  • Influencing factors on flexural toughness of ring-type fiber reinforced concrete(RSFRC) are investigated. An experiment proceeding ASTM C 78 is peformed to make a comparison between ring-type fibers and double-hook type fibers. Most specimen with ring type fibers have failed by the cone type failure, while discrete hook type fibers have failed by fiber pullout. For the hook-type fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC), the first crack load increases, as the fiber mixing volume increases. Aspect ratio(fiber length/fiber diameter) is critical for hook type fibers, so the flexural toughness increases significantly, as the length of fiber increases. However, for the ring type, the toughness indices Increase as the number of fibers in the specimen increases. Since there is no bond problem between the ring fiber and the concrete matrix, the aspect ratio does not affect the performance of the composite material with the newly developed steel fibers. Influencing factors with respect to flexural toughness RSFRC were observed to be ring diameter, diameter of steel fiber and fiber content.

  • This paper deals with the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by means of thin fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) laminas. This study focuses on modeling of structural of concrete bonded FRP laminate in flexural bending members. Used computational equation is derived by relation of stress and strain. The section analysis is based on experimental observations of a linear strain distribution in the cross section until failure, and a multi-linear moment-deflection curve that is divided into four regions, each terminated by a similarly numbered point. The load-deflection relationship in each region is assumed to be linear. The present model is validated to compare wit the experiment of 4-point bending tests of R/C rectangular beams strengthened with CFRP laminates, and has well predicted the moment-displacement relationships of members.

  • Novel steel fibre reinforced ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with compressive strength of 87.3MPa and density of $1649kg/m^3$ was developed for the flat slabs in civil buildings. This paper investigated structural behaviours of ULCC flat slabs according to a 4-specimen test program under concentrated loading and some reported test results. The investigated governing parameters on the structural behaviours of the ULCC slabs include volume fraction of the steel fibre and the patch loading area. The test results revealed that ULCC flat slabs with and without flexure reinforcement failed in different failure mode, and an increase in volume fraction of the steel fibre and loading area led to an increase in flexural resistance for the ULCC slabs without flexural reinforcement. Based on the experiment results, the analytical models were developed and also validated. The validations showed that the analytical models developed in this paper could predict the ultimate strength of the ULCC flat slabs with and without flexure reinforcement reasonably well.

