  • A particle method has been developed for analyzing the motion of 2-D floating body in waves. The particle method is based on the MPS(Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method suggested by Koshizuka et al. (1996), and the flow motion coupled with the motion of floating body can be simulated. The wavemaker and wave absorber are installed at the inflow and outflow boundaries in a computational domain, respectively. The motion characteristics of a floating body is investigated numerically under the various computational conditions.

  • As large waves enter a harbor, during their propagation, the motions a floating body are large and if may even be damaged by waves. This phenomenon may be caused by harbor resonance, resulting from large motion at low wave frequency, which is close to the natural frequency of a vessel. In order to calculate the motion of a floating body in a harbor, it is necessary to use the wave forces containing the body-harbor interference. The simulation program to predict the motions of a floating body by waves in a harbor is developed, and this program is based on the method of velocity potential contiuation method proposed by Ijima and Yoshida The calculated results are shown by the variation of wave frequency, wave angle, and the position of a floating body.

  • Given the rapid progress made in understanding the dynamics of an offshore floating body in an ocean environment, the present study aimed to simulate ocean waves in a small-sized wave flume and to observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To generate regular ocean waves in a wave flume, we combined a wave generator and a wave absorber. In addition, to precisely visualise the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and a high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. This study also focuses on the spectral analysis of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. In addition, the simulated waves agreed well with the plane waves predicted by shallow-water theory. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body was substantially different when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body appeared suddenly at 0.391 Hz as the wave period increased.

  • The motion of a floating body and the free surface flow are the most important design considerations for ships and offshore platforms. In the present research, a numerical method is developed to simulate the motion of a floating body and the free surface using a fixed rectilinear grid system. The governing equations are the continuity equation and Naviere-Stokes equations. The boundary of a moving body is defined by the interaction points of the body surface and the centerline of a grid. To simulate the free surface the Modified Marker-Density method is implemented. Ships advancing in regular waves, the interaction of waves by a fixed circular cylinder array and the response amplitude operators of an offshore platform are simulated and the results are compared with published research data to check the applicability. The numerical method developed in this research gives results good enough for application to the initial design stage.

  • The small craft including jet-board for leisure are commonly smaller than the general commercial vessels. For the floating vessel, the motion analysis is significantly important component to design the shape. It is, however, hardly predicting its behavior by using conventional boundary element method due to violating small amplitude assumption for potential theory. The computational fluid dynamics method can afford to simulate such small craft, but its grid system was not able to calculate motion, because movable body disturbs the grid system by confliction. The dynamics fluid body interaction model with over-set mesh system can be dealt with movable floating body under irregular ocean wave. In this study, several cases were considered to reveal that DFBI is essential method to predict floating body motion. The single phase simulate was conducted to establish the shape perfection, and then the validated vessel was simulated with ocean waves weather DFBI option on or off. Through the comparison, the results between the cases of DFBI on and off shows significantly difference. It was claimed that the DFBI was necessary not only to calculation body motion, but also to predict accurate drag and lift force on the floating body for small size craft.

  • Varying bathymetry significantly affects on the wave propagation and motion response of floating body. Coupled-mode wave theory is adopted to describe the incident wave properly in varying region. The results of waves and motion response are compared to those from numerical wave tank, and the agreement is favorable. The sloped bottom is modeled and its effect on the floating body is discussed.

  • The Stokes waves representing the deep sea waves are expressed as a superposition of several linear waves. To evaluate the motions of floating bodies in the deep seas, it is necessary to evaluate the motions of the bodies in the Stokes waves. The 5th-order Stokes waves are expressed as a superposition of 5 linear waves. Therefore, the motion responses of the bodies in the Stokes waves would be expressed as a superposition of the motion responses of the bodies in the each linear waves. In this research, The experimental results were compared with the numerical results in linear waves and Stokes waves.

  • The purpose of this paper is to understand and model the slow current (~2 m/s) effects on the global response of a floating offshore platform in waves. A time-domain numerical simulation of full wave-current-body interaction by a quadratic boundary element method (QBEM) is applied to compute the hydrodynamic loads and motions of a floating body under the combined influence of waves and current. The study is performed in the context of linearized potential flow theory that is sufficient in understanding the leading-order current effect on the body motion. The numerical simulations are validated by quantitative comparisons of the hydrodynamic coefficients with the WAMIT prediction for a truncated vertical circular cylinder in the absence of current. It is found from the simulation results that the presence of current leads to a loss of symmetry in flow dynamics for a tension-leg platform (TLP) with symmetric geometry, resulting in the coupling of the heave motion with the surge and pitch motions. Moreover, the presence of current largely affects the wave excitation force and moment as well as the motion of the platform while it has a negligible influence on the added mass and damping coefficients. It is also found that the current effect is strongly correlated with the wavelength but not frequency of the wave field. The global motion of a floating body in the presence of a slow current at relatively small encounter wave frequencies can be satisfactorily approximated by the response of the body in the absence of current at the intrinsic frequency corresponding to the same wavelength as in the presence of current. This finding has a significant implication in the model test of global motions of offshore structures in ocean waves and currents.

  • A very large floating structure has rather small motion characteristics as to the whole body, while the motion at end part of such structure becomes largest due to the elastic motion of the structure. This paper presents on the theoretical result on the relative motion characteristics and green water phenomena of VLFS in waves This phenomena affect not only to strength of the structure but also the determination of depth of structure. To predict motion responses of structure in regular waves, the source-dipole distribution method and F.E.M is used By irregular wave results, the probability of occurrence of green water and response of the structure were calculated.

  • The motion of a floating body with multiple owe chambers in waves is studied taking account of fluctuating air pressure in the chambers. The atmospheric pressure drop in one chamber is interrelated with the drop in the other chamber. Velocity potential in the water due to the free surface oscillating pressure patches is calculated by making use of the hybrid Green integral equation. The chamber motion in the frequency domain is calculated for various values of parameters related to the atmospheric pressure drop in the multiple chambers.
