  • This study deals with the collection of solar energy and its storage in evacuated tubular collector systems for different types of header design, flow passage and heat transfer devices. In order to elicit the most efficient combination of header design, flow passage, heat transfer hardware and operating conditions, a series of tests were done for the four different types of solar collectors utilizing vacuum tubes. The systems studied here either has the evacuated collector tubes with a metal cap on one end or the all-glass evacuated solar collector tubes These evacuated tubular collectors are known to be more efficient than the flat-plate ones in both direct and diffuse solar radiation. Test results show that the system comprised of the all-glass evacuated tubes with U-shaped copper pipes inside outperforms the other configurations. Especially, a rolled copper sheet tightly placed along the inner surface of each inner tube enhances heat transfer between the heated collector surface and the water contained in the U-shaped copper pipe.

  • In this study, heating performance of the air-cooled heat pump with vapor-injection (VI) cycles, re-heater and solar heat storage tank was investigated experimentally. Devices used in the experiment were comprised of a VI compressor, re-heater, economizer, variable evaporator, flat-plate solar collector for hot water, thermal storage tank, etc. As working fluid, refrigerant R410A for heat pump and propylene glycol (PG) for solar collector were used. In this experiment, heating performance was compared by three cycles, A, B and C. In case of Cycle B, heat exchange was conducted between VI suction refrigerant and inlet refrigerant of condenser by re-heater (Re-heater in Fig. 3, No. 3) (Cycle B), and Cycle A was not use re-heater on the same operating conditions. In case of Cycle C, outlet refrigerant from evaporator go to thermal storage tank for getting a thermal energy from solar thermal storage tank while re-heater also used. As a result, Cycle C reached the target temperature of water in a shorter time than Cycle B and Cycle A. In addition, it was founded that, as for the coefficient of heating performance($COP_h$), the performance in Cycle C was improved by 13.6% higher than the performance of Cycle B shown the average $COP_h$ of 3.0 and by 18.9% higher than the performance of Cycle A shown the average $COP_h$ of 2.86. From this results, It was confirmed that the performance of heat pump system with refrigerant re-heater and VI cycle can be improved by applying solar thermal energy as an auxiliary heat source.

  • The performance of air type solar heating system has been investigated for a system which has been operating continuously for two years. Design factors of a collector, such as the effective transmittance-absorptance and heat transfer factor were also determined experimentally. The flat plate collector is fabricated from steel sheet metal with two sealed glass covers. Solar heat is stored in a pebble bed of primarily granitic rock approximately 20-40 mm in diameter. The system is controled by automatically driven motors and dampers. The ratio of useful collected solar heat divided by the total solar radiation on the collector dropped was the range of 35 to 42 percent in monthly average. As it result, the air system was found fairly competitive with the water system, however, the heat supply from storage was limited because of using the pebble as the heat storage media.

  • In the solar heat collection system, we can determine how the collector will perform under specific conditions from the efficiency curve. By understanding the basic principles which govern the operation, designers can maximize the output from the collector. Absorptance, transmission and the total heat transfer coefficient were introduced to induce this efficiency curve. Designers who can make use of the implicit information on the curve in this report will generate systems which obtain the best return from their client's investment.

  • In this paper, the water-based Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reduction method and their extinction coefficients are measured by an in-house developed measurement device. The Ag nanofluids are manufactured by the chemical reduction method with the mixing of silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The extinction coefficients of Ag nanofluids are measured by means of the in-house developed apparatus at a wavelength of 632.8nm according to the particle volume fractions. The results show that the extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids increases with the increase of nanoparticle concentrations. Finally, the temperature field and efficiency of direct absorption solar collector (DASC) are analytically estimated based on the measured extinction coefficient of water-based Ag nanofluids. The results indicate that the direct absorption solar collectors using nanofluids have the feasibility to improve the efficiency of conventional flat-plate solar collectors without using an absorber plate.

