  • The floating breakwater generally has an excellent water exchanging capability, but with some lowering harbor tranquility due to the wave transmission underneath floating body. In the initial stage of design, it is thus required to investigate several alternatives of breakwater layout for their performance of harbor tranquility. The present study aims to formulate a sort of reflection-transmission boundary condition of floating breakwater so that the existing numerical method using time dependent mild slope equation can still be applied to the case of floating breakwaters. The two and three dimensional tests were each performed to demonstrate the performance of the boundary condition. It was found that the reflection and transmission characteristics around the breakwater were well reproduced by the boundary condition. Finally, the reflection-transmission boundary condition were applied to a floating breakwater installed in an imaginary harbor with an irregular shape and bottom topography. The results surely showed that the present numerical method can effectively used in practical works related to the real sea construction of floating breakwaters.

  • This research is intended to suggest some reference materials for the future planning of floating hotel, by reviewing the concept of floating hotel and analyzing the realized and planned ones through the search of related documents and homepages. Floating hotel can be defined as a building for living/recreation/work/entertainment with floating system on water, but without navigation tool. In terms of sequence, the River Kawi Jungle Rafts Resort was built in 1976, Four Seasons Hotel in 1988, and Salt & Sill in 2008. Floating hotels are various in scale(height) and size(room numbers), and have basic, cultural, health & marina facilities. Architectural characteristics of sample facilities can be summarized as self-supporting of the facilities, environmentally friendly architectural planning, utilization of renewable energy, introduction of new plastic composite material, and provision of same view from all bedrooms by rotating the building.

  • In October 2011, a commercialized 100kW class floating photovoltaic system positive plant was installed at Hapcheon dam a multi-purpose reservoir the first time ever in the nation. Floating photovoltaic system differs in water float, mooring device and underwater cable process from land photovoltaic system. As for land and building photovoltaic power generation equipments, many installation cases and skilled experiences are available, and thus installation is not difficult. However, commercial power generation floating photovoltaic system, which is attempted for the first time in the nation, requires to be designed and installed through a series of processes like technical review and verification of data by process in comparison with similar cases. The structure of floating photovoltaic system, an equipment for float photovoltaic module and other electrical equipment, is required to withstand weather environments like wind or typhoon etc and yet not affect water quality negatively, and for implementation of this system, construction efficiency and economy etc should be considered comprehensively. In this paper, the techniques of installing floating photovoltaic structure, mooring device, underwater cable, electrical equipment and remote monitoring control system are explained. The 100kW floating PV system is operating with 15% average capacity factor.

  • In 2019, the Korean government announced the 3rd Basic Plan for Energy, which included expanding the rate of renewable energy generation by 30-40% by 2040. Hence, offshore wind power generation, which is relatively easy to construct in large areas, should be considered. The East Sea coast of Korea is a sea area where the depth reaches 50 m, which is deeper than the west coast, even though it is only 2.5 km away from the coastline. Therefore, for offshore wind power projects on the East Sea coast, a floating offshore wind power should be considered instead of a fixed one. In this study, a response analysis was performed by applying the analytical conditions of IEC61400-3-2 for the design of floating offshore wind power generation systems. In the newly revised IEC61400-3-2 international standard, design load cases to be considered in floating offshore wind power systems are specified. The upper structure applied to the numerical analysis was a 5-MW-class wind generator developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and the marine environment conditions required for the analysis were based on the Ulsan Meteorological Buoy data from the Korea Meteorological Administration. The FAST v8 developed by NREL was used in the coupled analysis. From the simulation, the maximum response of the six degrees-of-freedom motion and the maximum load response of the joint part were compared. Additionally, redundancy was verified under abnormal conditions. The results indicate that the platform has a maximum displacement radius of approximately 40 m under an extreme sea state, and when one mooring line is broken, this distance increased to approximately 565 m. In conclusion, redundancy should be verified to determine the design of floating offshore wind farms or the arrangement of mooring systems.

  • This study analyzed the flow inside floating seedling equipment for Scapharca subcrenata. Due to the aging society of fishing villages, it is impossible to continuously input the labor force. Therefore, it is necessary to improve efficiency. Scapharca subcrenata has high per capita consumption. It serves as an important aquatic food resource. Scapharca subcrenata culture tends to be highly dependent on the natural environment. Production of Scapharca subcrenata is difficult to predict with low stability. In the past, manpower directly installed bamboo nets in mudflats. The seedling equipment devised in this study is a floating type and can be freely moved on the sea according to the prediction of Scapharca subcrenata generation. The flow around the floating seedling equipment was analyzed by numerical analysis. The physical phenomena of the flow around the net inside the floating seedling equipment were visualized. As a result, the space between the floating seedling equipment and the bottom net and the space between the net groups showed a lower flow rate than the inlet flow rate. It is expected that the low flow rate of the floating seedling equipment will have a positive effect on the attachment of Scapharca subcrenata.

  • In this study, the AHP (analytic hierarchy process) technique was used to analyze the risk of expected risk factors and fishing possibilities during gillnet fishing within the floating offshore wind farms (floating OWF). For this purpose, the risks that may occur during gillnet fishing within the floating offshore wind farms were defined as collisions, entanglements, and snags. In addition, the risk factors that cause these risks were classified into three upper risk factors and ten sub risk factors, and the three alternatives to gillnet fishing available within the floating OWF were classified and a hierarchy was established. Lastly, a survey was conducted targeting fisheries and marine experts and the response results were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, among the top risk factors, the risk was the greatest when laying fishing gear. The risk of the sub factors for each upper risk was found to be the highest at the berthing (mooring), the final hauling of fishing net, and the laying of the bottom layer net. Based on the alternatives, the average of the integrated risk rankings showed that allowing full navigation/fisheries had the highest risk. As a result of the final ranking analysis of the integrated risk, the overall ranking of allowing navigation/fisheries in areas where bottom layer nets were laid was ranked the first when moving vessels within the floating OWF was analyzed as the lowest integrated risk ranking of the 30th at the ban on navigation/fisheries. Through this, navigation was analyzed to be possible while it was analyzed that the possibility of gillnet fishing within the floating OWF was not high.

  • The commonly used Newton-Raphson's floating-point number divider algorithm performs two multiplications in one iteration. In this paper, a tentative K'th Newton-Raphson's floating-point number divider algorithm which performs K times multiplications in one iteration is proposed. Since the number of multiplications performed by the proposed algorithm is dependent on the input values, the average number of multiplications per an operation in single precision and double precision divider is derived from many reciprocal tables with varying sizes. In addition, an error correction algorithm, which consists of one multiplication and a decision, to get exact result in divider is proposed. Since the proposed algorithm only performs the multiplications until the error gets smaller than a given value, it can be used to improve the performance of a floating point number divider unit. Also, it can be used to construct optimized approximate reciprocal tables.
