  • Clay sedimentation has been widely analyzed for its application in a variety of geotechnical constructions such as mine tailing, artificial islands, dredging, and reclamation. Chemical flocculants such as aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3), ferric chloride (FeCl3), and ferric sulfate (Fe(SO4)3), have been adopted to accelerate the settling behaviors of clays. As an alternative clay flocculant with natural origin, this study investigated the settling of xanthan gum-treated kaolinite suspension in deionized water. The sedimentation of kaolinite in solutions of xanthan gum biopolymer (0%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% in a clay mass) was measured until the sediment height was stabilized. Kaolinite was aggregated by xanthan gum via a direct electrical interaction between the negatively charged xanthan gum molecules and positively charged edge surface and via hydrogen bonding with kaolinite particles. The results revealed that the xanthan gum initially bound kaolinite aggregates, thereby forming larger floc sizes. Owing to their greater floc size, the aggregated kaolinite flocs induced by xanthan gum settled faster than the untreated kaolinite. Additionally, X-ray computed tomography images collected at various depths from the bottom demonstrated that the xanthan gum-induced aggregation resulted in denser sediment deposition. The findings of this study could inspire further efforts to accelerate the settling of kaolinite clays by adding xanthan gum.

  • The mean velocity gradient, G, has been used as a principal design and operation parameter for flocculation unit. This paper questions that significance. The physical and qualitative meaning of collision efficiency factors of each transport mechanism (Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation) are reviewed. The overall collision frequency function is calculated by summing up the collision frequency function of each mechanism. In the collision of two particles of different size, a diagram showing the dominant region in which each mechanism is important is developed and the meaning of the diagram is discussed. The primary ramification of this curvilinear, heterodisperse approach is that G is found to be not nearly so important. Previous experimental work in which the role of G has been examined is reviewed in light of this finding.

  • Sedimentation characteristics such as SS, $BOD_5$, COD removal efficiency of waste water in the toilet paper mill using milk carton were examined. Optimum dosage of coagulant, rapid mixing time and slow mixing time were determined by turbidity, SS, COD, $BOD_5$ and then equation for treatment efficiency was suggested. Mechanical strength of floc was determined by turbidity. For the coagulant, polyacrylamide (PAM) is more efficient for removing pollution than the aluminium sulfate. Effective mixing ratios of PAM and aluminum sulfate to remove pollution are 70:30 and 30:70. The lowest turbidity was showed when rapid mixing at 300 rpm after coagulant injection was applied. That which indicates the highest point of flocs mechanical strength.

  • The floc strength of Escherichia coli was enhanced by adding water soluble polymer flocculants (BPA-5020 and BPA-5000) to the particulate flocculant (BPA-1000) as indicated by the increase in the shear index. The shear index of the E. coli flocs increased from 0.39 with the particulate flocculant alone to 0.94 with the particulate flocculant in conjunction with the water soluble polymer flocculant. In addition, the sedimentation rate of flocs was higher and the sedimented volume of flocs was smaller when the particulate flocculant was used with the water soluble polymer flocculant. When E. coli was flocculated first with the water soluble flocculant and the particulate flocculant was added later into the E. coli flocs formed, the sedimentation rate of the flocs was greater than that of any other combination. The shear index of the flocs was, however, independent of the sequence of the flocculant addition.

  • The kinetics of flocculation of heterodisperse suspension like those in water treatment plants and natural water system are usually described by the Smoluchowski equation, which incorporates collision frequency functions for particle collisions by Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation. These collisionfrequeney functions have been based on a rectilinear view of collisions, i.e., one that ignores short-range forces and changes in fluid motion as particles approach one another. In this research, a curvilinear approach, i.e., one that accounts for hydrodynamic forces and particle interaction in the collision of two different size particles is developed. Collision efficiency factors of each mechanism can be calculated by trajectory analysis (fluid shear and differential sedimentation) or the solution of diffusion equation (Brownian motion). The results are presented as a set of corrections to the rectilinear collision frequency functions for each mechanism.

  • Rheological properties of ordinary portland cement (OPC) containing metakaoline (MK), granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PCA) were investigated using a mini-slump test, sedimentation test and viscometer. Fluidity of cement pastes containing MK (OPC-MK, OPC-MK-GBS systems) with PCA were higher than those of the cement pastes without MK(OPC, OPC-GBS systems). Colloid suspensions with $0.1\%$ PCA were changed from stable sedimentation behaviors to flocculation behaviors in the OPC-MK, OPC-GBS and OPC-MK-GBS systems. The colloid suspensions showed stable sedimentation behaviors with PCA greater than $0.2\%$. The OPC system showed shear thinning behavior. However, the other systems showed weak shear thinning behaviors with PCA. Rheological properties of cement pastes were improved when MK and GBS were contained together. The rheological properties of OPC-MK, OPC-GBS and OPC-MK-GBS systems were improved by PCA added greater than $0.2\%$.

  • The occurrence of THMs, the characteristics of THMs formation and removal of THMs were investigated. The treatment train of M plant consists of prechlorination, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, ozonation, activated carbon and postchlorination. The study of THM formation indicated that about 92% of the THMs were formed in the flocculation/sedimentation/filtration process which affected by prechlorination. The formation of THMs was highly correlated to $KMnO_4$ consumption and water temperature in raw water. The regression model had showed 0.72~0.80 of determination coefficient so it could be used to predict the amount of THMs formation in finished water. Compared to the prechlorination process, the THMs formation was reduced in interchlorination process. With the addition of PAC, fewer THMs were formed in PAC-chlorination process than in chlorination-PAC process. Our results showed that air stripping could be used to remove the existing THMs.

  • This study was initiated to improve the cooling water quality by chemical coagulation and sedimentation in steel mills. Due to the inefficient flocculation in the settling tanks of blast furnace cooling water systems, the solid particles in the cooling water overflow accumulate and clog the cooling system. To protect the cooling water system from such fouling, proper flocculants must be continuously used. Laboratory tests were performed for the indirect cooling water system of a plate mill. The batch test in the gas scrubbing cooling water system of a blast furnace showed that the proposed coagulant was more effective for the improvement of coagulation and sedimentation than the existing one. During the tests, cationic flocculants were more effective than use of only an anionic flocculant. The suggested combination of anionic and cationic flocculants can probably improve the turbidity removal efficiency of the cooling water. Proper control of the overflow rate by the designed residence time would help turbidity removal efficiency in the settling tank. In addition, the settling can be enhanced by adopting rapid and slow mixing alternatively. Scale problems in blast furnace cooling water system were reduced to some extent by efficient settling.

  • As the regulation of total phosphorus (T-P) concentration in biologically treated sewage effluent is reduced to 0.2~2 mg/L, flocculation process is recommended to remove T-P. In this study, the performance of Ti-salt coagulant was investigated in terms of dosage and pH in removing phosphorus and the collected sludge after Ti-salt flocculation was calcined to produce titania for effective sludge recycling. The flocculation performance was carried out using two methods: sedimentation and air floatation. Both methods were feasible to apply for Ti-salt flocculation. Ti-salt flocculation was effective in reducing phosphorus concentration in sewage effluent, which showed similar performance of alum ($Al_2(SO_4)_3$). The calcined sludge was recycled to titania which is the widely used metal oxide. Titania produed from Ti-salt sludge indicated similar characteristics of commercially-available P-25 in regard to photocatalytic activity and surface area. Therefore, this can be easily adopted to titania application by replacing P-25.
