  • This paper describes the system configuration and measured performances of a wireless power transmission system which utilizes microwave. The technically final target of this system is to provide DC power to various mobile terminals within limited spaces such as buildings, conference rooms, and so on. The prototype system is built using in-house designed and fabricated circuits such as microwave oscillator, high power amplifier, microstrip patch antenna, low pass filter, and detector/rectifier. The fixed RF power of 29.3dBm at 2.4GHz is produced from the high power amplifier and transmitted through the transmitting antenna, while the received RF power at the receiving antenna is transformed into DC power through the detector/rectifier. The measured change of DC voltage according to the distance between transmitting and receiving antenna is described.

  • So far, the remote sensing technology has widely been used in a variety of application areas such as military, medical imaging, environment, geology and so forth. The microwave remote sensing uses the wavelengths ranging from around one centimeter up to a few tens of centimeters and is known to be very effective regardless of the weather conditions and the day/night time as compared with the reflective InfraRed (IR) remote sensing or the thermal IR remote sensing. There are three generic modes of synthetic aperture radar imaging systems depending on its application, that is, stripmap mode, spotlight mode, or inverse mode. In this article we focus on the issue of imaging of flying aircrafts for the inverse mode of a ground - based, fixed radar with moving objects. The imaging of flying aircrafts is considered to be an important step for the automatic target recognition systems, and therefore a great deal of efforts have recently been made on the subject. Here we review the three representative methods including the Fourier transform processing, the time - frequency processing, and the reconstruction from the projection. Some relative merits and drawbacks are also discussed.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) thin films become superhard when they have microstructures of nanocolumnar crystalline grains (NCCG) with an intergranular amorphous SiC matrix. We investigated the role of ion bombardment and deposition temperature in forming the NCCG in SiC thin films. A direct-current (DC) unbalanced magnetron sputtering method was used with pure Ar as sputtering gas to deposit the SiC thin films at fixed target power of 200 W and chamber pressure of 0.4 Pa. The Ar ion bombardment of the deposited films was conducted by applying a negative DC bias voltage 0-100 V to the substrate during deposition. The deposition temperature was varied between room temperature and $450^{\circ}C$. Above a critical bias voltage of -80 V, the NCCG formed, whereas, below it, the SiC films were amorphous. Additionally, a minimum thermal energy (corresponding to a deposition temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ in this study) was required for the NCCG formation. Transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and glancing angle X-ray diffraction analysis (GAXRD) were conducted to probe the samples' structural characteristics. Of those methods, Raman spectroscopy was a particularly efficient non-destructive tool to analyze the formation of the SiC NCCG in the film, whereas GAXRD was insufficiently sensitive.

  • Experiments were carried out to obtain the effects of nozzle configuration and jet to jet spacing on the heat transfer characteristics of single line of circular water jets impinging on a constant heat flux plane surface. The nozzle configurations are Cone type, Reverse cone type and Vertical circular type, and the nozzle arrays are single jet(nozzle dia. 8 mm), 1 row of 3 jets and 1 row of 5 jets. Jet velocities ranging from 3m/s to 8m/s were investigated for the nozzle to target plate spacing of 80 mm. For the Cone and Reverse cone type nozzle arrays, the average Nusselt number of 1 row of 5 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 3 jets at Re$_{D}$<45000, but that of 1 row of 3 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 5 jets at $Reo\le45000$. For the Vertical circular type nozzle, however, the average Nusselt number of 1 row of 3 jets was larger than that of 1 row of 5 jets at all jet velocities. In the condition of fixed mass flow rates, the maximum heat transfer augmentation was obtained for 1 row of 5 jets and was over 2 times larger than that of the single jet for all nozzle configurations. The nozzle configurations that produce the maximum average Nusselt number are as follows: For 1 row of 3 jets, the Vertical circular type at $Reo\le45000$ and the Reverse cone type at $Reo\le45000$. But, they are the Reverse cone type at Re$_{D}$<55000 and the Vertical circular type at$Reo\le55000$ for 1 row of 5 jets.

