Prefabricated partially-encased composite (PEC) structural component is widely used in construction industry due to its superior structural performance and easy assembly characteristic. However, the solid web in traditional PEC components tends to split concrete into two halves, thus potentially reduces structural integrity and requires double concrete pouring. To overcome the above disadvantages, a new PEC beam with open-web π-shaped steel is proposed in this paper. Four open-web PEC beams with varying sectional height, flange thickness and web void rate were constructed and tested under flexural loads. During experimental tests, all beams exhibited typical flexural failure modes with strong moment capacities and excellent ductility. Owing to the unique construction form of web opening, steel-concrete bonding properties were enhanced and very small relative steel-concrete slips were observed. Experimental results also showed that the flexural capacity of such PEC beams increased with the increase of the sectional height and flange thickness, while was not affected by the web void rate. At last, a flexural capacity formula of the open-web PEC beam was proposed based on the whole section plastic rule. The formula results agreed well with experimental results.

The floor impact noise of concrete structures in apartments buildings is affected from the flexural wave propagation characteristics. Accordingly, the measurement of wave propagation characteristics is required for suggestion of efficient method to reduce the impact noise. The purpose of this article is to propose an experimental technique to measure dynamic properties of concrete structures. The method was proposed using the flexural wave propagation characteristics. Wave speeds, bending stiffness and their loss factors are estimated from which the vibration dissipation capabilities are investigated. Several different concrete beam structures were custom-built for measurement. The damping treatments using viscoelastic materials for reducing noise generation are also tested. The beam transfer function of the damped beam is predicted using the compressional damping model from which the mechanism of the vibration energy dissipation is investigated.
This paper presents a simplified grid beam model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete flat-plate structures. The beam elements are defined with nonlinear behavior for bending moment and torsion. The flexural stiffness and torsional strength of the beam elements are defined based on experimental data to implicitly account for slab two-way bending effects. A failure criterion that considers the interaction between the punching strength and slab flexural behavior is incorporated in the model. The effects of bond-slip of slab reinforcement on connection stiffness are examined. The proposed grid beam model is validated by simulating large-scale tests of slab-column connections subjected to concentric gravity loading and unbalanced moment. This study also determines the critical parameters for a hysteretic model used to simulate flat-plates subjected to cyclic lateral loading.

The purpose of this paper is to predict the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by the external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced plate(CFRP) to the tension face of the beam. Used computational equation is derived by relation of stress an strain. This equation is applied to four-nondamage beam and tow-preloading beam. Six scale beams were tested to evaluate the strength enhancement provided by the CFRP. And describes the strength enhancement provided to the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beam by the external bonding of CFRP. An inelastic section analysis procedure was developed that accurately predicts the load displacement response of the retrofitted beams.

Composite beams are generally known to possess higher flexural stiffness and strength under the positive bending moments than the normal steel beams. However the these beams also exhibit large differences in flexural stiffness and strength when both positive and negative bending moments are applied. As observed during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, these beams tend to be fractured on the bottom flanges under repeated cyclic loadings. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the composite beam detail, which is able to effectively resist the seismic loadings. The proposed system is composed of the slit on concrete slab around column. A limited experimental program was designed and conducted to investigate the hysteretic behavior of the proposed composite beam system. From the experimental data obtained from the testing of three specimens, the proposed composite beam detail is found to possess large beam rotation than normal steel beams.

