In this paper the noise characteristics of metro train is investigated experimentally. It is primarily aimed at observing the squealing noise radiation of each wheel when the vehicle pass the curve sections. This will be used to understand the noise excitation mechanism at the contact area between squealing wheels and rails which induce squeal noise at curve sections. To identify the related key parameters and boundary conditions on-board monitorings of the noise, vibration of the wheel and bogie and displacement behaviour of the wheels and rails have been done. In this paper only noise measurement and results are discussed. From spectrogramms squeal noise due to creepage and noise due to flange contact of the wheels could be identified. At the moment of the curve passing the highest squeal levels are found on the front inner wheel. However since curve noise depends on variable factors more analyses will be followed to identify the squealing wheels and the noise excitation.

In this paper, a finite element analysis technique of rolling stock models for collision-induced derailments was suggested using rolling contacts for wheel-rail interaction. The collision-induced derailments of rolling stock can be categorized into two patterns of wheel-climb and wheel-lift according to the friction direction between wheel flange and rail. The wheel-climb derailment types are classified as Climb-up, Climb/roll-over and Roll-over-C types, and the wheel-lift derailment types as Slip-up, Slip/roll-over and Roll-over-L types. To verify the rolling contact simulations for wheel-rail interaction, dynamic simulations of a single wheelset using Recurdyn of Functionbay and Ls-Dyna of LSTC were performed and compared for the 6-typical derailments. The collision-induced derailment simulation of the finite element model of KHST (Korean High Speed Train) was conducted and verified using the theoretical predictions of a simplified wheel-set model proposed for each derailment type.

