Experimental study on the Formation and Growth of Silica Particles in $H_2/O_2$ Diffusion Flame by Electro-Spraying Method and Evaporation ($H_2/O_2$확산화염에서 전기수력학적 방법과 증발기에 의해 발생된 입자의 성장 비교에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Flame aerosol synthesis technology refers to the formation of fine particles from gases in flame and is widely used in practical materials processing. In this paper, an experimental investigation was performed on growth of the silica particles that were generated in $H_2/O_2$ Diffusion Flame by the direct injection or TEOS using Electro-spraying method. in this flame aerosol synthesis, four main parameters or nos interaction (flame temperature, residence time or particle in flame, TEOS flow rate, applied voltage) for particle generation and growth was investigated along the axial direction above the burner. A fairly monodisperse non-aggregated particles were successfully obtained.

  • The study on synthesis of carbon nanomaterials by H2 mixing in counterflow methane diffusion flames has been experimentally conducted. We have also investigated on effect of catalyst and temperature in flame. The counterflow flame was formed by many kind of gas (fuel side using $CH_4-H_2-N_2$ and oxidizer side $N_2-O_2$) and nitrogen shields discharge on each other side to cut off oxidizer of the atmosphere. Ferrocene was used as a metal catalyst for CNTs synthesis. substrate was used to deposit carbon nanomaterials and these were analyzed by FE-SEM. We could find that carbon nanotubes and many kind of carbon nano materials were formed in Cu wire substrate, through this experiment.

Synthesis and Process Development of Ultrafine Ti Powder by Sodium Flame Encapsulation Method (Sodium Flame Encapsulation 방법에 의한 초미립 Ti 분말 합성 및 공정개발)

  • Synthesis and process development of nano-size Ti powder by SFE(Sodium/halide Flame Encapsulation) method were investigated. Four concentric coflow burner was used and its flame configuration was $TiCl_4/Ar/Na/Ar$ in order from the center. Flame has been controlled by the various processing parameters such as temperature of burner and flow rates of both $TiCl_4$(g) precursor and Na(g). It was found that yellow-colored flame was shown in the flow rates of 70cc/min of $TiCl_4$(g) precursor and 2 $\ell$ /min of Na(g) which were regarded as optimum flame condition. The powders encapsuled by NaCl were produced having the average powder size of 250nm. The results of X-ray diffraction showed that powders from the optimized condition consisted of pure Ti and NaCl. TEM analysis confirmed that the several Ti powders of 20-100nm were encapsulated with NaCl. After removing sodium chloride by heat treatment, the spherical Ti powders with the size range of 80 to 150nm were obtained.

  • Joints of three-dimensional (3D) rutile-type (r) tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) nanowire networks, produced by the flame transport synthesis (FTS), are formed by coherent twin boundaries at $(101)^r$ serving for the interpenetration of the nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods, i.e. high resolution and (precession) electron diffraction (PED), were utilized to collect information of the atomic interface structure along the edge-on zone axes $[010]^r$, $[111]^r$ and superposition directions $[001]^r$, $[101]^r$. A model of the twin boundary is generated by a supercell approach, serving as base for simulations of all given real and reciprocal space data as for the elaboration of three-dimensional, i.e. relrod and higher order Laue zones (HOLZ), contributions to the intensity distribution of PED patterns. Confirmed by the comparison of simulated and experimental findings, details of the structural distortion at the twin boundary can be demonstrated.

Fabrication of Transition-metal-incorporated TiO2 Nanopowder by Flame Synthesis (화염법에 의한 천이금속 첨가 이산화티타늄 나노분말의 제조)

  • Nanopowders of titanium dioxide $(TiO_2)$ incorporating the transition metal element(s) were synthesized by flame synthesis method. Single element among Fe(III), Cr(III), and Zn(II) was doped into the interior of $TiO_2$ crystal; bimetal doping of Fe and Zn was also made. The characteristics of transition-metal-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowders in the particle feature, crystallography and electronic structures were determined with various analytical tools. The chemical bond of Fe-O-Zn was confirmed to exist in the bimetal-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowders incorporating Fe-Zn. The transition element incorporated in the $TiO_2$ was attributed to affect both Ti 3d orbital and O 2p orbital by NEXAFS measurement. The bimetal-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowder showed light absorption over more wide wavelength range than the single-doped $TiO_2$ nanopowders.

Pt Coating on Flame-Generated Carbon Particles (화염법을 이용한 Pt/C 촉매 제조)

  • Carbon black, activated carbon and carbon nanotube have been used as supporting materials for precious metal catalysts used in fuel cell electrodes. One-step flame synthesis method is used to coat 2-5nm Pt dots on flame-generated carbon particles. By adjusting flame temperature, gas flow rates and resident time of particles in flame, we can obtain Pt/C nano catalyst-support composite particles. Additional injection of hydrogen gas facilitates pyrolysis of Pt precursor in flame. The size of as-incepted Pt dots increases along the flame due to longer resident time and sintering in high temperature flame. Surface coverage and dispersion of the Pt dots is varied at different sampling heights and confirmed by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystalinity and surface bonding groups of carbon are investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Four excellent halogen-free biphosphonate flame retardants (EBDMP, EBDEP, MBDMP, MBDEP) were synthesized through polycondensation and Arbuzov rearrangement reactions without using any solvents. The products were characterized by ESI-MS, FT-IR and $^1H$ NMR. The application of EBDEP in polyurethane soft foam was studied and the results illustrated its excellent flame-proofing properties.

  • In this study, a novel phosphorus-containing flame retardant copolymer of spirocyclic pentaerythritol di(phosphate monochloride) and bisphenol S (SPD-BS) was successfully synthesized and used as a flame retardant in diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resins. The chemical structure of the SPD-BS was characterized using FT-IR and $^1H$ NMR spectra. The thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of SPD-BS and nano-$CaCO_3$ on the flame-retardant properties of DGEBA/SPD-BS systems were evaluated by measurement of the burning rate. As a result, the thermal stabilities of the DGEBA/SPD-BS systems were decreased with increasing SPD-BS content. The flame-retardant properties and char yields of the systems were significantly increased when SPD-BS content increased. The synergism of nano-$CaCO_3$ incorporation on flame retardancy was found for the DGEBA/SPD-BS systems.

Synthesis and Flame Retardant Improvement of PU Coatings Containing Trichloro Modified Polyester/IPDI-Isocyanurate

  • Two component polyurethane (PU) flame retardant coatings were prepared by blending trichloro modified polyesters (TCMPs) and isophorone diisocyanate isocyanurate. TCMPs were synthesized by polycondensation of trichlorobenzoic acid (TCBA), a flame retardant component, with adipic acid, 1,4 butanediol, and trimethylolpropane. The content of TCBA was varied in 10, 20, and 30 wt% for the reaction. Theses new flame retardant coatings showed various properties comparable to other non flame retardant coatings. Moreover, we carried out the combustion test and the flammability test for our flame retardant coatings. The results of vertical burning test for the coatings containing more than 20 wt% of TCBA were determined as no burn. The results of flammability test for the coatings with 20 wt% and 30 wt% of TCBA contents indicated the limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of 26% and 29% respectively, which implied relatively good flame retardancy.
