  • Ascent trajectory optimization and optimal explicit guidance problems for a satellite launch vehicle in a 2-dimensional pitch plane are studied. The trajectory optimization problem with boundary conditions is formulated as a nonlinear programming problem by parameterizing the pitch attitude control variable, and is solved by using the SQP algorithm. The flight constraints such as gravity-turn are imposed. An optimal explicit guidance algorithm in the exoatmospheric phase is also presented, the guidance algorithm provides steering command and time-to-go value directly using the current states of the vehicle and the desired orbit insertion conditions. To verify the optimality and accuracy of the algorithm simulations are performed.

  • Structural analyses of a engine system is required in development stage for increasing structural reliability and reducing weight. Attitude of a launch vehicle during flight is controlled by combustion chamber rotation varying with TVC (thrust vector control) actuator displacements. In this study nonlinear static analysis is performed for a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using before and after the TVC actuation.

  • An Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS) is an electric optical system with EO/IR cameras, laser sensors, and an IMU. The EOTS calculates coordinates of targets, using attitude and acceleration measured by the IMU. In particular for an armed aircraft, the performance of the weapon system depends on how quickly and accurately it acquires the target coordinates. The IMU should be operated after alignment is complete, to meet the coordinate accuracy required by the weapon system so the initial stabilization time of the IMU should be reduced, by quickly measuring the attitude and acceleration. Alignment is the process of determining the initial attitude by resolving the attitude error of the IMU, and the IMU of mission equipment such as an airborne EOTS, uses velocity matching based on the velocity from GPS/INS for aircraft navigation. In this paper, a method is presented to improve the transfer alignment performance of the airborne EOTS, by maneuvering aircraft and the mission equipment. First, the performance factor of the alignment was identified, as a heading error through the velocity matching model and simulation results. Then acceleration maneuvers and attitude changes were necessary, to correct the error. As a result of flight tests applied to an EOTS on a OOO aircraft system, the transfer alignment performance was improved as the duration time was decreased, by more than five times when the aircraft accelerated by more than 0.2g and the EOTS was moving until 6.7deg/s.

  • Purpose: Aerial application of chemicals with an agricultural helicopter allows for precise and timely spraying and reduces working labor and pollution. An attitude controller for an agricultural helicopter would be helpful to aerial application operator. The objectives of this paper are to determine the transfer function models and to estimate the handling qualities of a bare-airframe model helicopter. Methods: Transfer functions of a model unmanned helicopter were estimated by using NAVFIT and DERIVID modules of the $CIFER^{(R)}$ program to the time history data of frequency sweep flight tests. Control inputs of the transfer functions were elevator, aileron, rudder and collective pitch stick positions and the outputs were resulting on-axis movements of the fuselage. Results: Minimum realization of the transfer functions for pitch rate output to elevator control input and roll rate output to aileron control input produced second order transfer functions with undamped natural frequencies around 3.0 Hz and damping ratios of 0.139 and 0.530, respectively. The equivalent time delays of the transfer functions ranged from 0.16 to 0.44 second. Sensitivity analysis of the proposed parameters allowed derivation of minimal realization of the transfer functions. Conclusions: Handling quality of the model helicopter was addressed based on the eigenvalues of the transfer functions, corresponding undamped natural frequencies with damping ratios. The equivalent time delays of the lateral-directional motion ranged from 0.16 to 0.44 second, longer than the 0.1 to 0.15 second requirement for well-controlled typical manned aerial vehicles.

  • This paper deals with attitude controller design and integrated performance tests on the nitrogen gas reaction control system of KSLV-I. Some major factors which are necessarily required in designing a stabilizing controller of reaction control system are investigated, and the corresponding equations are given. Experimental configurations and test conditions for system level integrated performance tests of the KSLV-I nitrogen gas reaction control system are summarized. It is shown that, based on the experimental data, operational performances of nitrogen gas reaction control system can be analyzed in terms of gas consumption, thrusting force, time delay, and specific impulse. It is also shown that a conformance of the controller to flight can be evaluated. Finally the onboard controller of KSLV-I reaction control system is shown to perform normally with enough stability margin via the first flight test result.

  • It is required to design the RF link with sufficiently stable signal margin to minimize bit errors and improve the quality of received data in the telemetry system modulated digitally like PCM/FM. In case of the vehicle flying at a high speed, the variation of the gain pattern between transmitting and receiving antenna and the fee space loss due to flight distance cause the fluctuation of link. In this paper, KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)- III, the first domestic liquid rocket which was successfully launched in Nov. 2002 is introduced. The SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) variation of the telemetry signal which was measured at S-band ground station, the one which was simulated considering the flight trajectory, and the attitude variation such as roll, pitch and yaw are compared, analyzed, and agree very well. In addition, two virtual flying situations are simulated and evaluated-only one antenna is equipped in one case, and rocket is roll-free in the other.

  • An advanced method of Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) is utilized for improving the aerodynamic performance of modern version supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The flight control system utilize RSS criteria in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes to achieve performance enhancements and improve stability. The T-50 advanced trainer employs the RSS concept in order to improve the aerodynamic performance and the flight control law in order to guarantee aircraft stability. The longitudinal two modes are the short period with high frequency and the phugoid mode with low frequency. The design goals of longitudinal control laws is concerned with the short period damping and frequency optimization using lower order equivalent system and utilizing the requirement of MIL-F-8785C. Analysis of short period mode has been and continues to be performed This paper addresses the analysis of aircraft phugoid node characteristics such as damping, natural frequency, and analysis of aircraft pitch motion that impacted by angle of attack limiter and auto pitch attitude control law.

  • In this paper, a simulation test bed is presented which operates to provide full-scale simulation of airborne multi-function phased array radars. This simulation test bed provides a capability to evaluate the target tracking performance. To realize aircraft operation scenario, we developed 6DOF aircraft dynamics model which can generate trajectories and attitude of an aircraft. This procedure includes steady state flight trim search, autopilot design, and aircraft guidance command design. Also, the radar-environment integrated simulator includes target detection/measurement model and tracking filter. Developed simulator is validated by creating an air-to-air scenario.
