  • This paper analyses the tool switching problem in the dynamic environment, where parts to be processed on a flexible machine arrive randomly. As the total number of tools required to Process a set of parts on the machine is generally larger than the available magazine storage capacity, tool switches between parts are usually necessary. We assume that tool switching must be made just before the processing of the parts. Since the time required for tool switches can be significant relative to processing time and cause the processing of parts to be delayed, it is desirable to minimize the number of tool switches. Therefore, we present one heuristic algorithm to minimize the total number of tool switches and the t)reposed heuristic is compared with the KTNS (Keep Tool Needed Soonest) policy on randomly generated problems.

  • The surface, generated by end milling operation, is deteriorated by tool runout, vibration, tool wear and tool deflection, etc. Among them, the effect of tool deflection on surface accuracy is analyzed. Surface generation model for the prediction of the topography of machined srufaces has been developed based on cutting mechanism and cutting tool geometry. This model accounts for not only the ideal geometrical surface, but also the deflection of tool due to cutting force. For the more accurate prediction of cutting force, flexible end mill model is used to simulate cutting process. Computer simulation has shown the feasibility of the surface generation system. Using developed simulation system, the relations between the shape of end mill and cutting conditions are analyzed.

  • This paper presents a scheduling method that uses Petri net modeling and heuristic search to handle the tool setup. In manufacturing systems, a tool is attached to a particular machine to process a particular operation. The activity to attach a tool to a particular machine and detach the tool from the machine requires time. The processing time of operations varies according to the attached tool and the machine used. The method proposed in this paper uses Petri net to model these characteristics and applies a search algorithm to the reachability graph of the Petri net model to generate an optimal or near-optimal schedule. New heuristic functions are developed for efficient search. The experimental results that show the effectiveness of the proposed method are presented.

  • In this paper, we present a new specific and customized interface tool with parameter identification of Modified Butterworth-Van Dyke models for ladder bulk acoustic wave filters. The aforementioned tool is easy to use and flexible because it allows simulations and reengineering to be conducted in an application. A modular design approach is applied to simplify the extension of the proposed tool for different topologies. The proposed tool was validated using measurements from an aluminum-nitride based ladder BAW filter dedicated to the frequency ranges of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service and standards and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access.

  • We consider problems of tool loading and scheduling in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) in which tool transportation constitutes the major portion of material flows. In this type of FMSs, parts are initially assigned to machines and released to the machines according to input sequencing rules. Operations for the parts released to the machines are performed by tools initially loaded onto the machines or provided by an automatic tool transport robot when needed. For an efficient operation of such systems, therefore, we may have to consider loading and scheduling problems for tools in addition to those for parts. In this paper, we consider three problems, part loading, tool loading, and tool scheduling problems with the overall objective of minimizing the makespan. The part loading problem is solved by a method similar to that for the bin packing problem and then a heuristic based on the frequency of tool usage is applied for tool loading. Also suggested are part input sequencing and tool scheduling rules. To show the effectiveness of the overall algorithm suggested here, we compare it with an existing algorithm through a series of computational tests on randomly generated test problems.

  • This paper addresses the problem of placing tools in a tool magazine with random-select capability on a flexible machine. The tool placement problem could be a significant portion of the total processing time. It is assumed that the total number of tools required to process a set of parts exceeds the available magazine capacity, and so tool switches may occur between two adjacent parts in a given part sequence. Two heuristics are presented so as to minimize the total travel distance of the tool magazine before the completion of all parts.

  • Due to its flexibility of the composite propeller blade, it is necessary to design a shape capable of generating a desired load at a design point in consideration of the shape change of the propeller. In order to design it, we need to evaluate not only the hydrodynamic force around it, but also its structural response of flexible propeller according to its deformation. So, it is necessary to develop a design tool to predict the hydroelastic performance of a flexible propeller with deformation considering fluid-structure interaction and special operating conditions. Finally a design optimization tool for flexible propellermade of CFRP is required. In this study, a design methodology of the specific flexible composite propeller is suggested, considering fluid-structural interaction analysis of the specific flexible propeller.
