The mode shapes of a segmented hull model towed in a model basin were predicted using both the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and cross random decrement technique. The proper orthogonal decomposition, which is also known as Karhunen-Loeve decomposition, is an emerging technology as a useful signal processing technique in structural dynamics. The technique is based on the fact that the eigenvectors of a spatial coherence matrix become the mode shapes of the system under free and randomly excited forced vibration conditions. Taking advantage of the simplicity of POD, efforts have been made to reveal the mode shapes of vibrating flexible hull under random wave excitation. First, the segmented hull model of a 400 K ore carrier with 3 flexible connections was towed in a model basin under different sea states and the time histories of the vertical bending moment at three different locations were measured. The measured response time histories were processed using the proper orthogonal decomposition, eventually to obtain both the first and second vertical vibration modes of the flexible hull. A comparison of the obtained mode shapes with those obtained using the cross random decrement technique showed excellent correspondence between the two results.

This paper presents a new control strategy for the position and force control of flexible manipulators. The governing equation of motion of a two-link flexible manipulator which features piezoceramic actuators bonded on each flexible beam is derived via Hamilton's principle. The control torque of the motor to command desired position and force is determined by a sliding mode controller on the basis of the rigid-mode dynamics. In the controller formulation, the sliding mode controller with perturbation estimation(SMCPE) is adopted to determine appropriate control gains. The SMCPE is then incorporated with the fuzzy technique to mitigate inherent chattering problem while maintaining the stability of the system. A set of fuzzy parameters and control rules are obtained from a relation between estimated perturbation and actual perturbation. During the commanded motion, undesirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying feedback control voltages to the piezoceramic actuators. These feedback voltages are also determined by the SMCPE. Consequently, accurate force and position control of a two-link flexible manipulator are achieved. Computer simulations are undertaken in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.

In this paper, the general problem of impedance control for a robotic manipulator with a moving flexible base is addressed. Impedance control imposes a relation between force and displacement at the contact point with the environment. The concept of impedance control of flexible base mobile manipulator is rather new and is being considered for first time using singular perturbation and new sliding mode control methods by authors. Initially slow and fast dynamics of robot are decoupled using singular perturbation method. Slow dynamics represents the dynamics of the manipulator with rigid base. Fast dynamics is the equivalent effect of the flexibility in the base. Then, using sliding mode control method, an impedance control law is derived for the slow dynamics. The asymptotic stability of the overall system is guaranteed using a combined control law comprising the impedance control law and a feedback control law for the fast dynamics. As first time, base flexibility was analyzed accurately in this paper for flexible base moving manipulator (FBMM). General dynamic decoupling, whole system stability guarantee and new composed robust control method were proposed. This proposed Sliding Mode Impedance Control Method (SMIC) was simulated for two FBMM models. First model is a simple FBMM composed of a 2 DOFs planar manipulator and a single DOF moving base with flexibility in between. Second FBMM model is a complete advanced 10 DOF FBMM composed of a 4 DOF manipulator and a 6 DOF moving base with flexibility. This controller provides desired position/force control accurately with satisfactory damped vibrations especially at the point of contact. This is the first time that SMIC was addressed for FBMM.

The control of flexible joint robot is getting more attentions because its applications are more frequently used for robot systems in these days. This paper proposes a robust impedance controller for the flexible joint robot by using integral sliding mode control and backstepping control. The sliding mode control decouple disturbances completely but requires matching condition for disturbances. The dynamic model of flexible joint robot is divided into motor side and link side and the disturbance of the link side does not satisfy matching condition and cannot be decoupled directly by the actual input in the motor side. To overcome this difficulty, backstepping control technique is used with sliding mode control. The mismatched disturbance in the link side is changed into matched one in the respect to virtual control input which is the state controlled by actual input in the motor side. Integral sliding mode control is used to preserve the impedance control performance and the improved robustness at the same time.
The position control accuracy of the robot arm is decreased significantly when a long arm robot is operated at high speed. In this case, the robot arm must be modeled as a flexible structure, not a rigid one, and its control system will be necessarily designed with its elastic modes taken into account. In this paper, the vibration control of a one-link flexible robot arm is presented. The robot system consists of a flexible arm manufactured with thin aluminium plate, AC servomotor with a harmonic drive for speed reduction, optical encoder and accelerometer. The system is modeled with limited number of elastic modes, and its parameters are determined from the results of the experiments. The implemented control schemes are LQ control and sliding mode control. The experiments and digital simulations are carried out to test the validity of the system modeling, controller design, and active control implementation.
This paper presents a new control strategy for the position and force control of a flexible manipulator. The governing equation of motion of a two-link flexible manipulator which features a piezoceramic actuator is derived via Hamilton's principle. The control torque of the motor to command desired position and force is determined by a sliding mode controller. This controller is formulated to take account of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. During the commanded motion, undesirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezoceramic actuator. Consequently, an accurate compliant motion control of the flexible manipulator is achieved. Computer simulations are undertaken in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.
A new control strategy to actively control the vibration of a very flexible single link manipulator is proposed and experimentally realized. The control scheme consists of two actuators; a motor mounted at the beam hub and a piezoceramic bonded to the surface of the flexible link. The control torque of the motor to produce a desired angular motion is firstly determined by employing a sliding mode control theory on the equivalent rigid dynamics. The torque is then applied to the flexible manipulator in order to activate the commanded motion. During the motion, underirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezoceramic actuator. Consequently, the desired tip position is favorably accomplished without vibration. Measured control responses are presented in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed control methodology.
This paper presents a new stochastic controller applied on the vibration control system under irregular disturbances based on the mode selection scheme. Measured displacement and frequency characteristics are simultaneously used in designing a mode selecting controller. This technique is validated by applying to the suppression problem of a flexible beam with randomly vibrated circumstances. The presented method, called Mode Selecting Stochastic Controller, uses the frequency measurement of the flexible system based on a Fast-Fourier transformation algorithm. This controller is constructed by combining mode selection method with previous known Stochastic Controller in real time: Numerical simulations and several experiments are conducted to validate the proposed method. The performance of the proposed method is compared with a stochastic controller developed recently. This method was improved compared with previous one.
This paper presents a nonlinear modeling method for dynamic analysis of flexible structures undergoing overall motions that employs the mode approximation method. This method, different from the naive nonlinear method that approximates only Cartesian deformation variables, approximates not only deformation variables but also strain variables. Geometric constraint relations between the strain variables and the deformation variables are introduced and incorporated into the formulation. Two numerical examples are solved and the reliability and the accuracy of the proposed formulation are examined through the numerical study.
In this paper, gait generation algorithm based on Linear Inverted Pendulum Mode is extended considering that the terrain is uncertain and flexible. Deformation of the soft terrain by the weight of the biped robot is taken into account to design the desired motion of the swing leg. Landing time disagreement caused by dynamics of the robot is also considered and a method to adjust gait is proposed. Results of numerical simulation show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
