The main purpose of this paper is to present selection criteria for ROK Airforce pilot training candidates in order to save costs involved in sequential pilot training. We use classification models such Decision Tree, Logistic Regression and Neural Network based on aptitude test results of 288 ROK Air Force applicants in 1994-1996. Different models are compared in terms of classification accuracy, ROC and Lift-value. Neural network is evaluated as the best model for each sequential flight test result while Logistic regression model outperforms the rest of them for discriminating the last flight test result. Therefore we suggest a pilot selection criterion based on this logistic regression. Overall. we find that the factors such as Attention Sharing, Speed Tracking, Machine Comprehension and Instrument Reading Ability having significant effects on the flight results. We expect that the use of our criteria can increase the effectiveness of flight resources.

Four dimensional(4-D) trajectory modeling is conducted based on flight plan. The flight plan is divided into several segments which represent certain operating flight modes. Thrust, drag and fuel consumption rate of an aircraft are calculated using BADA provided by Eurocontrol. The trajectory is modeled with the rate of climb/descent calculated with Total-Energy Equation. The simulation results with a typical aircraft and its flight plan indicate that the trajectory modeled corresponds well with the suggested flight plan. The performance profiles including total endurance time and time history for speed, thrust, drag and fuel consumption were also appropriately generated.

This paper introduces general applications of vehicle's dynamic pressure information which is estimated during the flight. And a method to estimate the dynamic pressure for a high speed vehicle is suggested to sustain reliability of the flight under a high estimation accuracy of the information. The presented method is straightforward with simple relations of the compressible flow but is a still merited idea employed for the high speed vehicle control scheme with great accuracy.

An experimenal study on flight control of high-speed AEV(Aero-levitation Electric Vehicle) scale model in wind-tunnel is conducted. The AEV is to fly at very low altitude in predesigned track so that it is always under the wing-in-ground effect. The experiment is intended to fly the scale model to follow the predesigned altitude schedule while holding its attitude (pitch, roll, and yaw). Especially, the altitude changes for climb, cruise, and descent with constant pitch angle are most important maneuvers. The experiment shows that the required mission flights can be performed with appropriate sensors, processors, and actuators.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that have been recently commercialized can largely be divided into fixed-wing aircraft and rotor aircraft by their styles and flight characteristics. Although the fixed-wing aircraft represents higher power efficiency, higher speed, longer flight distance and larger loading weight than the rotor aircraft, they have a disadvantage of requiring a space for take-off and landing. On the other hand, the rotor aircraft can implement vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and represents various flight modes (hovering, steep bank turns and low-speed flights). But they require both precision take-off control and attitude control. In this study, we used a quad-tilt rotor UAV to combine advantages in both the fixed-wing aircraft and the rotor aircraft. The quad-tilt rotor (QTR) system was designed and constructed by adding a tilt device with a servo motor to a general quad-rotor vehicle.

To develop a high-resolution electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payload to be mounted on a high-speed and performance fighter aircraft in an external POD for acquiring daytime and nighttime image information on tactical targets, simulations, including flight environments and maneuvers, should be performed. Such simulations are pertinent to predicting the performance of several variables, such as aerodynamic force and inertia load acting on the payload. This paper describes the development of a flight data acquisition and analysis system based on flight simulation software (SW) for mission simulation of super-maneuverability fighter equipped with EO/IR payload. The effectiveness of the system is verified through comparison with actual flight data. The proposed flight data acquisition and analysis system based on FlightGear can be used as an M&S tool for system performance analysis in the development of the EO/IR payload.
The goal of this paper is to develop an on-board controller for a model helicopter's hovering attitude control, using i8096 one-chip microcontroller. Required controller algorithm is programmed in ASM-96 assembly language and downloaded into an i8096 microcontroller. The performance of hovering flight using this system is verified by experiments with the model helicopter mounted on an instrumented flight stand where 3 potentiometers and an optical proximity sensor measure te attitude and main rotor speed of the helicopter.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) needs autonomous flight capability to accomplish various mission objectives. For this objective, the autopilot is a key element in the UAV system design. The principal goal of autopilot is to guide the aircraft under varying external disturbances throughout the mission phases. The external disturbances include gravity effect, wind gust, and other unexpected obstacles. The gust affects the aircraft flight performance to a significant extent. UAV's low speed, light weight, and the absence of human judgment makes un predictable gust more dangerous. Autopilot design in general takes the gust effect into account to satisfy flight performance requirement. In this study..

This paper describes a vision-based only attitude estimation technique for the leader in the formation flight. The feature points in image obtained from the X-PLANE simulator are extracted by the SURF(Speed Up Robust Features) algorithm. We use POSIT(Pose from Orthography and Scaling with Iteration) algorithm to estimate attitude. Finally we verify that attitude estimation using vision only can yield small estimated error of $1.1{\sim}1.76^{\circ}$.

An analysis and design method for reducing aerodynamic noise in high-speed trains based on biomimetics of noiseless flight of owl is proposed. Wind tunnel testing and numerical CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation for the basic inter-coach spacing model are carried out, and their results compared. To determine the effect of scaling of the owl's flight feather on the noise reduction, two-fold and a four-fold scaled up model of the feather are constructed, and the numerical simulations are carried out to obtain the aerodynamic noise levels for each scale. Original model is found to reduce the noise level by 10 dB, while two-fold increase in length dimensions reduces the noise by 12 dB. Validation of numerical solution using wind tunnel experimental measurements are presented as well.
