Cavitation erosion properties of the Cu-9Al-4.5Ni-4.5Fe alloys (Al-bronze) surface-modified by flame quenching process have been investigated. After flame quenching at above $T_{\beta}$, the surfaces of Al-bronze with $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$ structure have been changed into the $\alpha$ + $\beta$' martensite phases by the eutectoid reaction of $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$\longrightarrow$\beta$ followed by the martensite transformation of $\beta$\longrightarrow$\beta$'. As a result of cavitation test, the measured incubation time and erosion rate of the $\alpha$ + $\beta$' alloy was 1.2 times higher and 1.5 times lower, respectively, compared to those of the conventional $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$ alloys, showing a remarkable increase of cavitation resistance with the formation of $\beta$' martensite. This is attributed to a preferential erosion of the $\textsc{k}$ precipitates that show the lowest resistance among the $\alpha$, $\textsc{k}$, $\beta$' phases under cavitation loading.ases under cavitation loading.
The flame quenching process has been employed to modify the surfaces of commercial marine propeller material, aluminum bronze alloy (Cu-8.8Al-5Ni-5Fe), and the microstructure, hardness and wear properties of the flame-quenched layers have been studied. The thermal history was accurately monitored during the process with respect to both the designed maximum surface temperature and holding time. The XRD and EDX analyses have shown that at temperatures above $T_{\beta}$, the microstructure consisting of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ phases changed into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite due to an eutectoid reaction of ${\alpha}+{\kappa}{\rightarrow}{\beta}$ and a martensitic transformation of ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\beta}^{\prime}$. The ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite phase formed showed a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure with the typical twinned structure. The hardness of the flame-quenched layer having the ${\alpha}+{\beta}^{\prime}$ structure was similar to that of the ${\alpha}+{\kappa}$ structure and depended sensitively on the size and distribution of hard ${\kappa}$ and ${\beta}^{\prime}$ phases with depth from the surface. As a result of the sliding wear test, the wear resistance of the flame-quenched layer was markedly enhanced with the formation of the ${\beta}^{\prime}$ martensite.
In this study, a non-halogen type organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardant sol, which can impart flame resistance to synthesize silicate of inorganic material and silane coupling agent of organic material by a sol-gel method, were newly manufactured. The addition of flame retardant will prevent loss of life in a fire because smoke from the flammability of interior finishing materials used as the construction materials poses a major danger. The smoke density measurement standard based on flame retardant performance standards, experiments were conducted according to the test equipment and procedures of ASTM E 662. The non-flaming mode experiment and the flaming mode experiment were conducted to confirm the performance of the manufactured flame retardant sol. As a result, the manufactured flame retardant sol improved the physical properties and heat resistance of existing flame retardants, and decreased the smoke production of the fire. Therefore, it may be possible to reduce the damage caused by smoke and expand the applications to various interior finishing materials.
Wooden cultural heritages of Korea have been destroyed by fire in many cases. As a result, a number of methods to protect wooden cultural properties against fire were introduced. A way of protecting wooden cultural properties installations of fire equipments such as sprinkler, fire alarm system, or fire extinguisher. Another way of protecting wooden cultural properties is to treat them with flame retardants for their safety. Development of a very effective flame retardant with a good performance without affecting danchung and wood quality is required. At the same time, methods of evaluating flame retardant treated woods should be devised to assess their efficacy. In this study, combustion characteristics using cone-calorimeter, limit oxygen index, moisture absorption, iron corrosive and weathering were analyzed to evaluate the flame resistance efficacy and performance of flame retardants treated woods. The evaluation methods of flame retardants for wooden cultural heritage were suggested.
In this study, flame retardancy of polyurethane foam and phenolic foam were investigated by addition of phosphorous flame retardants. The thermal degradation behavior of polyurethane foam and phenolic foam in the presence of flame retardants has been studied by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). Heat release rate(HRR), mean HRR, mass loss rate(MLR), total smoke released(TSR) and limited oxygen index(LOI) were tested by cone calorimeter. From the test results, Phenolic foam showed low HRR, MLR and TSR than polyurethane foam.
The dichloro-polyester polyol (DCBAO) which was synthesized in our earlier work was cured at room temperature with two different type of curing agents including Desmodur N-3300 and Desmodur L-75 to get a polyurethane flame-retardant coatings (DCBAO/N-3300=DEBAN and DCBAO/L-75=DCBAL). We could not observe any deterioration of physical properties of the flame-retardant PU coatings (UCBAN and DCBAL) in comparison with the conventional PU coatings. Thermal resistance of DCBAL-type flame-retardant coatings, which was measured by yellowness index difference, was inferior to that of DCBAL-type PU coatings. We believe that this phenomena is attributed to the poor thermal resistance of Desmodur L-75 isocyanate. It was observed that the LOI values were 25∼26% for the PU coatings containing 20∼30 wt% of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid.

In this study, two materials treated with a flame retardant were examined for their fire resistance. The first, MDF (medium density fiberboard) was overlaid by an oak sliced veneer, which was either treated by soaking in a 6wt.% solution of flame retardant chemicals (pentabromine-chlorinated paraffin) or non-treated and then was coated with either a flame retardant polyurethane coating or with a common polyurethane coating. The second material, Pinus koraiensis penal was either treated by a spray treatment using a flame retardant solution or non-treated and then was coated with either a flame retardant polyurethane coating or with a common polyurethane coating. Pentabromine-chorinated paraffin chemicals were added (6 part of urethane resin) as the flame retardant chemicals in the polyurethane coatings. In the fire resistance test, the th𝜃(℃·min) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and the flame retardant coatings, compared to the untreated sample Weight loss (%) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and the flame retardant coatings. The ignition time (sec.) increased and the residual flame time (sec.) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and flame retardant coatings. Therefore, the flame retardant treatment or/and flame retardant polyurethane coatings have excellent incombustibility.
The present paper is a study on the performance characteristics of organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardants. MDF plywood has been used, that are being used for the interior decoration of building structures, to make the samples for experiment according to the existing or non-existing treatment of organic-inorganic hybrid flame resistants. Later, the experiment on the measurement of flame retardant performance using a $45^{\circ}$ flammability tester and the experiment on the measurement of combustion characteristic using a cone calorimeter have been proceeded to confirm the performance characteristic of organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardants. From the result of experiments, it has been confirmed that both organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardants have merits of inorganic and organic substances, and that heat resistance, durability and adhesiveness have been largely improved. The performance on the flame retardant has also appeared with excellent effect such as the reduced generation of combustion gas and the decreased generation of smoke.
Aluminum Hydroxide was employed as a thermal retardent and flame retardent for Chloropolyethylene (CPE) rubbery materials which is the construction material of automotive oil cooler hose. and then cure characteristics, physical properties, thermal resistance and flame retardation of compounded rubber were investigated, and optimum mixing conditions of rubber and flame retarding agent were deduced from the experimental results. CPE rubber material which has excellent properties of chemical corrosion resistance and cold resistance and inexpensive in price was used to prepare rubber specimen. The by-product of ething, produced from the process of surface treatment of aluminum was processed to aluminum hydroxide via crushing and purification, which is characterized by XRD, PSA, SEM and ICP-AES techniques in terms of phase, size, distribution, morphology and components of particles and then mixed to CPE rubber materials in the range of 0~80 phr. Hardness, tensile strength, elongation and thermal properties of compounded rubber specimens were tested. The optimum mixing ratio of rubber to additives to give maximum effect on thermal resistance and flame retardation, within the range of tolerable specification for rubber materials, was determined to be 40 phr. The flame retardation of CPE rubber materials was found to be increased by 5 times at this mixing ratio.