  • For a preemptive strike against a Time Critical Target(TCT), such as Transporter-Erector-Launcher(TEL), the detection capability of capturing launch signals in the Area of Interest(AoI) is important. In this study, the characteristics of the revisit time and the response time of 6~48 small SAR constellation satellites were analyzed. In particular, the revisit time was analyzed for all regions of North Korea and specific regions, and the response time was classified into [Scenario 1] to identify fixed targets and [Scenario 2] to detect and identify moving targets. In particular, the response time analysis for the TCT detection mission operation in [scenario 2] was performed through optimization analysis of observation cumulative coverage for a specific area. Finally, the configuration of constellation satellites for optimal performance of the detection mission was estimated.

  • The target of managing electronic records should be the trusted record services to the end-users. The natural characteristics of electronic records yields the drawback in the authenticity aspect and in the integrity aspect, and current standards and methodologies have beed developed to treat this drawback. However the authenticity and the integrity concepts is hardly separated each other and too completed, so alternative "source" concept is introduced and a verification strategy for the origin of electronic records is discussed in this paper. According to this concept, current standards and methodologies may be criticized for the negligence of necessary information organizing/verification, the doubtful long-term verification, and the missing counter-strategy for the verification-failed records. To solve this, needed facters for origin verification is described, new preservation format divided into temporally-fluctuating (variable) part and immutable (fixed) part is proposed, and a strategy to prevent, avoidance, and detection/recovery important records is suggested.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) is used by the semiconductor industry, and is a compound that is required when manufacturing high thermal conductivity. The AlN films with c-axis orientation and thermal conductivity characteristic were deposited by using the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The AlN thin films were characterized by changing the deposition conditions. In particular, we have researched the AlN thin film deposited under optimal conditions for growth atmosphere. The epitaxial AlN films were grown on sapphire ($c-Al_2O_3$) single crystals by PLD with AlN target. The AlN films were deposited at a fixed temperature of $650^{\circ}C$, while conditions of nitrogen ($N_2$) pressure were varied between 0.1 mTorr and 10 mTorr. The quality of the AlN films was found to depend strongly on the $N_2$ partial pressure that was exerted during deposition. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the integrated intensity of the AlN (002) peak increases as a function the corresponding Full width at half maximum (FWHM) values decreases with lowering of the nitrogen partial pressure. We found that highly c-axis orientated AlN films can be deposited at a substrate temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ and a base pressure of $2{\times}10^{-7}Torr$ in the $N_2$ partial pressure of 0.1 mTorr. Also, it is noted that as the $N_2$ partial pressure decreased, the thermal conductivity increased.

  • The purpose of this study is to rationally determine the priority of seismic reinforcement of main(key) members of bridges. Cable Supported bridge was selected as the evaluation target and the reliability based on the probability distribution was used to evaluate the seismic fragility of the key members as a quantitative indicator. The safety factor, which is a random variable, is considered an artificial (fixed load and live load) load and a natural (earthquake, wind, temperature, etc.) load. The seismic load is applied as a possible earthquake during the lifetime of the bridge. From analyzing the fragility of each key member based on the seismic reliability, it can be concluded that the shoe (23.8%) was the most fragile, where the other members are ranked as place concrete (20.5%), pier (18.9%), foundation (17.3%) and cable (5.0%) respectively.

  • In this research, numerical analysis was performed to determine the effects of hydrogen on biogas combustion for homogeneous charged compression ignition (HCCI) engines. The target engine specifications were a 2300cc displacement volume, 13:1 compression ratio, 15kW of electricity, and 1.2 bar boost pressure. The engine speed was fixed to 1800rpm. By varying the excess air ratio and hydrogen contents, the cylinder pressure, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide were measured as a function of the hydrogen contents. According to preliminary studies related to the reaction mechanism for methane combustion and oxidation, a GRI 3.0 mechanism as the base mechanism was selected for HCCI combustion calculations describing the detailed reaction mechanism. By adding hydrogen, NO was increased while $CO_2$ was decreased. The cylinder pressure was also increased, having advanced timing for the maximum cylinder pressure and pressure rise region. Furthermore, lean operation limits were extended by adding hydrogen to the HCCI engine.