  • Cold-formed steel (CFS) sections when used as primary load carrying members often require additional strengthening for retrofitting purposes. In some cases, it is also necessary to reduce deflections in order to satisfy serviceability requirements. The introduction of angle sections, screwed to the webs so as to act as external stiffeners, has the potential to both increase flexural strength as well as reduce deflections. This paper presents the results of ten four-point bending tests, on built-up CFS sections, both open and closed, with different stiffening arrangements. In the laboratory tests, the stiffening arrangements increased the moment capacity and stiffness of the CFS beams by up to 85% and 100% respectively. The increase in moment capacity was more evident for the open sections, while that reduction in deflection was largest for the closed sections.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this preliminary study was to investigate, for the first time, the effects of addition of titania nanotubes ($n-TiO_2$) to poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) on mechanical properties of PMMA denture base. MATERIALS AND METHODS. $TiO_2$ nanotubes were prepared using alkaline hydrothermal process. Obtained nanotubes were assessed using FESEM-EDX, XRD, and FT-IR. For 3 experiments of this study (fracture toughness, three-point bending flexural strength, and Vickers microhardness), 135 specimens were prepared according to ISO 20795-1:2013 (n of each experiment=45). For each experiment, PMMA was mixed with 0% (control), 2.5 wt%, and 5 wt% nanotubes. From each $TiO_2$:PMMA ratio, 15 specimens were fabricated for each experiment. Effects of $n-TiO_2$ addition on 3 mechanical properties were assessed using Pearson, ANOVA, and Tukey tests. RESULTS. SEM images of $n-TiO_2$ exhibited the presence of elongated tubular structures. The XRD pattern of synthesized $n-TiO_2$ represented the anatase crystal phase of $TiO_2$. Moderate to very strong significant positive correlations were observed between the concentration of $n-TiO_2$ and each of the 3 physicomechanical properties of PMMA (Pearson's P value ${\leq}.001$, correlation coefficient ranging between 0.5 and 0.9). Flexural strength and hardness values of specimens modified with both 2.5 and 5 wt% $n-TiO_2$ were significantly higher than those of control ($P{\leq}.001$). Fracture toughness of samples reinforced with 5 wt% $n-TiO_2$ (but not those of 2.5% $n-TiO_2$) was higher than control (P=.002). CONCLUSION. Titania nanotubes were successfully introduced for the first time as a means of enhancing the hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of denture base PMMA.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a new way of delivery system of chlorhexidine using self-curing acrylic resin. Different preparations of chlorhexidine, such as chlorhexidine varnish($Chlorzoin^{(R)}$) and chlorhexidine diacetate crystalline, were mixed into self-curing acrylic resin with different methods. Every resin plate was made and was immersed in 100ml of distilled water individually, and kept in an incubator at $37^{\circ}C$. Solution(0.8ml) was collected from the each container at every 24 hours, and the amount of released chlorhexidine in the solution was measured in an ultraviolet spectrophotometer at 255nm. Flexural strength of all of the resin plates in the Experiment 2-A and 2-B were measured using Instron at the end of the experimental periods. The results were as follows: 1. It was found that chlorhexidine was released from the experimental groups in the Experiment 1, 2-A, and 2-B. And the release of chlorhexidine from all of the experimental groups showed a pattern of sustained-release preparation. 2. It seemed likely that a condition of "dryness" reduced a release of chlorhexidine from the chlorhexidine varnish. 3. It may be stated that a method of "chlorhexidine diacetate mix" with the polymer be more efficient than a method of "Chlorzoin mix" with the monomer. 4. Although it was evident that a flexural strength of the acrylic resin plates be reduced by a mix of either Chlorzoin or chlorhexidine diacetate crystalline, it seemed likely that the resin plates except Group 4 and 5 in the Experiment 2-B may be usable in the clinical situation.

  • This study aims to provide basic data that can be applied to construct real structures. For this, an experimental structure was manufactured to identify durability according to age of fiber-reinforced concrete which contains fiber reinforcement materials (polypropylene fiber, steel fiber, cellulose fiber) and structural property about flexural behavior and destruction of reinforced concrete beam, and a relation between load and deflection, crack and destruction according to increase of load and ductility capacity was examined. Fiber-reinforced concrete materials and other constructional materials were experimented and the result is presented as follows: The results obtained through material test of concrete and static experiment of members usings 1. The experiment shows that compressive strength of fiber-reinforced concrete was lower than that of non-reinforced concrete. 2. As a result of strength experiment according to different kinds of fiber, compressive strength of an experimented structure that contains cellulose fiber was the highest when age was 28. 3. When deflection of reinforced concrete beam was examined, it was reported that ductility capacity of the experimented structure that contains fiber-reinforced concrete was raise than that of non-reinforced concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse deformation properties by carrying out of flexure experimentations after fabricating polymer concrete sandwich panels which are composed of the polymer concrete in facing and expanded polystyren in cores, and to provide the basic data necessary to design, fabricate and operate the structure using these polymer concrete sandwich panels The analysed result of this study is summarized as follows. 1. The result of experiment on flexural deflection indicated that the thicker the thickness of both cores and facing of the polymer concrete sandwich panels, the smaller the deflection but the larger the ultimate shear force. In addition, it was also shown that the thicker the thickness of these cores and facing, the smaller the increasing rate of the deflection with the increase of load. 2. The breaking shape of polymer concrete sandwich panels by experiment on flexure was different according to the thickness of facing. When the facing was 5mm in thickness, it was the flexure while it was the flexure and shear failure when the facing was 5mm in thickness. As a result, it seems that the thickness of the facing has a great effect on failure. 3. There were induced not only the related formula between load, deflection and deformation according to the thickness of cores and facing on the basis of the flexure experiment, but also formula between load, horizontal displacement, Then, it seems that it will be possible to estimate the above elements by using these related formulas.