In the present work, rigid-plastic continuum elements employing the shape change and anisotropic effects are derived for the purpose of applying more realistic blankholding force condition in three-dimensional finite element analysis of sheet metal forming process. In order to incorporate the effect of shape change effectively in the derivation of finite element equation using continuum element for sheet metal forming, the convected coordinate system is introduced, rendering the analysis more rigorous and accurate. The formulation is extended to cover the orthotropic material using Hill's quadratic yield function. For the purpose of applying more realistic blankholding force condition, distributed normal and associated frictional tangent forces are employed in the blankholder, which is pressed normal and associated frictional tangent forces are employed in the blankholder, which is pressed against the flange until the resultant contact force with the blank reaches the prescribed value. As an example of sheet metal forming process coupling the effect of planar anisotropy and that of blankholding boundary condition, circular cup deep drawing has been analyzed considering both effects together.
Turbopump is typically an assembly of rotors and casings, and there are a number of joints between them. Every joint should be leak-proof, so there is always a seal to accomplish the goal. Among various seals, metal seals are advantageous in that they are robust at high pressure, and at wide range of temperature. On the other hand, they require very high tightening forces, so that flanges, bolts and nuts should be carefully designed to ensure structural integrity and to prevent detrimental yielding of components. In this study, flange joints using conical seals made of stainless steel, solid flat metal seals made of copper and metal C-seals made of Inconel 718 were structurally designed and analyzed, considering both initial tightening and operating conditions.
The derailment is defined as phenomena in which the wheels run off the rail due to inordinate lateral force generated when wheel flange contacts with the rail. Derailment coefficient is typical standard assessing running safety and derailment. The traditional method measuring by strain gage adhered to wheels is very complicated and easy to fail. It also requires too much cost and higher measurement technique. Therefore it can hardly ensure safety because we can't confirm at which time we need to identify safety. In this paper, we principally researched the method measuring easily wheel load generated by contacts between wheel flange and the rail, and lateral force. Correlation of vibration and displacement which was related physical amounts of wheel load and lateral force, was investigated and analyzed through analysis, experiment and measurement. And it is presents new measurement method of derailment coefficient which can estimate derailment possibility only by movement of vibration and displacement, by which we understand the rate for acceleration and displacement to contribute wheel load and lateral force and compare actual data of wheel load and lateral force measured from wheel.
Blind rivet nuts are increasingly used in automotive for the joining of sheets. Their application, however, requires appropriate design guides to prevent catastrophic events arising from the failure of joints. In this study, the shaft shape of a frequently used M8 blind rivet nut is optimized based on 3D numerical analysis of the blind rivet nut considering the characteristics of thread. The thread needs to be modeled to suitably consider the fastening of the M8 bolt after the crimping process. FE analysis showed that while the friction in the contact between crimp flange and plate has no significant effect on the crimp geometry, shaft thickness (t) and shaft height (h) are the most significant design variables. The parameter study including various combinations of t and h reveals that they affect the gap (the distance between the crimped flange and the plate that develops through riveting) and the load acting on the plate. The gap is an indicator of the tightening force. It is found that t is inversely proportional to the gap, and proportional to the load, whereas h is proportional to the gap and inversely proportional to the load. Based on our FE analysis results, we propose the range 0.062 < t/h < 0.1 to ensure sufficient fastening (high clamping load, small gap) of the M8 blind rivet nut. The design guide for determining the t/h ratio proposed in this study can be used for general quantitative analysis of the size and the t/h ratio of blind rivet nuts.
Rail provides running tract for train and broadly and widely conveys the weight of the train exerted from the train wheels that the rail directly supports onto the cross tie and roadbed, and supports the cross-sectional pressure exerted by centrifugal force at curvatures. That is, stationary rail provides surface on which dynamic train runs and guarantees cross-sectional resistance to enable the vertical snake motion of the train wheels as well as to maintain lateral force at curvatures. Rail provides running surface on which train wheels can run smoothly, and secures vertical and lateral force. However, it undergoes continuous destructive reactions (wearing and damages) and abrasion of the cladding by the train wheels. It is obvious that wearing will result when two metal parts act against each other. However, occurrence of abnormal wearing such as rapid wearing of the rail side due to complex generation of various mechanisms at the contact surface between the rail and train wheel flange. It is not easy to simply examine the causes of occurrence of abnormal wearing of rail and train wheel flange. Although countless number of academicians and specialists are conducting researches on abnormal wearing of rail and vertical wearing of train wheels, I believe it is too early to argue on pros and cons due to insufficiency of officially verified information on the issue. This review will be focusing on the examples of repairs that reduced the generation of abnormal wearing of rail by reviewing and improving characteristics of wearing and slack, speed of the train and cant as well as status of lubricator by choosing the compound curves present in the section between the $Anguk{\sim}Jongno3-ga$ Stations of the Route No. 3 among the compound curve tracks of the Seoul Metro Routes No. 3 & 4 at which abnormal wearing is generated continuously.
This paper presents some of the results from an experimental research project on the behavior of extended end-plate connections subjected to moment conducted at the Structural Laboratory of Jordan University of Science and Technology. Since the connection behavior affects the structural frame response, it must be included in the global analysis and design. In this study, the behavior of six full-scale stiffened and unstiffened cantilever connections of HEA- and IPE-sections has been investigated. Eight high strength bolts were used to connect the extended end-plate to the column flange in each case. Strain gauges were installed inside each of the top six bolts in order to obtain experimentally the actual tension force induced within each bolt. Then the connection behavior is characterized by the tension force in the bolt, extended end-plate behavior, moment-rotation relation, and beam and column strains. Some or all of these characteristics are used by many Standards; therefore, it is essential to predict the global behavior of column-beam connections by their geometrical and mechanical properties. The experimental test results are compared with two theoretical (equal distribution and linear distribution) approaches in order to assess the capabilities and accuracy of the theoretical models. A simple model of the joint is established and the essential parameters to predict its strength and deformational behavior are determined. The equal distribution method reasonably determined the tension forces in the upper two bolts while the linear distribution method underestimated them. The deformation behavior of the tested connections was characterized by separation of the column-flange from the extended end-plate almost down to the level of the upper two bolts of the lower group and below this level the two parts remained in full contact. The neutral axis of the deformed joint is reasonably assumed to pass very close to the line joining the upper two bolts of the lower group. Smooth monotonic moment-rotation relations for the all tested frames were observed.

In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.

Once hot forgings for automotive parts such as wheel bearing flange to which cyclic asymmetric bending stress is continuously applied are produced, it is necessary to control their microstructure to obtain superior mechanical properties. It is however hard to control the microstructure uniformly because the strength is reduced as coarsening of ferrite grains. To investigate the microstructural alteration according to process variables during hot working, the variation of the ferrite grain size was studied by utilizing of the computer aided servo-hydraulic Gleeble tester which is hot deformation behavior reproduction equipment. In addition, the effect of the ferrite grain size of raw material on the austenite grain behavior of hot forgings was also examined. The rolling contact fatigue resistance of the induction hardened SAE 1055 steel was compared with the occasion of the same condition of SAE52100 bearing steel. As a result, it was confirmed that the ferrite grain sizes of the forgings depend on the heating temperature and cooling start temperature during hot forging and cooling processes. The induction hardened SAE1055 steel showed a superior rolling contact fatigue resistance to the induction hardened SAE52100 steel. The reason is that SAE1055 steel is freer from the material defect such as segregation than the comparative steel.
