  • The starter motor noise is usually well identified by the customers since it is operated while the engine is quiet, and leaves distinct impressions of the vehicle. In this study the design of experiments(DOE) was applied to the identification of the noise sources of direct drive starter motor since this process usually requires lengthy analysis and elaborate experiments. In the first stage of the test, five controllable factors(alignment and dynamic unbalance of armature, tightening torques of T/bolt and center bracket bolt, and alignment of the center bracket-yoke-rear bracket), excluding static unbalance, are sorted out of all possible factors. Test results showed that the dynamic unbalance and misalignment of armature are the major factors. However, the error level of the first test was relatively high, indicating that there might be some missing major factors. In the second stage test the results showed that both static and dynamic unbalances are the dominant factors contributing to more than 80% of the overall noise, while the misalignment contributes around 12%. Error of the second test was about 4% that could be considered satisfactory. The noise level of the optimal product was predicted to be reduced by 19dBA, and verification test showed the average noise reduction of 16.8dBA with the standard deviation of 3.2dBA, and proved the usefulness of the whole DOE process.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to analyze on the external ventricular drainage [EVD] related ventriculitis, especially on their risk factors, management, and prevention. Methods : From January 2003 to December 2005, a total of 174 EVD catheters were placed in 112 patients at our institution. Of these patients, EVD-related ventriculitis were developed in 15 cases. Clinical variables such as age, sex, prior clinical diagnosis, placement of EVD insertion, duration of EVD, total numbers of EVD per person, and outcome were analyzed in theses cases to verify the risk factors, causative agents and outcomes. Results : Fifteen cases of EVD related ventriculitis were noted presenting infection incidence of 13.39 % per patient and 8.62% per procedure. Of these, five patients died from sepsis, seven patients were recovered from infection but neurological complications remained and three patients were recovered without any complications. Microbes were obtained from cerebrospinal fluid only in six patients. Acinetobactoer baumanii was the most common pathogen in our study [4 cases]. Among the various risk factors, only the prior clinical diagnosis showed the statistical significance. Patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy after severe brain trauma showed unfavorable outcome because of possible contaminative environment compared with other cases. Conclusion : EVD is considered as a safe procedure with good control of intracranial pressure if meticulous care is provided for EVD procedure and maintenance. With regards to risk factors and prevention, the higher incidence and unfavorable outcome was seen especially in patients with severe head trauma. Thus, special attention is required in these clinical settings.

  • This paper proposes a DEA model for the performance evaluation of each brand of coking coals in an integrated steel mill. The performance is defined as the efficiency which is the ratio of two linear combinations of the output factors to the input factors. There is only one input factor considered in the model : unit price of each brand based on CIF. Five output factors are chosen in consideration of their impact to the quality of cokes such as Ash, VM, LMF, TD, and Rm. Some of the output factors are treated as undesirable in DEA model because the quality criteria are given by the range. The CCR and BCC efficiencies are derived by the DEA model, and the scale efficiency is calculated, too. Each brand of coking coal is classified into four categories according to the CCR and BCC efficiencies, and the most inferior brands are identified as a result. The impact of the input and output factors to the efficiency is analyzed using a multiple regression, then the unit price is revealed as the most critical among them. Also, ANOVA results show that there exist efficiency differences among the coal types and the countries imported, respectively. Finally, the quantitative projection for the inefficient brands is performed if they are to be efficient. The result could be utilized in selecting the good or bad brands of coking coal based on the efficiency in an integrated steel mill. Also, this model will be used to assess the relative efficiency of a new brand of coking coal if it is a candidate to be imported.

  • Purpose: Febrile seizure, the most common type of pediatric convulsive disorder, is a benign seizure syndrome distinct from epilepsy. However, as epilepsy is also common during childhood, we aimed to identify the prognostic factors that can predict epilepsy in children with febrile seizures. Methods: The study comprised 249 children at the Korea University Ansan Hospital who presented with febrile seizures. The relationship between the subsequent occurrence of epilepsy and clinical factors including seizure and fever-related variables were analyzed by multivariate analysis. Results: Twenty-five patients (10.0%) had additional afebrile seizures later and were diagnosed with epilepsy. The subsequent occurrence of epilepsy in patients with a history of febrile seizures was associated with a seizure frequency of more than 10 times during the first 2 years after seizure onset (P<0.001). Factors that were associated with subsequent occurrence of epilepsy were developmental delay (P<0.001), preterm birth (P =0.001), multiple seizures during a febrile seizure attack (P =0.005), and epileptiform discharges on electroencephalography (EEG) (P =0.008). Other factors such as the age at onset of first seizure, seizure duration, and family history of epilepsy were not associated with subsequent occurrence of epilepsy in this study. Conclusion: Febrile seizures are common and mostly benign. However, careful observation is needed, particularly for prediction of subsequent epileptic episodes in patients with frequent febrile seizures with known risk factors, such as developmental delay, history of preterm birth, several attacks during a febrile episode, and epileptiform discharges on EEG.

