A numerical simulation was conducted to analyze the interaction of flame and vortices. The characteristic scales of flame and vortices were limited in the thin laminar flamelet regime. Within this regime, flame is assumed as discontinuity surface and its motion in flow field was described by G-equation instead of full governing equations. Additional approximations include distribution of line volume sources on flame surface to simulate effect of volume expansion. Contrast to previous calculations, current study employed vortex transport equation to evaluate attenuation and smearing of vortices. Two extreme conditions of frozen vortex and frozen flame were considered to validate the current method. Comparison with direct numerical simulation resulted in satisfactory quantitative agreement with higher computational efficiency which warrants the usefulness of the present model in more complex situation.

Flame behaviors and interaction between pilot and main flames in a dual swirl combustor were investigated experimentally and numerically. Under the condition of fixed swirl angle of $45^{\circ}$ for main flame, the swirl angle of pilot flame, total heat release rate and equivalence ratio of main flame were used as major parameters. As a result, detailed flame stability diagram of dual swirl combustor was identified in terms of 5 flame modes with the changes in total heat release rate and equivalence ratio of main flame. It was found that the swirl angle of pilot flame plays the most important role in the changes in flame location and overall flow structure inside the combustor, and thus leads to the significant change in the interaction between pilot and main flame.
Experimental investigations were performed to assess the influences of different multiple obstacles on flame propagation in a rectangular confinement. Three different multiple obstacles were used: circular, triangular and square cross-sections with blockage ratios of 15% and 30%. The same method described in Park et al. [13] to investigate the interaction between the propagating flame and the obstacle was applied. Before the freely propagating flame impinged on the obstacle, the flame propagation speed remains close to the laminar burning velocity, regardless of the obstacles used. The reported data revealed that the trend in increase of the local flame propagation speed is a result of the interaction between the obstacle and the propagating flame front behind the obstacle. The local speed was found to increase from a circular to a triangular and a square obstacle. The mean flame speed was found to be less dependent on both the obstacle types and the different blockage ratios used.
Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.

The effects of preferential diffusion of hydrogen in interacting counterflow $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames were investigated numerically. The global strain rate was varied in the range $30-5917s^{-1}$, where the upper bound of this range corresponds to the flame-stretch limit. Preferential diffusion of hydrogen was studied by comparing flame structures for a mixed average diffusivity with those where the diffusivities of H, $H_2$ and $N_2$ were assumed to be equal. Flame stability diagrams are presented, which show the mapping of the limits of the concentrations of $H_2$ and CO as a function of the strain rate. The main oxidation route for CO is $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$, which is characterized by relatively slow chemical kinetics; however, a much faster route, namely $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$, can be significant, provided that hydrogen from the $H_2$-air flame is penetrated and then participates in the CO-oxidation. This modifies the flame characteristics in the downstream interaction between the $H_2$-air and CO-air flames, and can cause the interaction characteristics at the rich and lean extinction boundaries not to depend on the Lewis number of the deficient reactant, but rather to depend on chemical interaction between the two flames. Such anomalous behaviors include a partial opening of the upper lean extinction boundary in the interaction between a lean $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame, as well as the formation of two islands of flame sustainability in a partially premixed configuration with a rich $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame. At large strain rates, there are two islands where the flame can survive, depending on the nature of the interaction between the two flames. Furthermore, the preferential diffusion of hydrogen extends both the lean and the rich extinction boundaries.
The interaction between methane and hydrogen premixed flames with the different equivalence ratio and global strain rate was investigated numerically in one-dimensional counterflow field. The OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used to simulate the interacting flames. Overall trends in the maximum heat release rates of $CH_4{^-}$ and $H_2$-side flame were examined with the variation of $a_g$. The interaction mode of the flames were classified according to the equivalence ratios and Lewis numbers of each flame and global strain rate.
The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex and flame-vortex interaction in a $CH_4/Air$ diffusion flame with addition of $CO_2$ were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow. A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. Through comparison of results by effect of $CO_2$ added either on the fuel or oxidizer side, it was found that the growth of single vortex and entrainment of surrounding fluid by $CO_2$addition on the fuel side are larger than those by $CO_2$ addition on oxidizer side. Also, when $CO_2$ is added on fuel side, flame-vortex interaction becomes more significant than on air side.

Extinction characteristics of the two interacting premixed flames are analyzed for the effects of flame stretch and preferential diffusion using large activation energy asymptotic analysis by adopting counterflow system as a model problem. Results show that the flammable limit of the thermally interacting premixed flames is extended compared to the single flame, and the extinction mechanism is classified into weak and strong interactions. As the lewis number of the deficient species increases, the region of strong interaction diminishes which can explain the different characteristics of the extinction boundaries of the lean (rich) methane/air and butane/air flames. The influence of the flame stretch to the interaction boundaries is also studied.

The SRS method is applied to a turbulent flame with radiation/turbulence interaction to invert the temperature and concentration profile. The flame is conditioned as optically thin per each fluctuation length and the flame spectral intensity is measured for inversion. From inversion result, we find that SRS can successfully invert the coupled temperature/concentration fluctuation amplitudes. For two cases of experiments, inverted values are within approximately 1% over the full range of fluctuation amplitude. However, SRS cannot find the detailed local fluctuation parameters such as pattern and phase, etc. as far as they do not affect the resulting radiation intensity. Important available parameters are the mean temperature and the temperature fluctuation amplitude. The radiation/turbulence interaction effect is verified to play an important role in the radiation.
The LES-based level-set flamelet model has been applied to analyze the turbulent propane/air premixed bluff-body flame with a highly wrinkled flame fronts. The present study has been motivated to investigate the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies. Special emphasis is given to study the effect of G equation filtering treatment on the precise structure of turbulent premixed flames as well as the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The level-set/flamelet model has been adopted to account for the effect of turbulence-flame interaction as well as to properly capture the flame front. Numerical results indicate that the present LES-based level-set flamelet approach has a capability to realistically simulate the highly non-stationary turbulent premixed flame.
