  • In recent years, there are a number of studies that have been carried out to explore the alternative for Mineral Oil (MO) as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to the increasing tight regulation on safety and environment. Vegetable oils have been identified as suitable candidate since it is biodegradable, non-toxic and high flash/fire points which ensure more in-service safety. Among the types of vegetable oils considered for transformers application are Palm Oil (PO) and Coconut Oil (CO). This paper presents an experimental study on the lightning breakdown voltages of PO and CO under non-uniform electric field based on needle-sphere electrodes configuration at 3 small gap distances. The type of PO used in this study is Refined Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) Olein. The main focus of this study is to examine the lightning breakdown performance of RBDPO and CO under different test conditions and assess its suitability as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. The effect of voltage polarities (positive and negative) and testing methods (rising-voltage, up-and-down and multiple-voltage) were investigated. The data obtained from all tests were analysed by Weibull distribution in order to determine the withstand voltages for each type of oils. It was found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO are comparable with MO under positive lightning impulse. Under negative lightning impulse, the breakdown voltage of MO is slightly higher than RBDPO and CO. There is no significant effect of testing methods and voltage polarities on lightning breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO. Based on the statistical analysis, it is found that the breakdown voltages of RBDPO and CO at 1% probability are slightly lower than MO.

  • The contaminated engine oil by fuel can intimidate driver safety due to vehicle problems such as engine abrasion, fire and sudden unintended acceleration. In this study, we investigate various functional properties of the engine oil contaminated with fuel. The test results indicated that the engine oil contaminated with fuel had relatively low values of the flash point, pour point, density, kinematic viscosity and cold cranking simulator. Furthermore, a four ball test suggested that the contaminated engine oil increased wear scar due to the poor lubricity. Moreover, SIMDIST (simulated distillation) using ASTM D2887 was applied to analyze fuel characteristics in an engine oil. The SIMDIST analysis result showed a lower carbon number, and the fuel was detected at an earlier retention time than that of using engine oil in chromatogram. Also, it is possible to quantitatively analyze for fuel contents in the engine oil. The SIMDIST method for the diagnosis of oil conditions can be used whether the fuel was involved or not, instead of analyzing other physical properties that require various analytical instruments, large volumes of oil samples, and long analysis time.

  • Engine oil is a substance used for the lubrication of internal combustion systems. However, in some case, defects in engine systems may contaminate engine oil with fuel. Contaminated engine oil can cause problems in the normal functioning of a vehicle. In this study, we investigate the functional properties of engine oil contaminated with diesel fuel. The test results indicate that the engine oil contaminated with diesel fuel has low flash point, pour point, density, kinematic viscosity and cold cranking simulator value. The contaminated engine oil which has low plash point can cause fire and explosion accident. Furthermore, a four ball test indicates that the contaminated engine oil increases wear scar to poor lubricity. Moreover, we investigate the GC pattern using SIMDIST (simulated distillation) for determination of diesel in engine oil. The SIMDIST analytic result, diesel was detected at earlier retention time than engine oil in chromatogram. Thus the SIMDIST method can define whether engine oil is contaminated by diesel fuel or not. We can use the SIMDIST method for the diagnosis of oil condition instead of analyzing other physical properties that require many analytic instruments, large volume of oil sample and long analysis time.

  • Heat transfer oils are used in applications such as heating systems of chemical plant, refinery heat exchange systems, gas plant process, injection molding systems, and pulp and paper processing. These oils are extremely stable and resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation. In the event of a spill or accidental release of heat transfer oils, it can be ignite easily when there is an ignition source. This paper discusses the flammability and thermal stabilities of new and used oils. The flammability of the oils are assessed by measuring changes in flash point and auto ignition temperature. The thermal stability of oils are evaluated by the thermal screening unit ($TS^u$) and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). From the experimental results, it is suggested to give fire hazard characteristics to safe precautions for the proper use and treatment of heat transfer oils.

  • Mineral electrical insulating oil, which is widely used in transformers, exhibits excellent cooling performance and transformer efficiency. However, given that it is composed of petroleum-based components, it is weak in terms of biodegradability. This causes environmental problems in case of leakage and a low flash point, which is a factor that would cause great damage in the event of a fire in a substation. In this context, the use of eco-friendly electric insulating oil composed of bio-based vegetable oil and synthetic ester, which has excellent biodegradability and flame retardancy performance, has recently been expanded to the field of electric power, and various research and development (R&D) studies are in progress. According to different research results, vegetable oil and synthetic ester manufacturing technology, thermal stability, oxidation stability, property change, and quality control, which are characteristics of eco-friendly electrical insulating oils, are major factors affecting the maintenance of insulating oil properties. In addition, power companies have established and operated quality control standards according to the use of eco-friendly electrical insulating oil as they expand the exploitatoin of renewable energy in electricity production. In particular, deterioration and oxidation characteristics were jointly identified in R&D as an important influencing factor according to the content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids present in vegetable oils and synthetic esters in power transformer applications.

  • Until now rubber industry field has used organic solvent base adhesive, there was always existed a fire risk, variety of quality and harmfulness of human body. To solve this problem we were developed a new adhesive that was maked by raw materials of hydrocarbon series which has the properties of nonvolatile and high flash point. Because of this new adhesive has the properties of nonvolatile and non-harmfulness to the human body, we expected to solve the problems of a fire hazard and the pollution of the environmental. Instead of the rubber binder that is used to a present adhesive, the new idea is adopted in a new type of adhesive. Nonvolatile solvent penetrated to the rubber surface and caused the swelling in rubber surface and as a result of this action, it has the self-adhesive power. In comparision with the present adhesive a new type of adhesive remarkably improved the maintenance time of adhesion and the durability of this adhesive showed similar aspect. Because it did not exhibit a drop of physical properties of rubber which was caused by swelling effect, we estimate that new type adhesive are very stable and not reacted to several rubber additives. While present adhesive appear the crack at cutting surface of curing rubber that caused by gas, new type adhesive not exist these crack.

  • Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used for automatic transmissions in the vehicle as the characterized fluid. Recently, the vehicle manufacture usually guarantee for fluid change over 80000~100000 km mileage or no exchange, but most drivers usually change ATF below every 50000 km driving in Republic of Korea. It can cause to raise environmental contamination by used ATF and increase the cost of driving by frequently ATF change. In this study, we investigate the various physical properties such as flash point, fire point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, cold cranking simulator, total acid number, and metal component concentration for fresh and used ATF after driving (50000 km, 100000 km). The result showed that the total acid number, pour point, Fe, Al and Cu component had increased than fresh ATF, but 2 kind of used oil (50000 km and 100000km) had similar physical values and metal component concentration.