The steel-plate concrete composite beam is composed of a steel plate, concrete and shear connector to combine two inhomogeneous materials. In general, the steel plate is assembled by welding an existing composite beam. In this study, the SPC beam was composed of folding steel plates and concrete, without a headed stud. The folding steel plate was assembled by a high strength bolt instead of welding. To improve the workability in a field construction, a hat-shaped cap was attached to the junction with a slab. Monotonic load testing under two points was conducted under displacement control mode to analyze the flexural strength of the SPC beam using a cap as the shear connector. Five specimens with shear connector types, protrusion length, and different thickness of steel plates were constructed and tested. The experimental results were analyzed through the relationship between the shear strength ratio and flexural strength in KBC 2009. The test results showed a shear strength ratio of more than 40 %. In the case of using a cap-like specimen as the shear connector, the flexural strength was 70% of the value calculated as a fully composite beam. In addition, the cap showed a smaller shear strength than the stud, but the cap served as a shear connection. When the thickness of the steel plate was taken as a variable, the steel plate exhibited a bending strength of approximately 70% compared to a fully formed steel plate, and exhibited similar deformation performance. Local buckling occurred due to incomplete composite behavior, but local buckling occurred at a 5% higher strength for a relatively thick steel plate. The buckling width also decreased by 15%.
In underground parking lots of apartment housing, the story height is increased by $300{\sim}400mm$ because of various ducts for HVAC. In order to reduce this story height, this study proposed the 'hybrid beam', which is composed of PC beam with embedded steel beam and insitu concrete. The depth of the hybrid beam is reduced by 300 mm and then the steel beam is embedded over the length of reduced depth to compensate for the loss of strength. Then, we performed the large-scale structural tests on 9 specimens and investigated the flexural behavior of the specimens. The parameters of tests were the shape of steel beam section, the length of the reduced depth, the stage of construction, the effects of slab and shear connectors. The test results showed that the specimens, after the insitu concrete has cured, has the flexural capacity which exceeds the required design capacity regardless of other parameters. On the other hand, the specimens of construction stage do not have sufficient strength. Based on these results, it is thought that the proposed hybrid beam with reduced depth is applicable to the underground parking lots of apartment housing as long as the support is placed at construction stage.
Flexural behaviors of the two typical precast beam sections (inverted tee and rectangular) for buildings were investigated and compared. The height of web in the inverted tee beam was generally less than half of beam depth to be adapted to that of the nib in the ends of double-tee where the total building height limited considerably. The inverted-tee beams were designed for a parking live load - 500kgf/$m^2$ and a market - 1,200kgf/$m^2$ from the currently used typical shape of a domestic building site in Korea. The area and bottom dimension of rectangular beams were the same as those of inverted tee beams. These woo beams were also reinforced with a similar strength. following results were obtained from the studies above; 1) the rectangular beam is simpler in production, transportation, and erection, and more economic than the inverted tee beam in the construction test for these two beams with a same dimension and a similar strength, 2) all of the beams considered in the tests were generally failed in values close to those of the strength requirements in ACI Provisions. The ratios of test result to calculated value are averaged to 1.04. One rectangular and one inverted tee beams failed in a value only 2-3% larger than the estimated volue of the Strength Design Methool the results of the Strain Compatibility Method wire slightly more accurate than those of the Strength Design Method, 4) the maximum deflections of all of the beams under the full service loads were less than those of the allowable limit in ACI Code Provisions. The rectangular beams experienced more deflection then inverted tee in the same loading condition and failed with more deflection, and 5) the rectangular and inverted tee beams showed good performances under the condition of service and ultimate loads. However, one inverted tee beams with fm span developed an initial flexural crackings under 88% of the full service load even though they designed to satisfy the ACI tensile stress limit provisions.

In the present study, chopped henequen natural fibers without and with surface modification by electron beam (E-beam) treatment were incorporated into a polypropylene matrix. Prior to composite fabrication, a bundle of raw henequen fibers were treated at various E-beam intensities from 10 kGy to 500 kGy. The effect of E-beam intensity on the interfacial, mechanical and thermal properties of randomly oriented henequen/polypropylene composites with the fiber contents of 40 vol% was investigated focusing on the interfacial shear strength, flexural and tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, thermal stability, and fracture behavior. Each characteristic of the material strongly depended on the E-beam intensity irradiated, showing an increasing or decreasing effect. The present study demonstrates that henequen fiber surfaces can be modified successfully with an appropriate dosage of electron beam and use of a low E-beam intensity of 10 kGy results in the improvement of the interfacial properties, flexural properties, tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties and thermal stability of henequen/polypropylene composites.

This paper presents experimental and analytical results on flexural behavior of flexural members made of SIFCON. Twelve SIFCON beams were subjected to bending tests and their flexural behavior was evaluated. Experimental variables included steel fiber type, presence of tensile reinforcement, and height of section. The specimens using Type-B steel fibers, which had better pullout resistance than Type-A steel fibers, showed flexural failure behavior without shear failure. The aspect ratio of steel fiber had a great influence on the behavior of SIFCON beams without tensile steel, however the effect on the behavior of SIFCON beams was negligible. In addition, the flexural strength equation for SIFCON was proposed in the study. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios of the predicted value to the experimental value are 1.02 and 0.04, respectively. Therefore, the proposed flexural strength equation can be useful for the design and performance evaluation of SIFCON beam.
