lime, rice straw (alone), and compost+lime. Lime appeared to suppress the decomposition of compost in a flooded soil but actually enhanced its decomposition under aerobic conditions. 2. Compost decomposition in both anaerobic and aerobic environments was characterized by single maximum peak rates of $CO_2$ evolution that were reached soon after the start of incubation. 3. Both urea and lime greatly increased the rate and extent of rice straw decomposition in the soil when incubated aerobically, although urea had a greater effect than did liming. Decomposition rates were characterized by the appearance of two maximum peak rates, a greater primary peak and a smaller secondary peak. 4. The percent decomposition of rice straw in soil incubated aerobically was approximately half (10.8%) that of compost(23.1%). However, percent decomposition of these substrates in soil amended with lime was essentially the same; i.e., rice straw+lime (29.4%) and compost+lime(31.6%). 5. There is a need to investigate the possible interaction between the addition of lime (pH) and supplemental nitrogen applied to acid sulfate soils and how this interaction might affect the decomposition of organic wastes and residues.
The effects of soil environmental conditions on the degradation rates of fenitrothion(O-O-dimethyl O-4-nitro-m-tolyl phosphorothioate) in soils under flooded conditions were examined in the laboratory. Fenitrothion was degraded rapidly and the half life period was within 4 days. Furthermore the degradation was mere rapid under flooded conditions than under upland conditions. The decomposition rate was varied with soils and soil temperatures. Fenitrothion degraded more slowly at 30ppm than at l0ppm. Repeated applications of fenitrothion in soils accelerated the degradation rates. The degradation remarkably increased with amendment of rice straw. However, degradation rates ,were virtually unaffected by the addition of the mixed-fertilizer, the fungicide IBP and the herbicide butachlor. The population of fenitrothion-degrading microbes, which were counted by MPN method, always corresponded with the degradation rates in the soils.
To mitigate the methane emission from rice paddy fields, effects of nitrogen fertilizers source and cultural patterns were evaluated on silty loam soils. And a pot experiment was carried out to find out the effects of nitrogen fertilizers on soil pH, Eh, sulfate concentration of soil water in flooded soil. In transplanting cultivation, the total methane emission depending on fertilizers was $32.9gm^{-2}$ for urea ; $30.3gm^{-2}$ for ammonium sulfate ; $26.4gm^{-2}$ for coated urea. Methane emitted in direct seeding on dry soil was $24.7gm^{-2}$ for urea ; $16.7gm^{-2}$ for ammonium sulfate : and $22.8gm^{-2}$ for coated urea. Thus, the methane emission rate of direct seeding on dry soil was 29.7% lower than transplanting. According to the nitrogen fertilizers, the methane emission rate by ammonium sulfate and coated urea were reduced 18.4 and 15.9% in comparison with urea, respectively. In pot experiments, pH in flooded soils depending on nitrogen fertilizers dereased in order of urea > coated $urea{\fallingdotseq}no$ fertilizer > ammonium sulfate and the order was coincided with that of total $CH_4$ emission from flooded soil. Soil Eh was highest in ammonium sulfate application followed by coated urea, no fertilizer, urea. And sulfate concentrations of soil water were in order of ammonium sulfate > coated urea > urea > no fertilizer.
The experiment was conducted to clarify irrigation requirement and percolation rate in rice paddy. The four rice cultural system of no-tin, till, transplanting, and direct seeding condition were treated in the lysimeter filled with sandy loam soil. The amounts of irrigation and soil percolation were measured daily, and irrigation requirement was estimated. The daily percolation was 19.5 l/$\textrm{m}^2$ in no-till direct seeding on flooded paddy surface, 17.4 l/$\textrm{m}^2$ in both of till-direct seeding on flooded surface and no-till transplanting, and 15.2 l/$\textrm{m}^2$ in transplanting plot. This is equivalent to 19.5, 17.4, and 15.2 mm per day, respectively. Highest irrigation requirement was 3,770 l/$\textrm{m}^2$ in no-till direct seeding plots. Others were 3,249, 2,577, and 2,321 l/$\textrm{m}^2$ in till-direct seeding, no-till transplanting and transplanting plot, respectively. The estimated irrigation requirement of no-till transplanting, till-direct seeding and no-till direct seeding was increased by 11, 37, and 59% compared to till-transplanting plot. Percolation rate of no-till transplanting, till direct seeding and no-till direct seeding was increased by 12%, 40%, and 66%, respectively compared to the till-transplanting plot. The percolation rate in paddy soil was increased greatly after reproductive stage of rice.
Carbofuran was incubated for four weeks in three differenf types of paddy soil samples at 25$\circ$C. The soil samples prepared in the present study were as follows: control soil, 3% cellulose added soil and 10% cellulose added soil. The degradation rate of carbofuran significantly decreased by the addition of cellulose to soil(p<0.05). The initial pH of soils was 5.0. After incubation for four weeks, the pH of 10% cellulose added soil sample was lower than those of control soil and 3% cellulose added soil. According to increased organic carbon content of the soil, redox potentials of soils decreased. The decreased degradation rate of carbofuran in 10% cellulose added soil was related to the highly negative redox potentials in contrast with the oxidised conditions of control soil and 3% cellulose added soil.
One of the disadvantages of flooding treatment for desalting from soils is that salts move to deep soils after flooding and at the end reaccumulate at the soil surface through capillary movements. This study was carried out to remove salts from soils in plastic film houses by a modified flooding method, drainage after flooding. The method successfully removed salts at the soil surface and salts did not move to the deep soil. Drained water containing N, P and K could be reused as fertilizer. By applying small amount of MgO, turbidity of water flooded decreased in 30 min by 95%. Struvite should be formed since the flooded water contain ammonia and phosphorous and their concentrations were decreased. This could be utilized as fertilizer which provides a slow-release source of phosphorus, magnesium and nitrogen that features low inherent water solubility.
