  • In this paper, computer simulations with the absolute nodal coordinate formulation for large deformation problems in flexible multibody dynamics are compared to the real experiments. A high speed camera was employed to capture the deformed shapes of a thin beam, a plate, a rotating chain, and a paper strip. The measured data was used to calculate precise values for stiffness and damping ratio of the objects. Also a rotating strip and a helicoseir problem were formulated for computer simulation, and the computational results are also compared to the experiments.

  • A flexible one-link robotic manipulator is modelled as a rotating cantilever beam with a hub and tip mass. An active control law is developed with consideration of the distributed flexibility of the arm. Equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle and, for modal control, represented as state variable form using Galerkin's mode summation method. Feedback coefficients are chosen to minimize the linear quadratic performance index(PI). To reconstruct the complete state vector from the measurements, an observer is proposed. In order to suppress vibration of the manipulator arm to desirable extent and to obtain accuracy of the positioning, weighting factor of input in PI is adjusted. Spillover effect due to the controller which controls several important modes is examined. Experiment is also performed to validate the theoretical analysis.

  • This paper is to investigate the effects of the asymmetrical support stiffness on the stability of a supercritical driveshaft with asymmetrical shaft stiffness and anisotropic bearings. The equations of motion is derived for a system including a rigid disk, a massless flexible asymmetric shaft, anisotropic bearings and a support beam. The Floquet theory is applied to perform the stability analysis with the variation of the support stiffness, the shaft asymmetry, the shaft damping and the shaft speed. The results show that the asymmetric support stiffness is closely related to the stability caused by primary resonance as well as the supercritical operation. First, the stiffness variation can stabilize the system around primary resonance by weakening the parametric resonance from the shaft asymmetry. Second, it also improve the stability characteristics at a supercritical operation when the support stiffness is not so high relative to the shaft stiffness.

  • Random beanforming exploits multiuser diversity gain in static channels. Since the gain is restricted by the user population, some extended works have been proposed. Among them, a codebook-based opportunistic beamforming technique forms multiple random beams with small pilots. The technique however has difficulty in designing beams flexibly by the channel statistics. In this paper, we propose a technique forming the multiple random beams by rotating codebooks. The proposed technique enables the flexible design of beams so that multiuser diversity and beam selection diversity are exploited simultaneously with small pilots robust to the channel statistics.