  • Fatalities from traffic accidents constitute one of the major health issues as well as safety ones in Korea. It has been reported that traffic accident is affected by the combined effects of road. vehicle. and human factors. Over the past few decades, a number of studies have been conducted to find the impact of road geometric factors on traffic safety. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of road geometric factors on traffic safety on Korean expressways. Detailed geometric design data were available from Korea Highway Corporation. Five-year traffic accident data on Honam expressway were collected and analyzed. It was found that following geometric factors influence traffic safety on expressways : radius of curve, curve length, and length of straight section. Furthermore, the existence of I.C. turned out to have a significant impact on traffic safety level. Based on the data analysis several multiple regression forms that relate traffic accident frequencies and geometric factors on expressways are developed.

  • Purpose: To analyze treatment modalities and prognostic factors in patients with Stage I-II endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS). Materials and Methods: Twenty four patients (nineteen with low-grade ESS [LGESS] and five with high-grade ESS [HGESS]) were assessed retrospectively in terms of general characteristics, prognostic factors, treatment methods and survival. Results: Twenty patients were at Stage I and three were at Stage II. The stage of one patient could not be determined. With respect to age and comorbidity, no statistically significant difference was found among disease-free survival (DFS) (p=0.990; p=0.995). However, DFS was significantly shorter in Stage II than Stage I patients (p=0.002). It was also significantly shorter in HGESS patients than in LGESS patients (p=0.000). There was no statistically significant differences among the overall survival (OVS) times of patients with respect to age at diagnosis and comorbid disease (p=0.905; p=0.979) but OVS was significantly shorter in patients with HGESS (p=0.00) and Stage II disease (p=0.001). No statistically significant difference was found with respect to OVS between patients who received radiotherapy (RT) and those who did not receive RT (p=0.055). It was not statistically possible to include other treatment modalities in the analysis because of the small sample size. Conclusions: Grade and stage of a tumour were found to be the most important prognostic factors. It was not possible to determine the optimal surgical method and the effect of adjuvant treatment since the number of cases was insufficient.

  • The living standards of Chinese people are gradually rising, which has led more Chinese students to come to Korea for their academic career. In this respect, it seems significant to find out how clothing involvement affects brand attachment and brand loyalty of Chinese college students in Busan. In this study, we attempt to identify factors of clothing involvement that influence Chinese students' turn of mind towards brand attachment and brand loyalty. The results of our analysis are as follows: 1. Five factors of clothing involvement have been derived: fashion trend, favorable impression, planning, indifference and choice. For brand attachment, three factors of brand show-off, brand gravity and brand pride have been derived. 2. Factors of clothing involvement have positive effects on factors of brand attachment, and brand attachment also have significant effects on brand loyalty. 3. Clothing involvement significantly affects brand loyalty indirectly via brand attachment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze related factors for major nursing diagnoses used in caring for institutionalized elders. Method: This study was a descriptive study. The participants were 92 residents in a long-term care facility in Wonju, selected by convenience sampling. The instrument was a checklist designed on the basis of the related factors suggested by NANDA (1997) and a literature review. Data was collected by chart review, observation, and interviews with the participants. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with the SPSS WIN program. Result: The most frequent nursing diagnosis was 'risk for injury', 'self-esteem disturbance', 'activity intolerance', 'impaired phyical mobility', and 'powerlessness'. The most frequent component for related factors for the five component for each nursing diagnosis was the physical component, followed by the social component. Common related factors for the nursing diagnoses were 'pain', 'change of emotional state/disorder', 'cognitive disorder', 'change of physical structure and function', and 'physical impairment', and 'immobility'. Conclusion: The results of this study can contribute to the development of appropriate nursing intervention programs for elders (eg. 'Injury Prevention Programs', 'Self-esteem Improvement Programs' etc.). Clinical guidelines that gerontological nurses can use to accurately assess health problems and select appropriate nursing interventions may be developed.
