  • The snailfishes (Scorpaenoidei: Liparidae) is a large group requiring taxonomic reviews because of a potential taxonomic confusion due to its great similarity in external morphology between species and a variation of its body color with size. Molecular phylogeny and taxonomic review were conducted for 10 species in 3 genera reported around the Korean waters, which facilitate understanding interrelationship within its family, and further management of fisheries resources. Molecular phylogeny using mitochondrial COI (mtCOI) and nuclear RAG2 (nRAG2) sequences indicates that the reciprocal monophyly of the three genera (Careproctus, Crystallichthys, and Liparis) were supported except Crystallichthys matsushimae, being closely related to Careproctus notosaikaiensis in only mtDNA COI topology. Liparis ingens Gilbert and Burke (1912) was reported as a distinct species differing from L. ochotensis. However, in the present study, comparing L. ingens from Korea with L. ochotensis from Japan and Russia, the two species were well corresponded in their morphology and molecule, therefore, we suggest L. ingens to be treated as a junior synonym of L. ochotensis.

  • We analyzed with HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis photosynthetic pigments and environmental factors, microscopic observations of the phytoplankton and zooplankton in the seawater every month from February 2009 to November 2010 in Haengam Bay. The level of dissolved inorganic nutrients was the highest between July and September, when freshwater influx was at its peak, whereas chlorophyll a levels were the highest in April and August. Also, phytoplankton pigment concentration increased when dissolved inorganic nutrients are carried into nearshore waters by rainfall runoff. Based on identification of phytoplankton and photosynthetic pigments results, diatoms were mainly dominant while dinoflagellate populations increased at July and August 2009, May 2010. The zooplankton communities are dominated in terms of Noctiluca scintillans. The contribution of Noctiluca scintillans in 2010 accounts for approximately 77.3% of the total zooplankton. Distribution patterns over time of zooplankton in the seasonal distribution of phytoplankton showed a different pattern.

  • We investigated regional differences in the growth and maturation rate of Pacific cod in the East and Yellow Seas. Significant regional differences were detected in the von Bertalanffy growth equation and mean length at maturity (L50). Cod in the East Sea grew at a faster rate than those in the Yellow Sea, with females growing faster than males in both populations. Cod of both sexes matured earlier in the Yellow Sea (age of maturity: 2.3 years for males, 2.6 years for females) than in the East Sea (age of maturity: 3.9 years for males, 4 years for females). These regional differences suggest that Pacific cod in the Yellow Sea, which is at the southwestern extremity of global cod distribution and thus likely to be an inhospitable habitat for this species, have adapted to their environment by developing earlier maturation and slower growth than cod in the East Sea or the Korea Strait. These regional differences must be taken into account when setting biological reference points for management of the Pacific cod fishery in Korean waters.

  • Imitation fish roe (IFR) based on calcium alginate hydrogels (CAG) can be heat treated for sterilization and salted to prolong the shelf life. However, these processes change the physical properties of IFR, and it is necessary to minimize these changes. In this study, we investigated the effects of xanthan gum (XG) treatment on the quality and stability of IFR. Both non-XG and XG-treated IFRs were treated with boiling water (95℃), sodium chloride (0.5-2.0%, w/v), and autoclaving. The non-XG treated IFR shrunk slightly after the boiling water and autoclaving processes. By comparison, shrinkage of the XG-treated IFR after autoclaving was significantly reduced. The sphericity of the non-XG treated IFR was reduced by the boiling water, sodium chloride, and autoclaving treatment. However, the sphericity of the XG-treated IFR was maintained by 90% or more, preserving the IFR shape at a level visually recognized as spherical. In addition, unlike the non-XG treated IFR, the XG-treated IFR showed high rupture strength even after the salt and heat treatments. Our findings provide useful information for the industrialization of IFR based on CAG with heat and salt treatments.

  • Red tide(harmful algae) in the Korean Coastal Waters has a given a given damage to the fishery every year. However, the aim of our study understands the influence of meteorological factors (air and water temperature, precipitation sunshine, solar radiation, winds) relating to the mechanism of red tide occurrence and monitors red tide by satellite remote sensing, and analyzes the potential area for red tide occurrence by GIS. The meteorological factors have directly influenced on red tide formation. Thus, We want to predict and apply to red tide formation from statistical analyses on the relationships between red tide formation and meteorological factors. In future, it should be realized the near real time monitoring for red tide by the development of remote sensing technique and the construction of integrated model by the red tide information management system (the data base of red tide - meteorological informations. Finally our purpose is support to the prediction information for the possible red tide occurrence by coastal meteorological information and contribute to reduce the red tide disaster by the prediction technique for red tide.

  • To assess environmental characteristics of the aquaculture area in Tongyeong, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and acid volatile sulfur (AVS) were measured in seawater and sediment samples collected from 10 locations of Tongyeong coastal area from July to December in 2013. The quality of the seawater may be affected by seasonal variation rather than the distance from fish farm. However, sediment was contrary to seawater; the distance from fish farm may be a main factor to affect COD and AVS in sediment than season and other parameters. It is expected that contaminated organic sediments of fishery located in semi-closed bay are rapidly dispersed into surrounding waters due to fast current.

  • The effects of waterborne arsenic (As) exposure on antioxidant defense were studied in liver and gills of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus under thermal stress. Tilapia were exposed to different As concentrations (0, 200 and $400{\mu}g/L$) at three water-temperatures (WT; 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$) for 10 days. In antioxidant response, glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-treansferase (GST) activities were significantly decreased depend on WT in the gills after As exposure. Also, the range of fluctuation in these enzymes activities was most significantly increased at $30^{\circ}C$ in the liver of tilapia exposed to As. The present findings suggest that a simultaneous stress by temperature change and As exposure could accelerate the alteration in antioxidant enzymes activities of tilapia.

  • The study is conducted to establish the National Protected Areas Integrated System(NPAIS) which includes National Protected Areas(NPAs) and other conservation measures in terms of effective ways for biodiversity conservation. Additionally, it is carried out to evaluate progress toward quantitative expansion goals in Aichi biodiversity Target 11. The NPAIS consists of NPAs and other effective area-based conservation measures(OECMs). There are two different types of OECMs. OECMs type I, including water-source protection Areas(WPA), riparian zones(RZ), fishery-resource protection zones (FPZ), and urban natural park zones(UNPZ), is a potential protected area which is recommended to be incorporated into the NPAs for effective management. OECMs type II means development restriction zones(DRZ), natural recreation forests(NRF), and buffer zones for Korea national arboretum(BKNA). As a result of evaluating the quantitative expansion goals of the NPAIS, terrestrial and inland water protected areas exceed 17% of the quantitative goal in Aichi biodiversity Target 11. The larger the area of individual OECMs and the lower the degree of overlap with NPAs, the higher the contribution of them to the terrestrial and inland water protected areas. DRZ contributes to enlarge more than 3% of quantitative expansion. And RZ and NRF contribute more than 1%. The marine protected areas are expanded by $1,425km^2$ through FPZ, but the expanded area is very small as comparing with the total marine area. It adds only 0.321% to the quantitative expansion. The rest of OECMs also has very poor quantitative expansion contributions in the marine area. Consequently, the NPAIS is effective for quantitative expansion of land areas, but not for marine areas.