  • A low-temperature solar thermal system assisting a biological nitrogen treatment reservoir was designed and field-tested. A large tank whose temperature was maintained at about $25-30^{\circ}C$ to enhance the performance of a biological nitrogen treatment process was heated by an array of flat plate solar collectors. Test results revealed that the overall collector efficiency was above 50% for the most cases tested. This high efficiency was possible owing to the relatively low collector temperature that can be traced back to the reservoir temperature. A substantial enhancement in nitrogen treatment was observed as a result of maintaining the reservoir temperature higher.

  • In the present work, a computer simulation is performed employing Hottel-Whillier-Bliss model for thermal performance of solar collectors. The major collector parameters examined in the computer simulation are: number of transparent glass covers(N), thermal emissivity of the absorbing plate surface (.epsilon.$_{P}$), absorptivity of absorber plate (.alpha.$_{p}$), flow rate per unit area of collector (G), $L_{b}$ / $k_{b}$ of insulation material, tilt angle of collector (S), and solar insolation(I). By varying numerical values of the major collector parameters around their typical values, the corresponding variations in thermal efficiency curves are examined. In addition, an experimental investigation has been carried out with a slightly modified KAIST collector test loop under a real sun condition in order to compare with the simulation results, examine the applicability of the mathematical model of the collector thermal performance, and study the effect of variation of flow rate (G) on thermal efficiency and the range of optimum flow rate.e.

  • The surface roughness and heat transfer enhancement devices are known to increase the performance of a flat plate soar collector. This study includes the experiments on the effect of the several heat transfer enhancement devices inserted in duct to simulate the flat-plate solar collector. Experiment was basically at a constant heat flux on the upper duct wall. Inserted heat transfer enhancement devices are Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$, Chamfered rib $20^{\circ}$, Rib & Groove and Rib & Dimple. Reynolds number is in the range of 2,300 to 22,000 which corresponds to turbulent regime. With the heat transfer enhancement devices, heat transfer would increase by the secondary flow and the increase of the heat transfer area. Pressure drop also increases with the insertion of the enhancement devices. Rib & Dimple model is the best in heat transfer enhancement, however, Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$ model is the lowest in the pressure drop. Considering the heat transfer enhancement simultaneously with low pressure drop increase, performance factor was the best for the Chamfered rib $10^{\circ}$.

  • This research investigates the effect of natural dust accumulation on the glass cover of solar thermal energy conversion systems. Four similar, locally manufactured, flat plate solar collectors are used. All collectors are South oriented with tilt angle of $40^{\circ}$. The glass cover of one collector is kept clean of dust during the experimental period while the second collector is cleaned at the beginning of each month. The third collector is cleaned every two months while the fourth collector is kept un-cleaned throughout the experimental period of four months. The calculated parameters are the solar heat gain rates and the corresponding values of the thermal efficiency. The result of the present work indicates that the percentage of fractional reduction of the useful heat gain rate due to dust accumulation during a period of one and two months is 11.4% and 17.0%, respectively. The percentage decrease of thermal efficiency during the same duration periods is 4.0% and 6.1%, respectively. The percentage of fractional reduction of the useful heat gain rate due to dust accumulation during a period of three and four months is 27.8% and 31.9%, respectively. The percentage decrease of monthly thermal efficiency during the same duration period is 10.2% and 11.3%, respectively.

  • The three years Performance of a liquid type solar heating system has been determined for a system which has been determined for a system which has been operating continuously since 1976 in Seoul with no serious maintenance. A flat plate collector is used to transform incident solar radiation into thermal energy. This energy is stored if the form of sensible energy and used as needed to supply the space heating loads. An electric auxiliary heaters are provided to supply energy for space heating load when the energy in the storage tank is depleted. The ratio of useful collected solar heat divided by the total solar radiation on the collector was obtained about 84 per cent. It is also obtained the relation between ratio of solar collector area to the heating area and the ratio of useful collected solar energy to the heating load for the useful design data. A comparison between the measured and simulated results with the solar space heating system is described. Hour by hour simulation is made on unsteady state basis using the system parameters and meteorological data at the experiment site. The result of comparison turned out satisfactory for the solar heating system, though the simulation was formed somewhat higher than by experimental.
